India struggle against Rahman

DHAKA, Nov 12 (PTI) — Captain Saurav Ganguly and Sunil Joshi pulled India out of a sticky situation but they were still 34 runs behind Bangladesh first innings total of 400 with only three wickets in hand at the end of the third day of their one-off cricket Test match here today.

Ganguly (84) and Joshi (batting 71) played fine knocks after India, 190 for five at one stage, looked in danger of being shot out below Bangladesh total.

The duo added 121 runs for the seventh wicket before Ganguly became the fifth victim of Bangladesh skipper Naimur Rahman, but India were still precariously placed at 366 for seven at close.

After the batsmen accomplished their job with aplomb putting up a huge first innings total, it was now Bangladesh’s bowlers to impress by their performance with the captain himself leading the pack.

Rahman claimed five crucial wickets including that of Sachin Tendulkar, Murali Kartik and Ganguly to wrest the initiative as Indian batsmen struggled against an insipid bowling attack.

India started the day at 81 for one with overnight batsmen Sadgopan Ramesh and Murali Kartik looking confident though scoring slowly.

Ramesh, resuming at 40, hit Hasibul Hossain and Bikash Ranjan Das for boundaries to bring up his sixth half-century in his 10th Test match.

But Bikash Ranjan struck back when his incoming delivery took the edge of Ramesh’s bat and crashed onto the stumps to give Bangladesh their first breakthrough of the day.

Ramesh’s 58 came off 92 balls and contained six fours.

Rahul Dravid joined Kartik as Indians looked increasingly subdued. Dravid started hesitantly but found his rhythm later to play some beautiful strokes.

The stylish batsman, returning after a finger injury, was however unlucky to be given out caught at short leg by Al Shahriar off Rafique for 28 though television replays clearly showed the ball had missed his bat.

Kartik meanwhile was batting with ease though he got a chance at 23 when Aminul Islam dropped a sitter.

The biggest disappointment for India was the failure of Sachin Tendulkar who looked out of sorts in his 41-ball 18-run knock. He was caught at forward short leg by substitute Razin Saleh off Naimur Rahman much to the delight of the home crowd.

When Kartik finally departed to the same combination for a well made 43 off 119 balls that included five fours, India looked in deep trouble at 190 for five.

Saurav Ganguly added 46 runs with his Bengal team-mate Saba Karim (15) to take the score to 236 before the wicket-keeper was caught by Shariar Hossain off Rahman.

Then came the most fruitful stand of the day between Ganguly and Joshi.

Joshi, who was twice lucky escaping a run out chance on 12 and then dropped at 18, made maximum use of his chances and matched his captain stroke for stroke.

Ganguly batted in his elegant style and reached his 13th Test fifty off 79 balls just after tea with the help of five fours.

He was playing very confidently and looked set for a hundred when he fell trying to clear the long on boundary. He gave a simple catch to Al Shariar off Rahman.

Ganguly’s splendid knock came off 153 balls.

Joshi came into his own after Ganguly’s fall and posted his maiden half-century in Tests off just 59 balls.

He continued to play responsibly thereafter and remained not out on 71 that had eight well-timed hits to the fence. Ajit Agarkar was the other not out batsman on five.

Another chance for Test hopefuls

FARIDABAD, Nov 12 (PTI) — Some promising youngsters have a fine opportunity to press their case for a Test berth when Board President’s XI take on Zimbabwe in a three-day match starting here tomorrow.

The team for the first Test in New Delhi from November 18 is yet to be announced and the likes of Hemang Badani, captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Debashish Mohanty and Vijay Dahiya would like to impress the selectors with a good performance here.

Coach Roger Binny said it was a talented side and he would like to see a couple of them selected for Test side.

“Badani, Kanitkar, Mohanty and Vijay Bhardwaj have performed very well in the last season and I hope they come good here too,” Binny told reporters today after the team had a practice session in the morning.

“Dahiya is being dubbed as a one-day prospect, but I think he can play well in Tests too,” Binny said of the Delhi wicket-keeper who played in the ICC Knockout Tournament in Nairobi and the subsequent Sharjah triangular series but was left out for the one-off Test against Bangladesh currently being played in Dhaka.

Selection to the Indian side will be a long shot for veteran spinner Ashish Kapoor, who took 50 wickets last season, but Virendra Sehwag of Delhi and Punjab’s Ravneet Ricky are in the reckoning.

But all eyes would be on Kanitkar and Badani, two youngsters who have looked good in one-day internationals and would now like to stake their claim in the Test squad.

With the wicket looking good for batting, Binny said he would go for not more than two seamers.

The visitors who had a good outing in their tour opener against National Cricket Academy XI at Indore will look to continue their form and go into the first Test with confidence.

The strength of Zimbabwe is their batting which was amply proved at Indore when they declared both their innings at 300-plus scores with Andy Flower and Alistair Campbell hitting centuries in first and second innings, respectively.

Stuart Carlisle, Guy Whittal, Trevor Modondo are all among the runs and Zimbabwe should not have problems on a batsman friendly pitch here.

With captain Heath Streak back in the side the bowling will also get a boost. Travis Friend has performed admirably well for Zimbabwe and along with his captain and Mluleki Nkala and Henry Olonga will spearhead, what looks a decent, Zimbabwe attack.

Streak said he was looking forward to three days of good cricket to prepare well for the first Test. “The youngsters in the side have a good opportunity to prepare themselves and find their form for the Tests,” he said.

“Our batsmen have been playing well. I think we have a balanced bowling attack too that has the capability to take 20 wickets in a Test match.”

Zimbabwe have a few injury problems too with Bryan Strang almost ruled out for the match due to some dental problems. In his absence leg spinner Murphy may get a chance to play depending on the condition of the pitch.

Teams (from):
Board President’s XI: Hrishkesh Kanitkar (capt), Connard Williams, Ravneet Ricky, Abhijit Kale, Hemang Badani, Virender Sehwag, Abbas Ali, Vijay Bhardwaj, Vijay Dahiya (wk), Debasish Mohanty, Santosh Saxena, Iqbal Siddiqui, Rahul Sanghvi and Ashish Kapoor.

Zimbabwe: Guy Whittall (captain), Alistair Campbell, Stuart Carlisle, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Travis Friend, Trevor Madondo, Douglas Marillier, Mluleki Nkala, Henry Olonga, Gavin Rennie, Bryan Strang and Paul Strang.

Umpires: Sanjeeva Rao and Mahal.

Tail-enders take Punjab to 486
From Gopal Sharma
Tribune News Service

AMRITSAR, Nov 12 — A career best knock of 84 runs by off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and his 96-run partnership with medium pacer Bharat Bhushan for the last wicket — best for Punjab in the championship — put Punjab on top on the second day of the four-day North Zone Ranji Trophy league match against Haryana at the Gandhi Grounds here today.

Punjab innings looked like folding up within the 400-run mark when Harbhajan came in to bat. But his dogged efforts and good support from No 11 batsman Bharat Bhushan who remained not out on 30 saw Punjab innings reach fairly close to 500 runs taking the match firmly out of control of Haryana.

The hosts were well served by Pankaj Dharmani also who scored 89 runs before losing his wicket playing a rather lose shot to part-time gentle medium pacer Parinder Sharma, when the batsman looked good for hundred.

Haryana, chasing the daunting total, could not make a strong reply and by the time the stumps were drawn for the day had lost the wicket of opener Jasvir Singh, who was claimed by Harbhajan, to finish the day at 41 for one.

Earlier Haryana tasted immediate success as play began. Dinesh Mognia, who emerged the highest scorer from the side in the championship when he made an unbeaten 307 runs in the previous match at Jalandhar, was scalped by medium pacer Vineet Jain on the very first ball of the day as the visitors started with the new ball.

Reetinder Sodhi and Dharmani added 48 runs for the fifth-wicket stand before the former was adjudged caught in the slips off off-spinner Pankaj Thakur — the lone bowler from Haryana who commanded some respect from the batsmen. Dharmani continued to bat merrily and clobbered leg-spinner Amit Mishra straight, to longon and square leg boundaries in the same over to inch closer to the three-figure mark.

Thakur struck at this stage trapping Harminder Jugnu lbw. Vineet sent back Sandeep Sawal and Gagandeep in quick succession before Harbhajan’s impressive 102-ball knock studded with three sixes and eight fours frustrated the rival bowling attack putting his team firmly in a position from where they can put tremendous pressure on a new-look and relatively inexperienced Haryana squad which is yet to come up with a worthwhile performance in the championship so far.

Chopra slams double ton

NEW DELHI, Nov 12 (PTI) — Aakash Chopra hammered a double century in a serial to the carnage he had started yesterday as Delhi scored a massive 417 for eight before declaring their first innings against Himachal Pradesh on the second day of their North Zone Ranji Trophy match here today.

Chopra, unbeaten 147 after the first day, took over from where he had left and hit the Himachal bowlers all over the ground as Delhi asserted their batting supremacy over the visitors.

Himachal were then reduced to 106 for four at close with left-arm speedster Ashish Nehra playing an important role in rocking the opponents’ boat.

Nehra removed both the Himachal openers — Nischal Gaur for one and A. Verma (37) — before trapping Virender Sharma (8) leg before wicket for excellent figures of 13-3-35-3.

The Delhi paceman also had a hand in removing the fourth Himachal wicket of Amit Sharma (4) when he snapped the batsman off A.K. Suman as Himachal struggled against a strong Delhi.

Gaur was first to go, caught by Davinder Sharma with just one run on the scoreboard, but Verma and ever-reliable Rajiv Nayyar (batting 36) got together for a stand of 60 runs for the second wicket.

BCCI affiliation
UTCA leaving nothing to chance
By Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 12 — The senior functionaries of the UT Cricket Association have left nothing to chance as they await the arrival of the fact-finding team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The fact-finding team will examine the cricketing facilities available in the Union Territory. On the basis of the report of the fact-finding team the BCCI will decide whether to grant direct affiliation to the Union Territory of Chandigarh. This association has been waging a relentless battle to get direct affiliation with the board. If the affiliation is granted it will enable players from Chandigarh to play directly in all tournaments conducted by the BCCI.

The decision to send the committee to Chandigarh and other places was taken at the last annual general body meeting of the BCCI held at Chennai in September last. The members of the fact-finding team are former Hyderabad-based Test cricketer Shivlal Yadav, the secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, Mr Ratnakar Shetty, and the BCCI executive secretary, Mr Sharad Diwadkar. Besides visiting Chandigarh, the team will also visit Pondicherry, whose application for affiliation is also pending. The BCCI is also in the process of granting affiliation to the newly-created states of Chattisgarh, Uttaranchal and Jharkhand.

According to indications available here, the BCCI fact-finding team should be coming to Chandigarh later this month. The exact dates of the visit will be finalised by the BCCI secretary, Mr J.Y. Lele. Mr Lele, who will be in the national capital on November 14 when the Indian team for the first Test against the visiting Zimbabwe will be selected , might fix the dates for the visit of the board’s fact-finding team after consultations with officials of the UT Cricket Association.

The UT Cricket Association will take the members of the fact-finding team to the various places where cricket is played as also the places where systematic training is imparted to young boys. The team will be taken to the Sector 16 cricket stadium where the Chandigarh Sports Department itself runs a coaching centre, as also DAV College in Sector 10 and DAV School in Sector 8. The team will also examine the facilities at the Panjab University campus. The BCCI team will also be taken to the Gursagar gurdwara ground behind the Sukhna Lake where full-fledged cricketing facilities, including a turf wicket, exist. The team will also visit the coaching centres being run by former Punjab Ranji Trophy wicketkeeper Arun Sharma at Sector 44 (this centre has produced a number of players who play for Punjab in various tournaments) as also the centre run by Mr Surinder Singh ‘‘Baijee’’ at Sector 19 (this centre has produced players who have turned out for Haryana in various tournaments). The fact-finding team will also be taken to the Sector 32 centre where also the administration runs a coaching centre.

The members of the BCCI team will also be provided information on the number of players in the under-14, under-16. under-19 and under-22 age group categories who have played for either Punjab, Haryana as also Himachal Pradesh but had learnt their cricketing skills in Chandigarh. Also, Chandigarh-based players who have turned out for the three states in the National Cricket Championship for the Ranji Trophy as also those who have played for north zone in the Duleep Trophy Cricket Championship will also be listed.

It is interesting to note here that the Chandigarh district team (for purposes of cricket Chandigarh is treated as a district unit by both the Punjab Cricket Association as also the Haryana Cricket Association) won the Punjab Inter-District (Under-16) Cricket Championship this year.

The UT Cricket Association officials will also inform the fact-finding team of the other facilities available in Chandigarh like starred hotel, airport and two Shatabdis which run between Chandigarh and Delhi every day. In any case Chandigarh has already hosted one Test and a number of one-day internationals and hosting such matches should not pose much of a problem . But first, the BCCI must decided on the affiliation issue.

Kapil also to be questioned

CALCUTTA, Nov 12 (PTI) — The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) fact-finding commissioner, K. Madhavan, today indicated that he would question former captain Kapil Dev and speak to Sachin Tendulkar even as cricketers Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia and former India team physio Ali Irani appeared before him in connection with the inquiry into betting and match-fixing.

Mr Madhavan told reporters here that Kapil Dev would be questioned on the basis of "evidence" given by the cricketers, including Manoj Prabhakar, who appeared before him in last two days.

He said he would also talk to Tendulkar as he seemed to be in the know of certain things.

"I will not hesitate to talk to Tendulkar to get the name of the board official," he said when asked if the star batsman would be examined, based on his submission to the CBI that he had earlier informed a board official about his suspicion of players indulging in such activities.

Those questioned by Mr Madhavan on the second day of his probe today were Mongia, Jadeja and Irani.

Only Jadeja preferred to talk to the press. "I am not running away from you. Whatever I have to say, I have told Mr Madhavan".

Mr Madhavan said: "I will also include in my report to the BCCI, a suggestion that they take up with the CBI through the Government of India, to introduce suitable laws in order to curb misconduct by cricketers in future," he said.

The CBI was presently unable to chargesheet those allegedly involved as the law did not permit it in these cases, he said.

Former captain Azharuddin, named in the CBI report, did not appear before Mr Madhavan.

Mr Madhavan refused to divulge whether Prabhakar, Mongia, Jadeja and Irani had given fresh evidence.

"It is human nature for anyone to defend himself. I have a duty to consider their submissions. I will not hesitate to call even persons who have not been indicted by the CBI in its report".

He had earlier stated that he would not be giving information on whether new evidence was given by witnesses.

He said ‘you will realise that if the CBI has indicted players, it has also made some criticism about the BCCI. They (players and BCCI) have also come out with statements criticising the CBI report.’

On Azharuddin’s non-appearance, Mr Madhavan said he would be given another chance to present himself. "Once Azharuddin had talked to me to say that he is not in a position to appear as he has not been supplied with a copy of the CBI report. I had told him that it will be given’.

Azharuddin had not contacted him after that, he said

Regarding examining of the BCCI officials, he said he would hold a preliminary meeting with board President A.C. Muthiah on some clarifications.

"Mr Muthiah will be examined on his position as the BCCI President and he might have to soon convene a board meeting before answering my queries" Mr Madhavan said.

Asked who would play the role of a judge in deciding on the punishment to be meted out to the guilty, he said "I am playing the role of a judge, but I do not have the powers to punish the guilty. The BCCI will decide on it based on my analysis after cross examination of witnesses," he said.

Azhar continues to be elusive

CHENNAI, Nov 12 (PTI) — Former captain Mohammed Azharuddin continued to be elusive to the cricket board with its fact finding commissioner k madhavan, who is cross examining the cricketers named in the CBI report on match fixing, today saying that he had no information yet on the former’s appearance.

Talking to reporters after a 40-minute lunch break during his cross-examination of the cricketers at the Raddison hotel here, Mr Madhavan said another opportunity would be given to Azharuddin to appear before him.

Azharuddin and five others, who have been named in the CBI report, had been asked to present themselves for the cross-examination by Mr Madhavan.

While Manoj Prabhakar was cross-examined yesterday, Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia and former physio Ali Irani are being interrogated today. Another player Ajay Sharma had cited health reasons and requested that he be examined in Delhi.

Asked whether he would question Azharuddin if he arrived now, as rumoured, Mr Madhavan categorically said he would not be able to give time for the former captain as he was fully tied up with others. Besides, he was leaving for Delhi by the evening flight.

Lewis retains heavyweight titles

LAS VEGAS, Nov 12 (Reuters) Lennox Lewis, peppering David Tua with left jabs and occasional powerful combinations, retained his International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council heavyweight titles with a unanimous 12-round decision yesterday.

There were no knockdowns in the fight, which from time to time brought boos from the crowd of 12,000 at the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino. Several times in the fight, some in the crowd chanted “Tua, Tua, Tua.”

Both men were warned for low blows, Lewis in the second round and Tua in the eighth. But for the most part it was a clean fight, despite concern by the Tua camp that Lewis would fight dirty.

It was apparent from the opening bell that Tua was going to have a very difficult time getting inside on the big Briton.

Tua stalked Lewis throughout the fight, but Lewis, who had a 15-inch (38 cm) advantage in reach and was seven inches (17.8 cm) taller, stood back and fired his jab in Tua’s face, keeping the 27-year-old Tua at bay.

Lewis was able to land his jab almost at will, frustrating Tua, who, bobbing and weaving, stalked his opponent throughout the bout.

According to Compu Box punch statistics from ringside, Lewis landed 213 jabs to Tua’s 51.

Tua was forced at times to leap to try to land his left hook.

Tua’s best punch
Tua’s best punch of the night was a left hook, sending Lewis into the ropes just as the bell rang ending the second round. Lewis nodded that it was a good shot.

Tua also landed a solid left hook to the head early in the fourth round, but Lewis quickly regrouped and used his piercing jab to keep Tua away from him.

In the ninth round, as the crowd booed, Lewis pasted Tua with a left-right-left combination that shuddered Tua. For much of the rest of the round, Lewis kept his right hand cocked, looking for an opening to rock Tua again.

In the 10th round Lewis landed a powerful left and right followed by a clubbing right that send Tua stumbling into the ropes. Lewis finished the round shuffling his feat in imitation of the famous Muhammad Ali shuffle.

By the 11th round Lewis was simply taking target practice on Tua’s head.

Tua suffered a small cut under his left eye, but it was not a factor in the fight.

Judge Chuck Giampa had it 118-110, Dave Moretti 119-109 and Jerry Roth 117-111 for the British fighter.

“If you come to war, you have to bring your whole arsenal, not just a left hook and a haircut,’’ said Lewis, repeating a line he has used all week long.

Durable Tua
“He’s pretty durable and can take a punch. I didn’t think there was much power behind the left hook. I was doing all the work in the fight. Right now I’ll take on all comers.’’

Lewis, referring to the last round when Tua desperately needed a knockout, said: “he just kept waiting around, trying to land that left hook.”

Tua’s manager Kevin Barry said in the second round Tua reinjured a rib on his left side that he originally had injured two months ago. Barry said Tua “tore some cartilage” on his rib.

“He really couldn’t move to his left or right,” Barry said.

“I’m making no excuses. I did the best I could. I just kept trying,” said the Samoan-born Tua, who lives in New Zealand. “I’m going to go home and relax for a while. I’ll be back.

Lewis, who has said he would like to fight former champion Mike Tyson, said: “If Tyson wants to come to test, I’ll put him to rest. Lennox lewis is the best.”

Tyson did not come to the fight, despite rumors that he would earlier this week.

Both men staged theatrical entrances into the arena.

The warm-up for Tua featured a man dressed in a Samoan warrior’s garb and with black markings on his face blowing a mournful note on a conch shell.

Tua entered the arena to the drumbeats of traditional Samoan warriors. Draped around the 27-year-old fighter’s neck were the blood-red seed pods from a sacred tree that the warriors are said to have worn into battle.

Lewis was announced by a royal blaring of trumpets and preceded by torch bearers men dressed as Knight.

Tua is now 37-2. Lewis improved his record to 36-1-1.

Lewis was paid about $ 8 million for the fight and

Tua about $ 4 million. Tua, at 5-10 (1.77 m,) weighed 245 pounds (111 kg).

The 35-year-old Lewis, 6-5” (1.96 m) weighed 249 pounds (113 kg).

Atwal wins Star Alliance Open

HONG KONG, Nov 12 (PTI) — India’s Arjun Atwal won his second title in the space of eight days today when he triumphed in the $ 300,000 Star Alliance Open.

Last Sunday Atwal won the Hero Honda Masters in Gurgaon, and today he tasted victory again following a head-to-head battle against Taiwan’s Yeh Wei-Tze in cold and windy weather at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club.

Atwal, who started the final round tied with Yeh, led by four at one point on the front nine, trailed by a stroke with four to play but eventually won by two shots.

The Indian golfer fired a two-over-par 72 to finish on 12-under-par 268, while Yeh closed with a 74. Atwal, who also won the Indian Open last season and now has three Davidoff Tour titles to his credit, earned $ 48,450 for first place, while Yeh won $ 33,390.

Germany’s Alex Cejka was the only player to break par on the final day with a 68 and ended tied for third, four behind Yeh, with South Africans Hendrik Buhrmann and Justin Hobday, and Sweden’s Stephen Lindskog.

The turning point in Atwal and Yeh’s battle was the par five 15th, where Atwal, who was one behind, birdied and Yeh bogied.

Yeh hit two drives to the left of the green on 15 but duffed a chip short and then failed to get up and down. Atwal then increased his lead by birdieing the next hole, before Yeh put the title out of his reach with a bogey on the penultimate hole.

"It was the toughest round of my life. I knew it was going to be a tough today. Coming from Taiwan, Yeh, is such a great wind player, I knew he would be hard to beat," said Atwal, 27.

He added: "I wasn’t thinking about winning, I was just thinking about playing well, which is what I did last week when I was playing so well. I’ll do the same next week as well in the Johnnie Walker Classic."

Yeh was consoled by the fact that he regained the Davidoff Tour Order of Merit lead from England’s Simon Dyson, who was not playing this week.

"I’ll take that (regaining the merit list lead). It wasn’t my day," said Yeh, who won the season-opening Malaysian Open. Scotland’s Sam Torrance won the battle of the two star players after finishing a stroke ahead of Spain’s Steve Ballesteros.

They both carded 73s, with Torrance finishing two over for the tournament.

The Scot, who will captain next year’s European Ryder Cup team, finished off his round brilliantly by birdieing three out of the last four holes, including 17 and 18.

"They set the course up very hard. They were teeing us up from right off the back," said Torrance. "It was tough to keep your composure, it was so exposed out there but I really love the course. We don’t play anything like it in Europe."

Ballesteros on the other hand had a terrible finish with a triple-bogey eight on the last.

After a perfect tee shot the Spaniard was then unsettled by his playing partner (Rafael Ponce) who had to play a provisional ball.

Ballesteros backed off his second shot to compose himself but when he hit his four-iron it went way right into the bushes. He found his ball but had to take a drop.

Apart from his disappointing finish the 43-year old took some hope from the week. He said: "I played pretty good, a little bit better, apart from three or four holes."

The Star Alliance Open was Ballesteros’ final event of the year. He is going to Japan next week to look at a course he is designing there, and will then spend the rest of the year practising.
