Dhawan, Executive Engineer of the corporation, Mr Pat Ram, DSP, and other officials reached the local office, near Urban Estate, in the morning to seal the office as the state government had decided to wind up the department. The police force accompanying the officials returned after noticing that there were no employees to oppose the sealing. When the officials started sealing the office, some women employees arrived and opposed the move. They raised slogans against the state government and local officials. Later, hundreds of employees also reached the spot and raised slogans. The mob manhandled officials and damaged the windscreen of the SDM’s vehicle. They also started throwing stones. The officials pressed into service more police personnel and sealed the office. Later, the agitating employees sat on dharna in front of the office. A heavy police posse was deployed at the spot to avoid any untoward incident. |
The hand that generates steals power Hisar, June 29 According to official sources, the average consumption in the colony came down from 2.7 lakh units per month prior to December 2000 to 1.8 lakh at present. This clearly indicates that earlier powermen themselves were stealing power. The DHBVN was swamped with complaints from the public about the high line losses in its own colonies when it launched the anti-power theft campaign more than a year ago. It then introduced the system of single-point bulk supply in the colony in December 2000 in the colony with 1026 dwellings. The internal management of metering, collection of bills, checking, maintenance etc was entrusted to the Estate Officer of the colony. The operation wing of the nigam remained responsible for power supply and collecting of bills. The line losses came down gradually. Sources said metering of power supplied to each consumption point, including offices, street lights, rest houses, replacement of defective meters, installation of electronic meters, proper maintenance of service cable and supply system and a constant vigil through random checking also paid dividends. Twelve cases of power theft were detected and a penalty of Rs 77,266 was imposed on erring employees. Disciplinary action was also taken against them. However, the sources did not reveal whether criminal cases were registered against them. |
Power losses reduced Chandigarh, June 29 An official spokesman said here today that by bringing down the line losses in Vidyut Nagar, the corporation had saved electricity worth Rs 12.50 lakh during the past 14 months. |

Repair work of nullah delayed Ambala, June 29 Municipal Council officials
apparently believe that this is the most opportune time for starting
work on the repair and widening of Gurguria nullah which flows through
Ambala cantonment. The Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Ambala
Sadar, in a letter addressed to the Executive Engineer, Water Services
Division, Ambala, states “you are requested to start the work
immediately to avoid flood situation in the town.” The letter dated
June 28 states “you were requested to inform this office regarding
progress of work for repair of Gurguria nullah so that the government
be informed accordingly. The amount of Rs 29 lakh received for the
widening of nullah was transferred to your department as per direction
issued by the Chief Minister, Haryana, to the Deputy Commissioner,
Ambala, at a meeting held with the Chief Minister.” The Deputy
Commissioner, Ambala, Mr D.D. Gautam, said discussion on the repair
and widening of the nullah had taken place with the Chief Minister, Mr
Om Prakash Chautala. “We have been asked to technically examine the
project so that there are no hinderances when the execution of the
work starts,” he said. He stated that work on the nullah could not
be started at this juncture. “We plan to carry out the work before
the next monsoon after the technical examination is completed.
Incidentally, the work on diversion drain is completed,” he
said. The MLA, Ambala Cantonment, Mr Anil Vij, said the letter issued
by the Municipal Council officials reflects a lack of appreciation of
ground realities. “Is it feasible to even think of starting the
widening of the nullah when rainfall has already started?” he
queried. “The work should have begun when the money was released in
October last year,” he added. Mr Vij said a sum of Rs 30 lakh had
been sanctioned under the “Sarkar Apke Dwar” programme for
widening of the nullah. “The money was forwarded to the Municipal
Council which subsequently put forth 10 tenders of Rs 3 lakh each,”
he said. Mr Vij said certain financial limitations led the Municipal
Council to undertake the peculiar arrangement of putting up 10 tenders
of equal amount. “This would have ultimately led to the work being
effected as there could have lack of coordination among those who
bagged the tenders,” he said. He said the issue was raised at the
Shivalik Development Board meeting which was presided over by Mr
Chautala. “On the suggestion that this work should be carried out by
an expert agency, Mr Chautala directed that the work should be
undertaken by the drainage department,” he said.
