Board President’s XI in command FARIDABAD, Nov 14 (PTI) — Board President’s XI displayed their batting prowess frustrating the Zimbabweans to a great extent even as the three-day tour match headed towards a draw on the second day here today. The Board XI were in the driver’s seat having scored 52 without loss in their second innings, a lead of 130 runs after Zimbabwe surprisingly declared their first innings at 236-5, still runs 78 runs short. Opener Ravneet Rickey was batting on 26 while Vijay Dahiya, named in the Indian team for the first Test against Zimbabwe starting in Delhi on November 18, was not out of 23 when the stumps were drawn. After Board XI declared their first innings at the overnight score of 314 for five, Zimbabwe made a confident start with opener Gavin Rennie top-scoring with 79. The Africans lost momentum midway through their innings and lost four wickets in the post-lunch session. In what seemed to be a gamble by Zimbabwe skipper Guy Whittall, the visitors declared their first innings eight overs after tea, but failed to get any breakthrough. Whittall was going strong at 30 that included five fours and a six, while Brian Murphy was batting on 14 when the visiting captain made the declaration. Rickey looked to make up for his failure in the first innings and played fine strokes in his confident knock. His powerful square cut and gentle leg glance off Henry Olonga to the fence were classic copy-book shots. Rickey then flicked Olonga for another four as the Zimbabweans saw their gameplan backfiring. Dahiya, who scored a strokeful 50 in the first innings, continued from where he left off and batted fluently as both the two openers hit four boundaries each. Earlier, Grant Flower (49) and Rennie gave Zimbabwe a fluent start scoring at brisk pace hitting the generally erratic Santosh Saxena. The openers struck fours and also ran quick singles as Zimbabwe took lunch at 85 without loss. Off-spinner Ashish Kapoor gave his team the first breakthrough when he uprooted the off-stump of Grant Flower in the third over of the second session. Flower, who missed his half-century by one run, hit eight fours in his 120-ball knock realising 94 runs for the opening wicket — the highest of the Zimbabwe innings. Board President’s captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar struck with his very first ball to have Stuart Carlisle, who looked uncomfortable from the start against the spinners. Carlisle was caught at midwicket by Rahul Sanghvi after scoring just four runs. Trevor Madondo then joined Rennie, who at the other end was playing elegantly making good of the sweep shot that fetched him number of boundaries. Rennie, however, had his share of luck when Abbas Ali dropped him at forward short leg off Sanghvi when he was on 49. Rennie reached his half-century off 120 balls which included five runs. Madondo hit two fours in his 46-ball 26 and added 60 runs for the third wicket with Rennie before becoming second victim of Kapoor, who trapped him leg before wicket. Rennie was dismissed soon after for 79 when Abbas Ali made up for his earlier miss and took a brilliant catch off Virendra Sehwag. Rennie hit nine fours in his 183 ball knock. Zimbabwe lost two quick wickets as Sehwag struck in his next over having Mluleki Nkala caught by Dahiya for nought. Whittall, who went in at the fall of Madondo, meanwhile played some powerful strokes and raced to 20 before getting given a reprieve at that score. Kanitkar dropped Whittall off Sehwag and the batsman celebrated it with a six and a four off the next two balls before announcing the declaration. SCOREBOARD India (first innings): 314-5 decl. Prosecution of Azhar, Ajay under PCA? NEW DELHI, Nov 14 (PTI) — The Union Law Ministry has said that former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin and player Ajay Sharma can be prosecuted under Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) but said the prosecution “should be initiated only when there is evidence beyond doubt”. Giving its opinion on the CBI report on match-fixing and betting to the Sports Ministry, the Law Ministry has said that to initiate prosecution of these two players, who work in government undertakings, under PCA “there needs to be evidence and the measure of evidence will be evidence beyond doubt”. The Law Ministry has opined that prosecution of Azhar and Sharma could be under the charges of amassing disproportionate wealth, a top official of the ministry said. On the disciplinary action that should be taken against the players, the ministry is believed to have said that this jurisidiction belonged to the BCCI, he said. “Sports being on the state list, the jurisdction of the central government is limited and it may not be in a position to give any direction in regard to disciplinary action,” he said. The Law Ministry has suggested to the Sports Ministry to “advise BCCI to take action (against the players) after appreciating evidence,” the top official said. Azhar is Chief Manager and PRO with public sector State Bank of India while Sharma is employed with the Central Warehousing Corporation. Explaining the role of the Centre in dealing with the scandal, the Law Ministry has said the Central Government’s jurisdiction may essentially be in relation to “whether the investigating agency should be asked to prosecute the players or not”. “The offences of cheating may not be made out on the reading of the report and the requirements of the Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code,” the official said. Elaborating on the opinion given on the applicability of PCA to Azhar and Sharma, he said under this Act there were certain offences which were committed in the discharge of the
official functions. “This obviously will not apply as playing cricket does not fall within the meaning of discharging official functions,” he said. However, there were some offences for which a public servant can be prosecuted, for example disproportionate accumulation of wealth, which may not relate to his official function, the official said. The CBI in its report to the government had alleged that Azhar had “fixed” cricket matches with the help of Ajay Jadeja and Nayan Mongia for large sums, and listed England’s Alec Stewart, Australia’s Mark Waugh as well as Sri Lanka’s Arjuna Ranatunga among the foreign players who were either offered or paid money by bookies. Former international players Manoj Prabhakar and Ajay Sharma are the two other Indians named by the investigating agency. |
Ajay Sharma fails to turn up NEW DELHI, Nov 14 — The much awaited questioning of the former Delhi captain Ajay Sharma did not take place today, as the right-handed batsman requested the BCCI appointed special commissioner and former CBI Joint Director, Mr K. Madhavan to provide him with a copy of the agency’s report. “Ajay Sharma has sent a letter stating that he does not have the copy of the CBI report and would be unable to present himself for questioning without going through the allegations levelled against him by the agency in the report,” Mr Madhavan told The Tribune. The BCCI special commissioner said: “Ajay Sharma had earlier requested me to give a suitable date in Delhi for questioning as he was not well. At that time, he had not mentioned anything about the CBI report.” “I will issue summons to him in a few days” he said. Asked about his decision on the former Indian captain, Mohammad
Azharuddin, the former CBI joint director said, “so far I have not heard anything from him. I will wait for a day to two before deciding on the future course of
action.” Mr Madhavan had stated that he would be forced to go by the evidence available with the CBI, if Azharuddin fails to appear before the
commission. Azharuddin had not appeared before the commission on the plea that he did not have a copy of the CBI. However, he has, now been given a copy of the report. Of the five cricketers indicted by the CBI in the betting and match-fixing report, former all-rounder Manoj
Prabhakar, wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia, middle-order batsman Ajay Jadeja and the physio Dr Ali Irani have appeared before the
commission. Mr Madhavan reiterated that he would submit his report to the BCCI before the end of next week as the BCCI officials are meeting in Calcutta on November 29 specifically to discuss this
issue. BCCI chief Mr A.C. Muthaiah has said the board’s working committee will take a final decision on the fate of “indicted” players by the month end after Mr Madhavan completes his inquiry and makes recommendations. The CBI report on match-fixing and other related malpractices had indicted these five players of indulging in match-fixing and betting lured by bookies. All the players named in the CBI report have been banned from playing both international and domestic cricket pending inquiry by Mr
Madhavan. |
CBI to probe underworld-players nexus? NEW DELHI, Nov 14 (UNI) — After uncovering the match-fixing scandal in Indian cricket, the Central Bureau of Investigation has now taken the charge of exposing the cricketer-bookie-underworld nexus to save the game from getting into the hands of criminal elements. Considering that there is a rising interest of underworld in cricket in India and any ignorance to the fact could cause dearly to the national security, the CBI will probe the matter not only within the country but also abroad. The agency sources said today: “We are now investigating the nexus between the underworld with some of India’s leading cricketers and administrators and bookies. The CBI is going deep into the underworld-cricketer nexus which has been unearthed but its dimensions are not yet fully understood.’’ The CBI had evidence about the alleged links of a few Indian players, including former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, with the underworld. The underworld-cricket nexus was established during the probe into the match-fixing case. About the possibility of any special team being despatched to other countries in connection with this, the sources said the agency officials are always busy investigating ‘serious’ cases. The teams are likely to be sent to Dubai, the UAE and certain other parts of the world in an effort to collect maximum details about the nexus. The CBI during the investigation would also probe the involvement of underworld and cricketers in money- laundering. The CBI had in its report on match-fixing warned that if concrete steps were not taken immediately, the underworld could take overall control of the betting racket. Negligence of the police and other authorities in allowing “wagering to turn into an organised racket, particularly with the involvement of the underworld”, was cited by the CBI as the reason. The possible underworld involvement in betting in Indian cricket could be seen in the statements of former India skipper Azharuddin and former physiotherapist Dr Ali Irani who had indicated the involvement of mafia dons Anees Ibrahim, Abu Salem and Sharad Shetty. The CBI report quoted Azharuddin during his interrogation as stating that “Abu Salem had rung him up on a couple of occasions to fix matches but he had refused to ‘do’ matches for him as he was already doing it for Anees
Ibrahim.’’ The statement of Dr Ali Irani supported the CBI’s fears that underworld was involved in the dirty game. The report said, “It does appear that what may have been small-time wagering (which to some extent is inevitable) has now been replaced by an organised syndicate, and this syndicate has started interfering with the purity of the sports”. |
Incriminating papers seized in CBI raids NEW DELHI, Nov 14 (UNI) — After completing the scrutiny of the material seized during the countrywide raids at the office and residential premises of former ICC chief Jagmohan Dalmiya and six top former and serving Doordarshan officials, the CBI today said it had seized ‘incriminating documents’ relating to granting of telecast rights for sports. CBI sources told the UNI that preliminary investigation show that the DD officials misused their official position to benefit private TV business houses for heavy financial gains and with an intention to cause loss to the public exchequer. They said: “The scrutiny of the seized documents showed that they were ‘incriminating’ in nature.” The scrutiny of the material seized was continuing and there were possibilities of the concerned DD officials and private parties being questioned by the agency. The raids were also carried out at the offices of three private firms - Stracon India Limited of Siddharth Ray, World Tel Inc, (UK) and Worldtel India, Bangalore, headed by sports promoter Mark Mascarenhas and United Television, Mumbai. The sources said the raids by the CBI sleuths under the overall supervision of Special Director G. Achari yesterday were conducted for about 10 hours from 8 a.m. till 6 p.m. A large amount of cash running into crores of rupees and valuables were seized in the raids. The raids were carried out in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore and Lucknow in connection with the probe into the alleged bungling in allotment of television rights of cricket matches since 1996 and also in the allotment of telecast rights for prestigious tennis tournaments like French Open and Wimbledon in 1997. The raids targets were the premises of former-Doordarshan officials Mr K.S. Sarma, Mr K. Kunhikrishnan, Mr Rakesh Bahadur, Mr Sanjeev Datta, Dr P.K. Seth and Mr Anurag
Mishra. |

Gagandeep bowls Punjab to innings win AMRITSAR, Nov 14 — Career best haul by medium pacer Gagandeep Singh sent Haryana crashing to a humiliating innings and 123-run defeat on the last day of the four-day Ranji Trophy league match (North Zone) at the Gandhi Ground here today. Gagandeep, maintaining an impeccable line and length, made the rival batting look spineless on a track which had no devil underneath. The batsmen did not show the determination to stay at the wicket. Gagandeep was richly rewarded for his perseverence, finishing with a flattering haul of six for 14 in the second innings as Haryana just managed to surpass their lowest-ever Ranji Trophy score of 63 made against the same opposition and were all out for 82. In the morning when Haryana came out to bat in their first innings Gagandeep was again in the thick of action and claimed two wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 281, roughly one hour and a half after the start of the play. Hence it was truely an outstanding effort from the young bowlers who had an overall tally of eight wickets from the day and nine overall. He was well supported by off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and leggie Sandeep Sawal, who scalped two wickets each to hasten the Haryana batting collapse. From Haryana, only Rajesh Puri could reach the double-figure mark. Puri looked comfortable on the wicket and was not afraid to play his strokes. His straight six, the first and the only shot over the fence of the innings off Harbhajan, had the stamp of authority. It was Puri who ensured that the side did not have to face the humilitation of being bundled out for their lowest score in the championship as at 18 for six when Gagandeep had jolted the innings and the threat looked like in a distinct possiblility. Haryana, who still needed 89 runs to avert the follow-on, were bowled out for 281 runs in the first innings falling short by 55 runs. In their second innings they fared even worse. Gagandeep started the collapse in his first over castling opener Jasvir, who chose to leave the ball. Harbhajan then consumed Paramjit having him caught at short leg. Then Gagandeep in the space of just 25 deliveries wrecked the Haryana innings taking four more wickets to leave the visitors in the most precarious situation at 18 for six. Puri displayed good temperament and batted well which saved Haryana from total ignominy. Incidentally, this is the third innings victory for Punjab in three matches who are now sitting pretty with 24 points in their kitty. Haryana has so far had a forgettable campaign and have just three points after three matches. Punjab well now travel to New Delhi where they will clash with Services, while Haryana next face Himachal Pradesh at Mandi. Both the matches will start from November 17. Sarandeep, Dahiya in Test squad FARIDABAD, Nov 14 (UNI) — Punjab off spinner Sarandeep Singh will be the lone new face with wicketkeeper Vijay Dahiya replacing Saba Karim in the Indian squad which will take on Zimbabwe in the first cricket Test of the two-match series in Delhi, beginning on November 18. The national selectors, led by Chandu Borde, have also dropped seamer Venkatesh Prasad who played in the just concluded one-off Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka. The 14-member squad was announced by BCCI secretary J.Y. Lele during the match between Zimbabwe and Board President’s XI. Dahiya, the Delhi wicketkeeper, has been in and out of the one-day squad and gets the nod for the first time for the classical version of the game. Karim, who was recalled for the Dhaka Test after a lay-off due to an eye injury, failed to perform with distinction either with the bat or the gloves. Dahiya, on the other hand, had a good show in last month’s Coca Cola Cup tri-series in Sharjah. Prasad, who has taken 85 wickets in 29 Tests, did not play in the Test. Sarandeep’s selection must have come as a surprise to many expecting Aashish Kapoor, who is playing against the visitors here, to stage a comeback. Mr Lele said Aashish and Harbhajan Singh were discussed before the selectors picked up Sarandeep who played the visitors’ three-day match in Indore and returned without any scalp. Mr Lele said skipper Sourav Ganguly wanted an off-spinner as Zimbabwe have quite a few left-handers in their ranks. The selctors had dropped the team mangement’s request for an off-spinner before the tri-series in Sharjah where India played against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. The BCCI secretary said John Wright, the newly appointed coach of the Indian team, has arrived in India and will join the squad on November 16 when the players assemble in New Delhi. The squad: Sourav Ganguly (captain), S. Ramesh, S.S. Das, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Vijay Dahiya (wicketkeeper), Ajit Agarkar, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Sarandeep Singh, Sunil Joshi and Murli Kartik. |
Clijsters ousts Sanchez on debut NEW YORK, Nov 14 (Reuters) — Belgian teenager Kim Clijsters made a sensational Chase Championships debut last night, knocking fifth-seeded veteran Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario out in the first round of the WTA Tour’s season finale. A late replacement to the field of 16 when Serena Williams and Mary Pierce pulled out injured last week, the 17-year-old Clijsters made the most of her opportunity, smiling her way through a 7-5 6-4 victory over the 1993 runner-up who had qualified for the prestigious year-end event for the 12th consecutive year. “My preparation was not great. I wasn’t expecting to play here,’’ said the 19th-ranked Clijsters, who belted 28 winners and converted 5-of-6 break chances. “I played a good year and it was just a present for me to play.’’ The spirited battle was almost enough to erase the bad taste left by the tournament opener, a dreadful match between fourth-seeded Spaniard Conchita Martinez and 21st-ranked Russian Elena Likhovtseva. Like Clijsters, Likhovtseva was a late replacement, added to the field when Amelie Mauresmo pulled out injured last Friday. Unlike Clijsters, Likhovtseva failed to take advantage of her gift, blowing a 6-2 4-2 lead to Martinez, who was also making her 12th consecutive appearance here. In what had to be one of the worst displays of tennis in the long history of women’s play on the blue carpet at Madison Square Garden, Martinez managed to rally for a 2-6 6-4 6-3 victory. “I felt I couldn’t do my game. I was feeling weird out there,’’ said Martinez, who nevertheless earned a quarter-final against either seventh seed Anna Kournikova or Jennifer Capriati because Likhovtseva played even worse than she did. Clijsters, despite a case of jet lag that had her wide awake at 4
a.m., came out on fire as she reeled off the first 12 points for a swift 3-0 lead on the way to a 5-2 advantage. “That’s one of my strongest points, to get in the match and start off well,’’ said Clijsters. The never-say-die Spaniard, still the fighter a month before her 29th birthday, battled back to even the set at 5-5. But Clijsters, going for winners from both wings, held serve for 6-5 and broke Sanchez-Vicario to take the set. Clijsters, who also beat the four-time Grand Slam winner on the way to winning the Leipzig title earlier this month, jumped out to another 5-2 lead in the second set and reached a match point in the ninth game. Going for a winner on match point, the Belgian teen drilled a forehand just wide to keep the fifth seed alive. She tried a drop shot on the next point but the speedy Spaniard ran it down and answered with a winning drop shot of her own. A sly smile crept across Sanchez-Vicario’s face as if to say: “I guess no one told her you don’t beat me with a drop shot.’’ Sanchez-Vicario pulled out that game, breaking Clijsters to reach 5-4, and rolled to a 40-0 lead in the next game, only to watch the talented teenager claw her way back into that game. Clijsters saved four game points before reaching her second match point by belting a forehand winner off a defensive lob by the Spaniard. This time, Sanchez-Vicario sailed a forehand long and a beaming Clijsters raised her arms in triumph. The combatants kissed at the net and Clijsters took a little curtain call, waving to the appreciative crowd. Sanchez-Vicario’s vast advantage in big match experience and legendary fight spirit were simply not enough to carry the day against the rising star, who next faces either defending champion Lindsay Davenport or Russian Elena Dementieva, another tournament newcomer. |

sanctity: Joginder FEROZEPORE, Nov 14 — While commending the role of the CBI in the infamous cricket match-fixing case Mr Joginder Singh, member, executive committee, Interpol, and former Director, CBI, said the Board of Control for Cricket in India should not use the CBI report to take action against the indicted players because since it was a preliminary report only, it would give leeway to the players to escape. Mr Singh said the CBI report was not a legal document and has no legal sanctity. Hence it was not sufficient to institute a case. He asserted that all those cricketers who were proved guilty in this case should bid adieu to the game for ever and apart from a life ban, some more punitive measures should be taken against them. It is pertinent to mention here that the BCCI had temporarily suspended five cricketers — Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Ajay Sharma, Nayan Mongia and Manoj Prabhakar who named in the 162-page CBI report. The BCCI were appointed an inquiry commission under former CBI Joint Director, Mr K. Madhavan. While referring to the allegations of Mr I.S. Bindra who had pointed out this matter to the BCCI well in advance, he said that this racket would not have occurred if the evil had been nipped in the bud. He further said it did not imply that those players who had not been indicted in the CBI report were not guilty. “It is simply because nobody has dared to say anything against them. He mentioned that Navjot Sidhu, former Test player had allegedly once said that he could not say anything against Kapil because he had many favours on him. Mr Singh said that the Income Tax Department was looking into certain cases. When asked about his intention to join active politics, Mr Singh replied, “Not now, but at some point of time later on.” |
