College fined for wrong admission
Chandigarh, July 3
Panjab University has fined one of its colleges for violating admission guidelines in a case. Sources said the PU had asked the Sector 26 Sri Guru Gobind Singh College to pay a Rs 5,000 fine for admitting a candidate to the MA (Punjabi) course wrongly.

MC advised to utilise sewage plant gases
Chandigarh, July 3
The Union Non-Conventional Energy Resources Department has advised the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh to utilise gases emanating from its sewerage treatment plant for generating power and domestic fuel.


Panchkula gets passport centre

Residents of Panchkula may not require coming to Regional Passport Office at Chandigarh for submitting their applications for passports as it will now be done in the district administration office from today onwards.

Bearing a strange title, Sacred Waters, the show is aimed at inspiring public awe by capturing water bodies in all their grandeur, and also serving a larger purpose. Put together by an upcoming photo artiste Tarun Chopra, Sacred Waters documents the beauty of water as also its indispensable nature. Nurturing a love for photography, Tarun travelled to far off places of the subcontinent, scratching the surface of earth in search of that perfect picture which he often spotted in the lavish water bodies.

Plan to develop Panchkula as tourist spot

Haryana Tourism plans to develop Panchkula as a major tourist destination in the state.
This was disclosed by Mr Bhaskar Chatterjee, Commissioner and Secretary, Tourism, while talking to mediapersons here today. He said that the Tourism Department was making allout efforts in this regard.

Stamp duty reduction welcomed

Various social and political bodies have welcomed the decision of the Chandigarh Administration to reduce stamp duty from 12.50 per cent to 6 per cent.
The president of the local unit of the BJP Mr Yashpal Mahajan, said the Administration had given a bonanza to city residents as this had come as a relief.

Now solar-powered ‘invertors’
Chandigarh, July 3
In this heat it is uncomfortable when the power goes off. The option of invertors and generators is always there and now the Department of Science and Technology is offering its own unit comprising a fan and light run on solar power. The unit costs the user about Rs 4,000 and is available in the city from the local office of the department in Sector 17.

The committee yesterday found ways to increase the penalty for encroachment through a wider interpretation of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act (Extended to Chandigarh).

Speaking at the conference of the Directors of Youth Welfare and Programme Coordinators of the NSS, here today, he said setting up of these units in the colleges will help in taking various health programmes to the grassroot level.

Bus passenger drugged, looted
Chandigarh, July 3
Mr Ram Babu Batti, a resident of R.K. Puram, New Delhi, was allegedly drugged by a fellow passenger in a Chandigarh-bound bus which he boarded in New Delhi.
In his complaint to the police, Batti said that he was given some biscuits which made him unconscious and the passenger got down somewhere in the way with his suitcase containing some clothes, a camera and Rs 250.

Two killed in mishap
Chandigarh, July 3
Two occupants of a Maruti van were killed and five others were injured when it hit a truck on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway near Hallo Majra here early this morning.
As per information available, Gautam and Prem Kishore were transporting newspapers in the Maruti van and somewhere on their way they picked up five passengers. The van rammed into a truck.

An accused arrested by the UT police in a case of trespassing and theft was today sentenced to three-month rigorous imprisonment by a local court. The accused, Vinod Kumar, was sentenced by the UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Mr Ajay Singal.

Taking up a petition filed by a kidney patient and her husband, seeking directions for appropriate treatment, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, comprising Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar and Mr Justice Mr N.K. Sodhi, has issued notice of motion for July 9 to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, the Head of the Kidney Transplant Department and the Medical Superintendent.

DC for campaign against malaria
Panchkula, July 3
Keeping in view the monsoon season, the district administration has directed the Health Department to launch an anti-malaria drive in the slum areas in the town.
Ms Jyoti Arora, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a meeting of the District Standing Malaria Committee, directed the health officials to carry out sprays of insecticides in slums and other places where there was any possibility of breaking out the disease.

Swimming meet concludes
