CM’s tours “wooed Rs 1000 cr investment” Chandigarh, June 27 “One of the most important aspects of the last tour was that we succeeded in projecting Haryana as a preferred investment destination among the south east Asian investors, earlier only the Japanese knew about Haryana because of the Suzuki unit at Gurgaon”, a senior official said. On his return to Chandigarh from his tour of the south east Asian countries, Mr Chautala, who led a team of seven official members and 14 businessmen to these countries, claimed that they had succeeded in inviting an investment of about Rs 1000 crore. While Singaporean and Korean entrepreneurs were impressed upon by the Haryana team about the state’s potential as an industrial hub, specific investments were promised by Japanese companies having their units at Haryana. Japanese company YKK reportedly promised to invest Rs 82 crore in its existing plant at Bawal and convert it into an export base. The Honda Motors would expand their existing investment to Rs 700 crore for manufacturing mobikes at Manesar and the Suzuki Motors would put up a Rs 200 crore diecasting unit at Manesar, Mr Chautala announced on his return. While investors from South Korea and Singapore did not actually come rushing to Haryana since the trip in October, there was a noticeable increase in interest in Haryana among the foreign investors which could be attributed to the last visit, a senior official stated. He said since the last trip more than Rs 100 crore worth of foreign direct investment had been proposed for Haryana by reputed companies from abroad. Barco Electronics Systems Pvt Ltd has proposed an investment of Rs 55 crore, Dz Card India Pvt Ltd has proposed an investment of Rs 4.5 crore (for the first phase), Stanley Electric Co. Ltd has proposed an investment of Rs 20 crore, Bendo Chemical Industries Ltd has proposed Rs 25 crore and Yamaha Motor has proposed Rs Eight crore, the official said. The state government, however, failed to organise the crucial global investors’ meet, which the Chief Minister had said would be organised in Delhi in the first part of 2001, with his visit to south east Asian countries providing a backdrop for investment in Haryana by global entrepreneurs. Apparently, Mr P.K. Chaudhary, who was Commissioner of the Information Technology department in October and was part of the entourage, had mooted the plan of holding an investors’ meeting. After his removal as Commissioner, Education department, nobody took any interest in the idea and it eventually was abandoned. However, state government officials here argued that even though the global investors’ meet could not be organised, there were number of meetings between the Haryana Government and businessmen and diplomats from industrialised nations since the October trip. The officials said as a sequel to the Haryana delegation’s visit to Japan, a large team of small and medium industrialists from Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) visited Haryana sometime back. Besides, ambassadors and high commissioners from industrialised countries such as Japan, Singapore, Belgium, France, Canada and Korea had called on Mr Chautala and expressed interest in investment possibilities in Haryana, the officials claimed. They said that the foreign trips by the Chief Minister and his team were also aimed at building confidence among the investors to open up gradually possibilities for investment. The state government was in touch with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as well as the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) for participation by members of these two organisations in the ensuing tour of five countries by the Chief Minister, the officials said and added that the trip would further promote Haryana among foreign investors. |
Wakf lands being encroached upon Panipat, June 27 At the meeting, presided over by Hazrat Hakeem Haroon, it was alleged that a leader was trying to grab Wakf property worth about Rs 20 crore in Gurgaon which was purchased a few years ago and had a boundary wall. It also had a chowkidar. Even then, certain persons had reportedly constructed some pillars with an intention to encroach upon it. Maulana Atta-Ullah from Himachal said property worth over Rs 50 crore of the Punjab Wakf Board at Shimla was being encroached upon by certain persons and an Imam was trying to protect them. He said as many as six mosques at Shimla had been converted into residences by certain people. They pointed out that except the Punjab and Tamil Nadu Wakf Boards, rest of the 22 Wakf boards in the country had failed to manage the property. The management of the Uttra Pradesh Wakf Board had not taken any step to remove encroachments and supplement its income. That was why board depended on Central assistance for giving salary to its employees, they said. The situation in Bihar was even worse with politicians and officers joining hands to grab Wakf property, they alleged. In a resolution, they appreciated the efforts of the Administrator of the Punjab Wakf Board, Dr M.R. Haque, for supplementing the income of the board and taking action against erring officials and launching of various education schemes for Muslim boys and girls. |
Haryana woos German investors Manesar (Gurgaon), June 27 Mr Richter is here with a team to visit the industrial model township (IMT). Officers who tried to impress on the Ambassador of the virtues of investing in Haryana, especially in the IMT, were the local Deputy Commissioner, Mr A.K. Singh, and the General Manager, Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation, Mr R.N. Malik. The officers highlighted the salient features of the IMT set up on a sprawling 1,800 acre, saying that it was the best industrial estate in South Asia. The attractive features catalogued in the interaction with the ambassadorial team included a residential complex for employees of the firms within the premises, a golf course, a helipad, provision for round the clock supply of water and power and hassle-free clearances to set up projects within a upper limit of seven-days time frame. The Ambassador wanted to know about the status of power supply and water in the IMT. He also asked about the availability of man power, both skilled and unskilled, and the facility for export marketing. Mr Richter said foreign investors would feel more encouraged to do business in India if they were convinced of the permancy and peace of the ongoing economic reforms. He said the investors would look at the cost advantage. Talking to newspersons, he said the investors had several choices. They would invest in any country only after studying the cost advantage. According to him, his country’s investment in China was ten times more than India. He said investors in Germany took notice of India, especially when it broke ahead in the information technology sector. People of Germany had realised that there was more to India than its richness in heritage and culture. |

Freedom fighter in quest of honour, pension Panipat Besides serving nine months’ imprisonment at the age of 22 years, a freedom fighter now around 81, Niranjan Dass Sharma commonly known as “ND” has run from pillar to post to receive “Sammaan” as a freedom fighter, which is his right; but till date the Government of Haryana and the Central Government have not recognised as a freedom fighter. In the absence of a regular source of income or pension and other benefits due to a freedom fighter, the 81-year-(old) young man has been finding it difficult to meet his daily requirements is still hopeful of getting this “Samman” from the Haryana Swatantrata Sainani Samiti stationed at Chandigarh as a “Swatantrata Sainani,” before he dies. On a visit to his single room residence which is press room, he being editor of “Diplomat International,” alleged that he had no grudge against the present politicians as he did his duty selflessly at that time, but he felt sorry over the Government’s attitude particularly of the Haryana Government for not verifying the authenticity of his letters received from Swiss Embassy which confirm that “N.D. Sharma, an Indian National is registered at page number 27 as Niranjan Dass Sharma son of Chetan Nath Sharma who was jailed on August 13, 1942 and was released on May 12, 1943 in compliance with order under Section number 39 of the Defence of India Rules.” He also wrote to the Prime Minister three times but without any tangible result. The Deputy Commissioner Panipat has also written to the Freedom Fighters Samiti and to the Chief Secretary Haryana but without any result. The Niranjan Dass is very sad as whenever any officer from the Haryana Swatantrata Sainani Samiti came to verify the fact, he gave all details, but in return the officer would simply ask for verification from some local MLA or M.P., which ND refused, resulting in failure to get an honour from the Government. What to talk of “Sammaan”, even old age pension of Rs 100 per month for which he submitted a letter and copy of the affidavits dated July 24, 1994 to the District Social Welfare Board when he was aged 75, has not been sanctioned to him till date, he alleged. The Citizen Council of Panipat in its letter to the Chief Minister demanded that an honour be given to the freedom fighter Niranjan Dass Sharma which was his right, with all benefits and to direct the Social Welfare Board to grant old age pension from July 1994; when he submitted his papers for the same. |

A doctor, highly regarded by the patients, said that they sometimes faced a piquant situation. “There are times when we have make arrangements for medicines in an emergency or for a poor person. We give them samples as they may not be in a position to buy the medicine. However, we have to face allegation of favouritism from people who are definitely in a position to buy the medicine”, he said.
Government doctors, who have been colleagues of both arrested doctors, opined that although they were aware of the malpractices, it was not “advisable” for them to initiate action in this regard. “We are aware of a number of aspects but if we begin informing regarding irregularities then the doctor’s fraternity will turn against us, virtually sidelining us,” a government doctor said.
