Chautala’s assurance to people on amenities

The Haryana BJP president and Ambala MP, Mr Rattan Lal Kataria, sought a ban on potato chips manufactured by multinational companies since he felt that they were over-priced. “We are soon going to have potato atta which will have 40 per cent protein,” he said.

Krishak Samaj’s charge against sugar mills

The Haryana Krishak Samaj has alleged that sugar mills in the state have not given Rs 70 crore (approximately) as dues to sugarcane growers in the state. Mr Sat Pal Kaushik, state general secretary of the Haryana Krishak Samaj and member of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, in a press note issued here yesterday, said because of non-payment, the farmers were suffering from financial crisis.

Chautala’s assurance to people on amenities

Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala today dedicated to the people of the state, a primary health centre (PHC) at Dariyawala village and a krishi vigyan kendra (KVK) of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University at Pandu Pindara village. With the inauguration of these two centres, a long-standing demand of the people of the area has been fulfilled.

The PHC has been built at a cost of Rs 28.33 lakh on an area of over 31 kanals. The land for the centre has been provided free of cost by the village panchayat. Besides catering to the health requirements of the people of the area, this well-equipped PHC will also supervise the functioning of sub-health centres at Jajwan, Barsola, Julani, Ikas and Barakalan.

The KVK built at a cost of Rs 23 lakh on an area of almost 50 acres has been provided free of cost by the village panchayat. The funds for the construction of the building have been provided by the Indian Council for Agriculture Research. The KVK will impart training and consultation to the farmers and rural youth in animal husbandry and home science.

Addressing the gatherings on these occasions, the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, assured that his government was committed towards providing all basic amenities to the people of the state. Especially referring to the requirements of water for drinking and irrigation purposes, he said all steps were being taken to provide as much as 70 lpcd of drinking water to the people and a survey was being conducted for ensuring sufficient supply of irrigation water till the tail ends. If need be, new pipelines, water works and boosting stations would be also be set up.

He congratulated the farmers for their hard work which had resulted in bumper crops of both wheat and paddy. At the same time, he emphasised upon the need to diversify from traditional crops of wheat and paddy to more economically viable food crops. He especially suggested adoption of horticulture crops such as fruits, vegetables and floriculture and fish farming, dairy farming etc. He urged the people to make use of organic manure instead of chemical fertilisers since this resulted in healthier food production and would also help in fetching good prices for their produce.

The Chief Minister also advised the villagers to maintain cleanliness in their villages so as to lead healthy lives and prevent spread of infection. He said that most of their demands which had been presented to him during the sarkar apke dwar programmes had been fulfilled and those relating to village development and maintaining of healthy and clean environment in the villages were being given top priority.

Regarding the issue of WTO, he assured that the interests of the farmers were safe in the hands of present government both at the state and Central levels. It would be ensured that heavy duties would be levied on the import of agricultural and dairy products so that the indigenous products were not affected adversely, he added.

Acceding to the demands of the local people, Mr Chautala assured that a Veterinary Hospital would soon be set up in the area, all the village phirnies would be concretised and the minors would be repaired by the government.

The Chief Minister also presided over the meeting of the District Grievances Committee at Jind and redressed most of the complaints on the spot.

Later, in an informal chat with a section of the press, the Chief Minister said Indian National Lok Dal had nothing to do with the induction of Mr Ajit Singh in the Union Cabinet and this matter was at the discretion of the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Replying to another query, the Chief Minister said that new meters for tubewell connections were being installed for assessing the consumption of electricity and to prevent line loss. He informed that with the installation of these meters the line loss had been reduced from 40 per cent to 16 per cent. However, farmers would be issued electricity bills on flat rates, he added.

Resentment prevails among a section of people of the town over the alleged exchange of valuable land belonging to the local Jayanti Devi Temple with less valuable land belonging to private parties. Prominent persons at a meeting here last night condemned the exchange of temple land and demanded cancellation of the exchange deed.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Jai Parkash, Congress MLA, said the temple was the property of the Haryana Government and the land had been given to the temple by the former rural of the erst while Jind State. Legally the temple land could not be sold or transferred to any other party.

He alleged that the temple land was exchanged to favour certain politicians and demanded that it be returned to the temple. If the exchange deed was not cancelled, residents of the town would start an agitation, he warned.

Mr Mange Ram Gupta, Congress MLA from Jind, said residents should oppose the land exchange. All political parties should jointly oppose the move and legal proceedings should be started in this matter.

It may be recalled that 23 kanals of the temple land was exchanged with 31 kanals of land belonging to private parties. However, the temple priest, who is party in the exchange deed, justified the move. He said the land was exchanged in the interest of the temple. Now the temple had got more land adjoining the temple, he added.

Bansi lambasts Chautala

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal said if voted to power he would revive the municipal committee of Kanina Mandi and set up a college there.

He was addressing a public meeting at Kanina in Mahendragarh district today. He refuted the charge levelled against him that he had not paid attention towards Ahirwal.

He lashed out at Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala for interfering in Uttar Pradesh affairs and organising rallies against Mr Ajit Singh. He said those who had defected from the party would not be given ticket.

Mr Bansi Lal said during his tenure he elevated six ministers from Ahirwal only.

He alleged that there was jungle raj in Haryana and law and order situation had deteriorated.

He said Mr Chautala should see that the SYL Canal’s construction was completed.

Dahiya Visiting Prof at Paris varsity

The French Government has awarded a visiting professorship at the University of Paris to Dr Sri Bhagwan Dahiya, internationally distinguished Professor of Economics at Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak.

Dr Dahiya has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Rome. Both universities are among the oldest ones in the world.

Dr Dahiya has already been a Visiting Professor at the University of Tuscia at Viterbo in Italy, a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex in the UK, and at Free University, Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Dr Dahiya was invited by the Caribit Foundation to deliver the Schumpeter Lecture in Italy in May, 1999. The foundation invites internationally distinguished scholars to deliver this lecture every year.

Dr Dahiya is also the Chief Editor of the International Journal of Development Planning Literature, International Journal of Accounting Literature, International Quarterly Journal of Finance, International Journal of Management Literature and International Quarterly Journal of Marketing.

He has also been on the Advisory Committee of the Ethiopian Economic Journal and a referee for the selection of Professor at Pittsburgh University in the USA.

Dr Dahiya has the honour of being a discussant at the World Economic Congress and has been awarded several national and international Research Fellowships through the UGC by the Government of India, the British Government and the French Government.

Dr Dahiya, who is at present Dean of the Faculties of Social Sciences and Education at Maharshi Dayanand University, will be going to Paris in October next.

Girls top merit list again

Girls outshone boys in the BA, B.Sc and B.Com examinations of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), the results of which were declared today.

Girls dominated the merit list. While Preeti Sangwan of BPSM College, Khanpur Kalan, topped in BA (part III) by securing 948 marks out of 1200, Rashmi of Aggarwal College, Ballabgarh, and Pooja of Hindu College, Sonepat, stood first in the B.Sc and B.Com examinations respectively.

Girls have captured all 15 positions (except position No. 10) in the merit list of BA (part-III). Ravinder Singh of Satjinda Kalyana College, Kalanaur, got the 10th position.

In the B.Sc (part-III) merit list Vinod Kumar of Aggarwal College, Ballabhgarh, and Vinod Kumar of K.L.P. College, Rewari got the fifth and eighth positions respectively.

Barring Prashant of University College, Rohtak (8th), and Sachin Garg of JVMGRR College, Charki Dadri (9th), girls feature on the merit list of B.Com (part-III).

Colleges in Rohtak, Bhiwani, Rewari, Sonepat, Mahindergarh, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Jhajjar districts are affiliated to MDU which has declared the results in a record time.

The controller examination, Dr K.C. Bhardwaj, said the merit list of the entrance examination for LLB held on June 3 had also been announced today.

However, the pass percentage in BA (part-III) has registered a sharp decline. As against a pass percentage of 77.99 in 1999-2000, it is only 62.99 per cent this year. The pass percentage of B.Sc (part-III) has also declined.

Protest against vulgar ad on Siti cable

The local Siti cable has been earning money by showing vulgar advertisements, evoking sharp criticism from residents, particularly women and young girls.

On condition of anonymity, three housewives today alleged that the Siti cable had shown partially-clad in an abortion film recorded at a local hospital. They have decided to lodge a protest with the owner of the cable and also complain to the Deputy Commissioner and the SP.

On of the housewives said it had embarrassed her and her daughter as the film had been shown for the past four-five days.

She also pointed out that during vacation young children were home and spent time viewing television.

Another woman said she had asked her children not to see Siti cable if such “advertisements” were flashed.

The owner of the cable, Mr M.P. Aggarwal, admitted that the advertisement had been telecast but without his knowledge. He had no answer when asked cable operators might shoot and show a blue film without his knowledge.

He said as soon as he received a complaint, he stopped showing the advertisement.

The film was prepared by the camera team of Siti cable at a local hospital.

2 held for keeping obscene movies

The police yesterday arrested two persons for keeping pornographic video films in their video parlour.

A case under the IPC has been registered against the two.

The SP, Mr Hanif Qureshi, told mediapersons here that the district police had launched a campaign against the video parlours keeping obscene films.

The police raided the shops of Sandeep Singh and Sanjeev Kumar at Jakhal town in the district at a time when they were allegedly watching pornographic films on their videos.

The police also seized the video films, the television and the video cassette players.

Enforce labour laws, demands CITU

The district committee of the Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU) has decided to hold a rally and demonstration on June 26 in protest against the state government’s failure to increase the minimum wages of industrial workers and enforce the labour laws and the Factories Act.

Mr S.N. Solanki, president, Haryana Committee of the CITU said here today that a memorandum listing the demands of the union would be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner after the rally.

He refuted the claims of the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, that the minimum wages fixed by his government were the highest and that the workers were satisfied with the wages. He said the Haryana Government had fixed the minimum wages at Rs 1,999 per month which was far less than the wages fixed by Punjab and Delhi.

16 kg of charas seized

The Jind police arrested two smugglers recovered 16 kg of charas from their possession yesterday.

Stating this here, Mr O.P. Singh, Superintendent of Police, said on seeing the police party at the local Bhiwani road, the two motorcycle-borne youths fled towards the local Rohtak road bypass. The party, headed by Mr Mata Ravi Kiran, A.S.P. Jind, chased the motorcyclists and nabbed them near the local Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

The S.P. said the arrested youths had been identified as Randhir of village Nandgarh and Wazir Singh of village Rithal. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act.

Encroachments removed in Sonepat

The district administration today claimed to have succeeded in vacating at least 10 acres of public land worth about Rs 10 crore from industrialists and squatters in industrial area of the city during a three-day anti-encroachment campaign launched by it on the directive of the state government.

According to official sources, owners of several industries had grabbed the land of the Industries Department about 50 years ago and illegally constructed structures and buildings. Some of them also encroached upon the roads by constructing walls which had been causing inconvenience to vehicular traffic. Informed sources revealed that the owners of at least 40 industries were involved in the grabbing of public land.

Meanwhile, the Sonepat Municipal Council had got vacated as many as 24 shops built on the Industries Department land.

Representatives of various political parties, social and religious organisations today urged the state government to take action against the officials found guilty of negligence when the public land was being grabbed.

DC orders drive against encroachments

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr M.R. Presiding over a meeting of the district officers here today, the Mr Anand pointed out that several shopkeepers and owners of business establishments had encroached upon the roads in front of their business premises and were causing great inconvenience to people.

He also asked the shopkeepers to voluntarily remove the encroachments.

At the meeting, the DC instructed the Executive Engineer, Public health Department, to display information boards carrying information about the water supply timings in particular areas and also the names of officers concerned for the redressal of consumers grievances at all water supply offices. The water supply timings must be adhered to and in case of any disruption the local people should be informed and alternate water supply through tankers be provided, Mr Anand added.

‘Protein rich potato atta soon’

The Haryana BJP president and Ambala MP, Mr Rattan Lal Kataria, sought a ban on potato chips manufactured by multinational companies since he felt that they were over-priced. “We are soon going to have potato atta which will have 40 per cent protein,” he said.

Talking to mediapersons here today after attending the two-day meeting of the agriculture consultative committee at Shimla, Mr Kataria said the issue of agriculture science experts is going to be raised in the Parliament. “For construction there are engineers and for patients there are doctors, in the same manner, agriculture science experts must be encouraged for the vast farming sector,” he added.

Mr Kataria said that agriculture consultative committee meeting was held to look into the impact of the WTO on the agriculture sector. He said that the committee members also paid a visit to the Potato Research Centre where the working system was studied.

He said that there were three factors when the WTO arrived. The factors are how to reach to other markets in different nations, how to lend support to the local products and how to reduce subsidy.

He pointed out that the minimum support price is popular in Punjab and Haryana and now farmers from other states are also demanding similar MSP. “We need to strengthen our bio-technique.

The agriculture policy is laying stress on doubling the growth rate. For instance, a farmer having a three acre holding, we want that the farmer should not only be able to fulfil his household needs, he should also be able to create assets and payoff debts,” he stated.

The Haryana Krishak Samaj has alleged that sugar mills in the state have not given Rs 70 crore (approximately) as dues to sugarcane growers in the state.

Mr Sat Pal Kaushik, state general secretary of the Haryana Krishak Samaj and member of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, in a press note issued here yesterday, said because of non-payment, the farmers were suffering from financial crisis.

He alleged that on the other hand, cooperative banks of the state had geared up the recovery of loan to the farmers. He said before the crushing season, the state government had promised that the payment of sugarcane would be given within 14 days.

Mr Kaushik demanded that the government should direct all sugar mills in the state to release the payment immediately.

He further said the Haryana Youth Congress would gherao the State Assembly on June 12 to protest against the functioning and anti-policies of the Centre and the state government.

MDU B.Ed entrance test today

Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) will conduct the B.Ed (regular) course entrance test tomorrow.

According to Controller of Examination, K.C. Bhardwaj, all arrangements had been made.

About 32,000 candidates will take the test which will be held in two shifts at 75 centres in Rohtak and Sonepat districts.

Haryana to hike fish production

The Haryana Government today claimed that it would bring 8,400 hectares of water area under fish cultivation and fixed a target of 35,500 tonnes of fish production in the state during the year 2001-2002.

The Minister of State for Fisheries, Mr Mohammad Ilyas, said in Haryana more than 7,745 hectares of water area was under fish culture during 2000-2001. The fish production was more than 33,040 tonnes per year from all sources, whereas only 58 hectares water area was under fish culture at the time of formation of the state in November 1966 with fish production of only 600 tonnes.

The Minister said the Aquaculture Research and Training Institute had been set up at Hisar to give a boost to fish production.

Notorious cheat likely to be arrested: SSP

Naveen Jain, who cheated several city residents of crores of rupees and disappeared nearly six months ago, is likely to be arrested soon.

The SSP, Mr A.S. Ahlawat, said the Patna police had arrested Pankaj Jain, a son of Naveen Jain, on June 7 and got several clues regarding his father’s whereabouts.

Mr Ahlawat said Naveen Jain was staying at some place near the Indo-Nepal border. He said a police party led by Inspector Ram Prakash had been sent to Patna to bring Pankaj Jain to Rohtak.

Naveen Jain, a ‘biri’ trader, duped people of crores of rupees promising them interest at a rate of two per cent per month.

Sampat’s nephew killed in mishap

Fatehabad, June 9
Satpal, a nephew of Haryana Finance Minister Sampat Singh was killed last evening when the Maruti car which he was driving hit a heap of bricks.

According to reports, the victim, a resident of Ramsaran village was driving the vehicle when his car hit against a stack of bricks. He, along with the vehicle, was reportedly trapped beneath the heap of bricks. Villagers extricated him from under the heap and took him to the local General Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

In another road accident last evening, a Tata Sumo hit a tree near Ayalki village on the local Rattia road. All six occupants of the vehicle were injured. The condition of two of them is stated to be serious.

One of the injured persons, Mr Harjinder Singh, said he, along with his family members, had come from Bhawanigarh, Punjab, and was going to visit his in-laws at Rattia when the vehicle met with the accident.

Revoke suspension, demands union

The Dakshin Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Employees Union has resented the suspension its of two members allegedly due to political interference.

The power nigam workers organised a gate meeting here yesterday and threatened that in case the suspension orders were not revoked by June 10, they would launch an agitation.

The meeting was organised at the sub urban office of the DHVPN here. A senior union activist, Mr Rajesh Mahiya, presided over the meeting. The union leaders alleged that the two workers were sent to Manawali village for a routine checking of power thefts. When they detected an irregularity at a place, they reported the matter to their senior officers. The junior engineer checked the meters and imposed a fine on the erring consumers. But the nigam officers suspended the workers who detected the pilferage instead of rewarding them. They alleged that this had been done under political pressure.

In an FIR lodged with the police Ram Kumar said he along with his relative Rohtas were asleep when they heard an explosion at around 1.30 a.m. They saw two persons running towards fields. Within a few seconds, the second bomb blasted and they were injured.

The police visited the site and found the pieces of two countrymade bomb. A live bomb was also found.

A case under Sections 307 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosives Act has been registered. Help of experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory, Madhuban has also been sought.

In a separate incident the police today recovered two vehicles, which were stolen from the town last night.

The SSP, Mr Attar Singh, said a Maruti car and a Tata Sumo were stolen from Kamla Nagar and Shivaji colony localities, respectively, last night. While the car was recovered from Kalanaur the Tata Sumo was recovered from the town.
