CM to meet district police chiefs

Rising crime against women and increase in suicide and robberies will be discussed at a meeting of district police chiefs summoned by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh on June 11.

BJP panel for urban voters

The president of the state BJP, Mr Brij Lal Rinwa, has constituted a committee of its office-bearers and members to suggest concessions that can be doled out to the urban voters. In view of the forthcoming Assembly elections, proposals, such as reduction in rates of domestic electricity, water and sewerage facilities, rationalisation of octroi and incentives for the small-scale industry can be mooted for urban people.

Pak abetting drug addiction: Chawla
Bathinda, June 9
After failing to incite terrorism in Punjab the ISI of Pakistan has now started converting the youths to drug addicts, to increase instability in the state, said Dr Baldev Raj Chawla, Minister for Health and family Welfare, Punjab.

Union leader’s health deteriorating
Indefinite fast enters 9th day

The health of Mr Beant Singh Kainth, president of the Sugar Mill Chalao Action Committee, who has been observing an indefinite fast since June 1, has started deteriorating. The local health authorities who have been monitoring his condition since June 6, have started contemplating his hospitalisation.

Cops in state of hibernation: MLA

Dr Mohinder Kumar Rinwa, former MLA and secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, in a statement here today expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the Fazilka area.

Despite the district administration having banned the sale of cut fruits in the city, sale of watermelon, papaya, cucumber, tomato, ‘chat’ and sugarcane juice in the open without regard to the risk to the health of people has been going on.

Don’t ignore English: Dhindsa
Sangrur, June 9
Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertiliser and Secretary-General of the Shiromani Akali Dal today stressed on upon the need of cordial relations between India and Pakistan to strengthen Punjabiat. He said Punjabiat had suffered in both countries whenever a war took place between India and Pakistan in the past.

Land for Army institute selected
Chandigarh, June 9
The Army authorities have identified land near Anandpur Sahib to set up an in-service training institute for the junior-level officers. Informed official sources said that as part of the first phase of the project, about 500 acre had been identified near the Dasmesh Academy, at a short distance from Anandpur Sahib. Besides, the Institute, there is also a proposal to set up an “Army location” in the area, it is learnt.

SGPC drops resolution on Sikh clergy
Amritsar, June 9
Following strong opposition by members of the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal, the SGPC executive which met under the presidentship of Mr Jagdev Singh Talwandi yesterday dropped the resolution which suggested that any religious issue should be first referred to the Sikh Advisory Board and then the Dharma Parchar Committee and the SGPC Executive before being taken up by the Sikh Clergy.

Probe ordered into ‘purchase scam’

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee today ordered probe into the alleged purchase scam by the management of Takht Kesgarh Sahib. The inquiry has been ordered on the direction of its chief, Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi.

The Fortis Heart institute will soon be opened in SAS Nagar. This was stated at a seminar on “Advances in cardiac care”, organised by the institute here today to discuss advances in the world of cardiac care. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Harinder Singh Bedi of the institute said that experts working in the institute have tried to introduce new techniques that are employed abroad.

Urging the Badal government to waive the loans advanced to small and marginal farmers, the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Capt Amarinder Singh, said today that the indifferent attitude of the Badal government towards farmers, distressed by indebtedness, was driving them to suicide.
