Windies collapse against McGrath BRISBANE, Nov 23 (AFP) — Glenn McGrath ripped through the brittle West Indies batting to condemn the Caribbean tourists to their fifth sub-hundred total in two years in an ominous start to the five-Test series at the Gabba here today. The feisty strike bowler snared six for 17 as Australia routed the West Indies for 82 and had sauntered to 107 for one in reply by the close of the opening day’s play. Pre-match predictions of an abbreviated three-or-four-day Test look on the mark. The tourists’ anxieties were realised when their batting succumbed in 49.1 overs to leave them with a mountain to climb just to salvage the Test, let alone win it. McGrath seized the initiative for Steve Waugh’s unofficial world champions removing Brian Lara on the way to leapfrogging Craig McDermott to become the third all-time highest Australian wicket-taker with 294. Acclaimed as the best fast bowler in contemporary cricket, 30-year-old McGrath has the impressive average per wicket of 22.02 in his 63rd Test, superior to Australia’s top wicket-takers, Shane Warne (366 wickets at 25.97) and Dennis Lillee (355/23.92). McGrath snared Lara’s prized wicket with his first delivery making it 11 times in their 14 Test encounters. Lara, with so much dependent on him, lasted just four deliveries when he failed to move his feet and edged to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist. McGrath was on two hat-tricks during the course of his demolition job, but was denied both times by an element of good fortune for the nonplussed West Indian batsmen. His impressive figures were 20-12-17-6. At stumps, Australia, bidding to equal the West Indies’ 16-year record of 11 consecutive Test wins, had coasted to a 25-run lead with Michael Slater not out 54 and nightwatchman Andy Bichel on four. Openers, Slater and Matthew Hayden wiped out the deficit off 29.1 overs with 11 overs remaining in the day. Hayden was run out for 44 going for a second run by Ramnaresh Sarwan. The latest capitulation continued a dire period for the West Indian cricket. The one-time Calypso Kings were skittled for 54 and 61 against England earlier this year and last year were rolled for 51 by Australia in Trinidad and 97 against New Zealand in Hamilton. The West Indies have lost 13 of their last 15 overseas Tests. In what’s becoming a regular occurrence with the West Indies team, the senior players again failed to deliver the leadership for the younger ones. Vice-captain and opener Sherwin Campbell lasted an hour for 10, Lara occupied the crease for four balls, Shivnarine Chanderpaul was there for an hour for 18 and captain Jimmy Adams remained unbeaten on 16 in 76 minutes. Only 21-year-old Trinidad opener Darren Ganga showed the requisite application, putting his head down for his 20 in 143 minutes before his dismissal at 59 for four triggered a collapse. likes CHANDIGARH, Nov 23 — Going by India’s fine seven-wicket win against Zimbabwe in the first Test of the two-match series at the Ferozeshah Kotla yesterday, it is apparent that the new Indian cricket coach, John Wright, is slowly getting into his groove. Now everybody might take credit for Saurav Ganguly’s ‘‘bold’’ declaration of India’s first innings with only a 36-run lead but some of the credit must be given to Wright, who had taken over the job of cricket coach from this match. Anshuman Gaekwad was the coach of the Indian squad which got the better of Bangladesh in the Dhaka Test earlier this month. There is new spring in the walk of the team members. Nobody lazes in the dressing room when India bat and all players are expected to cheer their team-mates when they are in the middle. Youngster Shiv Sunder Das, playing in only his second Test, was given a thunderous cheer by his team-mates when he reached his first Test 50. It was Wright who rightly assessed that Yuvraj Singh was wasting his time by just carrying water etc for the senior members of the Indian team and it was he who told members of the national selection committee that Yuvraj should be relieved from the national squad and be asked to assist Punjab in their crucial Ranji Trophy tie against Delhi which got under way in Delhi today. It is expected that Yuvraj’s replacement in the Indian team, Mohammad Kaif of Uttar Pradesh, will also be released as and when Uttar Pradesh have to play a Ranji Trophy tie. The cancellation of the Indian team’s tour of Pakistan has probably come as a godsend for the new cricket coach. With a number of Duleep Trophy matches scheduled to be held in December/January, John Wright would get an opportunity to closely observe some players on the fringe of national selection as also those currently playing in the national squad. That there are certain lacunae in the Indian squad is there for all to see and yesterday, the fifth day of the Delhi Test, he invited Harbhajan Singh of Punjab as also Delhi’s Nikhil Chopra and Asish Nehra to bowl at the nets. Interestingly, these three bowlers also bowled to Wright. This is indeed a welcome step. It is learnt that Wright during the course of the Delhi Test has circulated a proforma among all members of the Indian squad where the players have been asked all sorts of questions, ranging from their favourite food to music to daily schedules. The players have also been asked to indicate the injuries they have suffered during their playing days. The reason for doing so is that when Wright punches in the inputs into his computer and finalises the work schedule of the players he will avoid those exercises which might aggravate any old injury of any player. However, if a player indicates that he is fully fit and carries no niggling injuries he will have to undergo the full regime of exercises. Till now, according to sources, only Sachin Tendulkar, has filled the form and returned it to the cricket coach. The cricket coach is also not willing to play favourites among the mediapersons covering cricket. In a note circulated at Delhi, Wright has said that he would be available to answer all questions the day before each match as also at the completion of the match. In Delhi he followed this scheduled and the message is that mediapersons should not disturb him in the course of the match so that he can give undivided attention to the tasks on hand. |
I will not recommend action: Madhavan NEW DELHI, Nov 23 (PTI) — Cricket board’s anti-corrpution commissioner K. Madhavan today said he would not be recommending any punishment if any of the cricket players are found guilty. “I will not recommend any punishment and allow the BCCI to decide the appropriate action against guilty (if found),” Mr Madhavan told PTI here. The anti-corrpution commissioner, who would be submitting his report about the conduct of five cricket players — Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar, Nayan Mongia and Ajay Sharma — and former team physiotherapist Ali Irani to BCCI president A.C. Muthaiah on Saturday, said “any action after this has to be decided by the cricket board.” The CBI had named these players for allegedly being involved in betting and match-fixing in cricket. However, within hours after making the report public on November 1, the BCCI president asked Mr Madhavan to go further into the report and submit his own observation against the players. Justifying setting up of a separate enquiry, Mr Madhavan said “even after the CBI names any government employee for allegedly abusing the official position, a departmental enquiry is initiated against the official to verify the charges levelled.” About the observations made by the CBI against the BCCI, Mr Madhavan said he was still awaiting comments from the board and a supplementary report to this effect would be submitted on November 27. “I have been told the delay is due to necessity of BCCI members having to consult each other in submitting the replies and their frequent tours in connection with their own commercial and industrial activities,” Mr Madhavan said, adding “as the extension of time sought by BCCI is only two days, I have acceded to their request.” As regards CBI findings against players and others in respect of betting and match-fixing, Mr Madhavan said he did not consider it necessary to summon any more persons. “After considering the CBI report and the statements made before me by the players and others, I do not consider it necessary to summon and examine any other person,” Mr Madhavan said. After annoucement of the BCCI inquiry, Mr Madhavan was able to question Manoj Prabhakar, Nayan Mongia, Ajay Jadeja and Ali Irani at Chennai. Examination of Azhar and Sharma was delayed as the two were not initially available for questioning. However, after hiccups, Mr Madhavan managed to question both of them last week. All the six have been named by the CBI in its 162-page report on betting and match fixing which was submitted to the government on October 30. Mr Madhavan also questioned BCCI treasurer Kishore Rungta and Ferozeshah Kotla’s groundsman Ram

Madhavan to suggest punishment: Muthiah DUBAI, Nov 23 (PTI) — Cricket board President A.C. Muthiah has said BCCI internal inquiry into match-fixing allegations by former CBI Joint Director K. Madhavan is likely to suggest punishment to the guilty players though Madhavan himself has said it is for the board to decide on the punishments. “The (Madhavan) report is likely to suggest the penalties for the guilty which could range from life ban to erasing the records of the guilty from the books,” Muthiah, who is in Sharjah to attend the Asian Cricket Council meeting, told The Khaleej Times. However, Madhavan today told PTI in New Delhi that he would not recommend any punishment even if he found any of the players to be guilty. Muthiah also felt that the inquiry by Madhavan would not reveal anything new. “BCCI report will not drastically differ from the CBI report in nature and content. The exercise is being done because it is obligatory for a department to follow up on the CBI findings,” The Khaleej Times quoted Muthiah as saying. Madhavan also justified the separate inquiry by the BCCI. “Even when a government employee is named by the CBI for allegedly abusing an official position, a departmental inquiry is initiated against the official to verify the charges
levelled, he said. |
‘No second look’ on
tour to Pakistan
NEW DELHI, Nov 23 (PTI) — Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Uma Bharti today said there was no question of reconsidering the decision to call off the Indian cricket team’s tour of Pakistan. She replied in the negative when asked by “Star News” whether government was thinking of reconsidering the decision. “The earlier decision of mine was based on the report of the External Affairs Ministry,” she added. |

NEW DELHI, Nov 23 (PTI) — Former captain of the Indian cricket team Mohammad Azharuddin has denied that he ever indulged in match-fixing or had any links with the underworld. Rediff.com website quoted him as having said in an interview, “Sab galat baaten hai yeh. Kuchh nahin kiya maine aisa” (This is all wrong. I have done nothing of this kind). I do not have any links with underworld.” In an apparent reference to the charge that he had been seen in photographs with members of the underworld, Azhar wondered “how do I know who I click a picture with every time” and added “Allah badnami deta hai aur wah hi bachata hai. Tum dekhna (God wills that you are defamed and then he alone saves your reputation. You wait and see). Asked if he had made the admission about fixing of matches in interrogation by the CBI, Azhar cryptically said, “they asked and they answered.” Azhar, however, had no reply when asked if he had ever met M.K. Gupta, the alleged bookie whom he reportedly introduced to the disgraced South African skipper Hansie Cronje, according to a press release from the website. To another question if his lockers were found empty during the CBI operation, he said: “You have answered the question yourself.” Asked why he does not issue a statement to send a message to his fans and well-wishers, Azhar said: “I have said I will talk at an appropriate time. Not right now. I have nothing to say.” On alleged association with Mukesh Gupta, Azhar said “the income tax people were inquiring about some farm house on the outskirts of the city. I want to know too where I have a farm house. “Jo dil me aa raha hain bol rahe hain (they say whatever they want to).” On the criticism that as captain of the team he was said to be aloof, Azhar said: “I always stayed away because I thought the boys would feel uneasy having me around. They are young and want to have fun. Why should I spoil their fun?” Asked how he had been spending his time during self-imposed seclusion in the wake of the match-fixing scandal, Azhar said, “Kya to bhi likhte baitha hun. Jo dil mein aata hain, likhta hun. (I keep on writing, something or the other, whatever comes to my mind). His wife Sangeeta Bijlani paints for a good part of the day. To a reported suggestion by some of his friends that Sangeeta had been the cause of all that had been going wrong in his life, Azhar smiled glancing at Sangeeta and said: “Wonder what would have happened if I had not broken all ties with them (friends). I would have been in deeper trouble.” |
Real Madrid demolish Leeds United LONDON, Nov 23 (Reuters) — European champions Real Madrid began the second phase of the Champions League with a commanding 2-0 demolition of Leeds United on a night when Spartak Moscow, Bayern Munich and Anderlecht also won. Spartak were the biggest winners yesterday, thumping Arsenal 4-1 in Moscow at the start of what proved to be a miserable night for the English premier league. Goals from Brazilians Marcao (29 and 51) and Robson (82) and Yegor Titov (77) gave Spartak victory in their group C match after Arsenal’s Brazilian midfielder Silvinho had given them a second minute lead. Arsenal have now lost three and drawn one of their last four cup and league matches having scored just once. Real made it two defeats out of two for the premier league when they gave David O’Leary’s young Leeds team a lesson in passing and movement at Elland Road as they easily won their group D match 2-0. Fernando Hierro opened the scoring after 66 minutes with a header with Raul adding the second two minutes later. Leeds, who began the first phase of the tournament with a 0-4 defeat at Barcelona, have now won only one of their last 10 matches. The other two matches both ended in 1-0 wins for the home sides with Bayern beating Olympique Lyon 1-0 in group C with a 55th minute header from Jens Jeremies. Anderlecht left it late to beat Lazio 1-0 in Brussels in group D, an 85th minute strike from Canadian Tomasz Radzinski giving them a deserved success against a Lazio side seemingly out for a draw. Bayern had lost their last two Bundesliga games but took the points when Jeremies’ header was deflected off Lyon defender Patrick Mueller, leaving goalkeeper Gregory Coupet stranded. The 1999 European Cup finalists woke up after taking the lead but were denied a second goal by a string of brilliant Coupet saves. Lyon came close to equalising in the 72nd minute with a thunderous volley from defender Jeremie Brechet which Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn punched away. Lazio’s miserable night was completed when their gifted Yugoslav midfielder Dejan Stankovic was sent off in the last minute as they went down 0-1 to Anderlecht. Stankovic (22) who joined Lazio for £ 8.0 million ($ 11.31 million) from Red Star Belgrade two years ago and is tipped by current Lazio coach Sven Goran Eriksson to become one of the best players in the world, showed anything but world class form in the last minute. Slovak referee Lubos Michel, who had already shown seven yellow cards, finally produced a red for Stankovic for stamping on Anderlecht’s Belgian international midfielder Bart Goor. The night’s results left Spartak top of group C on goal difference from Bayern with Lyon and Arsenal on third and fourth. Real Madrid topped group D on goal difference from Anderlecht with Lazio and Leeds following behind. The second phase of the competition began on Tuesday. In group A Valencia beat Sturm Graz 2-0 and Manchester United beat Panathinaikos 3-1. In group B Deportivo Coruna beat Paris St Germain 3-1 and AC Milan and Galatasaray drew 2-2 in an ill-tempered game in Milan. English bookmaker William Hill yesterday listed Manchester United as 7-2 favourites ahead of Real Madrid (4-1), Bayern Munich and Lazio (6-1) and AC Milan (10-1). |
Federation Cup LAS VEGAS, Nov 23 (AFP) —World No 2 Lindsay Davenport outlasted 18th-ranked Kim Clijsters 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 6-3 here yesterday and the defending champion USA defeated Belgium to secure a Federation Cup finals berth. Australian Open champion Davenport’s triumph combined with No 4 Monica Seles win over 48th-ranked Justine Henin 7-6 (7/1), 6-2 to ensure a team triumph in the best-of-three semifinal matchup. A later “dead rubber” doubles match would decide the final us victory margin on us captain Billie Jean King’s 57th birthday. The Americans will face Spain in a best-of-five championship series tomorrow in their sixth meeting in the Federation Cup final. The us team beat Spain in 1989 and 1996 while Spain downed the Americans in 1991, 1994 and 1995. Wimbledon and us open runner-up Davenport surrendered a service break to Clijsters in the ninth game of the second set off a forehand winner by the 17-year-old prodigy, who held serve to force the final set. But Davenport needed only five points to take a break on Clijsters’ first service game of the third set for a 2-0 lead. The American held serve the rest of the way for the victory. In the firstset tie-breaker, Davenport hit a forehand winner and Clijsters netted a backhand to give the American three set points. Davenport sent a forehand wide but won when Clijsters netted another backhand. Nine-time Grand Slam champion Seles, in her first match with the 18-year-old Belgian, squandered a 5-0 first-set edge when distracted by intestinal cramps. “I haven’t had diarrhea in ages so it was just really strange,” Seles said. “At 4-0 I just had to go to the bathroom. She started playing well and all of a sudden it was 5-all. Seles broke Henin’s first two service games to seize a 5-0 lead in the first set, saving four break points on her own service in the fifth game. But Henin won her next 10 service points in a row and broke Seles twice to level at 5-5. “For sure I could have won the first set. After that I think everything was possible,” Henin said. “If I didn’t make a lot of mistakes the first five games, I win the set. I played faster than her. I played better than her.” Henin, who saved three set points in the seventh game, had a break point in the 11th game. But the Belgian waffled, netting a forehand to let Seles escape. That set the stage for the lopsided tie-breaker. Seles hit two service winners and a backhand winner on her way to a 6-0 lead while Henin netted three backhands including the last point. Seles, who lost to top-ranked Martina Hingis in last Sunday’s final of the WTA Championship, raised her game to put down her rival’s challenge. Seles broke in the third game of set two when Henin hit a backhand long and seized a 5-2 lead by breaking her again on a backhand winner. Seles ended it after 97 minutes on her first match point opportunity with a service winner. |

Second-seeded Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov also strolled into the second round, defeating Jonas Froberg of Sweden 6-4, 6-2. Top seed Norman, who has claimed five titles this year, took just 58 minutes yesterday to down Ruud with blistering groundstrokes and an almost faultless serve. Norman faces American Jan-Michael Gambill in the second round. |

Woods eagles twice to
beat Vijay KAUAI (Hawaii) Nov 23 (Reuters) — Tiger Woods found a sensational way to put the finishing touch on a spectacular year — a remarkable come-from-behind win at the Grand Slam of Golf. Woods eagled the final hole of the 36-hole, four-player special event to force a playoff with Masters champion Vijay Singh, then eagled the 18th again to claim the title. The two eagles gave Woods his third consecutive title in the Grand Slam of Golf. The
US Open, British Open and PGA Championship winner collected another $400,000 to go with his record $9,188,321 in official
PGA Tour earnings for the season. Woods, who was coming off his 10th win of the year in Thailand over the weekend, shot a four-under-par 68 for the second day of the two-day event to catch Singh at five-under 139. Singh led by two strokes after the first round but settled for second place and pocketed $250,000. Tom Lehman finished third at one-under 143 with Paul Azinger fourth at 149. The event is supposed to bring together the winners of the year’s four majors. Lehman and Azinger were added as alternates since Woods alone holds three of the four major titles. |

Gaur in fine nick
JAMMU: Himachal Pradesh overcame early hiccups to reach 222 for five at close on the opening day of their North Zone Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir here today. Opener Nishal Gaur, who remained unbeaten 85, Rajiv Nayyar (45) and Virender Sharma (44) ensured a good total for Himachal after they lost three wickets for 83 runs in the morning. Electing to bat, Himachal ran into trouble soon when opener Arun Verma was caught in the slip off Surinder Singh for four with the team total on nine. Nayyar then added 73 runs for the second wicket with Gaur before being bowled by Surinder Singh for 45. Newcomer Amit Sharma was dismissed after adding just one run to the total but Sangram Singh (25) and Virender Sharma contributed handsomely in the company of gaur to take the score to a decent total. Indian Oil, BP to clash in final NEW DELHI, Nov 23 (PTI)— The two Navratna oil companies, Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum (BP) will clash in the 37th Nehru-ONGC hockey tournament today. Bharat Petroleum defeated defending champions Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) 3-2 while Indian Oil pipped Army XI, 8-7 after the jawans staged a suberb rally from 0-3 to draw level through a last-minute penalty corner, which was completed after the final hooter. After dominating the proceedings in the first 15 minutes, when they thrice came close to a goal, Indian Oil took the lead in the 20th minute, when Kamlesh Kumar deflected a free hit by Jaswinder Singh. Eight minutes later, they earned their third penalty corner. Bikramjeet Singh relayed the ball to Inderjeet who could have scored from close on he passed it to Deepak Thakur positioned on the other side who tapped it in. Though Army forced three penalty corners in the 26th, 28th and 29th minutes, the Indian Oil defence, where Shamsuzuha played an excellent
game, tempts. Immediately after the break, Army’s Samson Fernandes was twice guilty of missing chances. |
