Chance for Kaif, Sodhi to prove mettle

INDORE, Nov 7 (PTI) — All eyes will be on the two young talents — skipper Ritender Singh Sodhi and batsman Mohd Kaif -when NCA XI take on the visiting Zimbabwe side in a three-day tour opener here from tomorrow.

Some other talented youngsters including left-handers Sriram, Vinayak Mane and Ramesh Powar, would also get a chance to exhibit their skills against the Zimbabweans sans their skipper Heath Streak.

Zimbabwe will be led by vice-captain Guy Whittall as Streak will be able to join the team only on November 9.

Sodhi said the players were in a positive frame of mind and would go all out to earn a win.

“We have some exciting stroke-makers in the side like Mane, Sriram, Kaif, Gautam Gambhir and Niraj Patel and we are hoping to win the toss and bat first,” Sodhi told reporters after the nets this morning.

Kaif was flown to replace an injured Rahul Dravid during the Sharjah tournament but did not get to play a match while Sriram had a disappointing series in Sharjah and both will raring to go here.

Sodhi, one of the most talented all-rounders in the country, said both spinners Ramesh Powar of Mumbai and Sarandeep Singh of Punjab were likely to play as the Zimbabweans are not very comfortable against spin.

Ajay Ratra, who had a good time playing for the junior team will be the wicket-keeper while Mruthunjay Tripathi, Nikhi Dore and Fazal Mohammed would be in charge of the bowling department apart from the two off-spinners.

Coach Vasu Paranjpe of Mumbai said the newly laid pitch at the Nehru Stadium here looked full of runs.

“I think the team which bats first will put up a score of around 400 to 450 and the bowlers will have to bowl their hearts out to succeed on this wicket,” he added.

Chief coach Hanumant Singh said he was confident of his team doing well in this match. “We have the best young talents in the country and it should be interesting to watch them perform,” he added.

The visitors will be without Streak, who stayed back to get his tooth removed at Harare and Brain Murphy, who will join the team after appearing for his exams tomorrow. Former Australian speedster Carl Rackemann, who is coaching the Zimbabwe team, joined them today from Delhi.

Stand-in captain Whittall will be looking for runs from the two former skippers Alistair Campbell and Andy Flower. It will also be interesting to see how opening batsman Stuart Carlisle, batsmen Grant Flower, Paul Strang and Trevor Madondo cope with the spinners.

Their new ball bowlers look impressive. Young speedster Travis Friend is the man to watch. He will be backed up by Paul Strang, Henry Olonga, Gavin Rennie and Mluleki Nkala.

Teams:

National Cricket Academy XI: Rettinder Singh Sodhi (cap-Pun), Ajay Ratra (wk-Har) Vinayak Mane (Mumbai), S. Sriram (TN), Niraj Patel (Guj), Mohammed Kaif (UP), Gautam Gambhir (Raj), Ramesh Pawar (Mumbai) Sarandip Singh (Punjab), Rakesh Dhruv (Haryana), Mritunjay Tripathi (UP), Rakesh Patel (Baroda), Nikhil Doru (Orissa) and Fazal Mohammed (Kerala).

Zimbabwe: Guy Whittall, Alistair Campbell, Stuart Carlisle, Andrew Flower, Grant Flower, Travis Friend, Trevor Madondo, Douglas Marillier, Mlluleki Nkala, Henry Olonga, Gavin Rennie, Bryan Strang and Paul Strang.

Azharuddin, Jadeja “cheated nation”

CALCUTTA, Nov 7 (UNI) —Coach of the Indian cricket Anshuman Gaekwad feels that the recent CBI report and India’s debacle in the tri-nation cup final at Sharjah would not have any effect in the Bangladesh Test match.

“This team is alright. Only thing it needed is consistency,’’ he has said here yesterday.

He said, “Both in Nairobi and at Sharjah we could have better result if we were a little more cautious.”

On the ignominy of being all out in 54 runs at Sharjah, he said: “It is very difficult to believe. It’s like a nightmare’’.

Gaekwad, who would be coaching the Indian team for the last time in this match before newly appointed New Zealand coach John Wright takes over, also feels that he is pained to know that former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja had betrayed the country in the cricket matches.

Gaekwad said, “Azharuddin and Jadeja betrayed the fine game of cricket itself and cheated the whole country. They also betrayed the team. I’m indeed ashamed of them.’’

The Indian coach, who is accompanying the Indian team to Dhaka said, Gaekwad was the coach of the Indian team in the match between India and Pakistan at Jaipur in 1999 which according to the report, Mohammed Azharuddin had admitted to CBI.

Asked to comment on that match Gaekwad said, “What can I say, how do I know who is doing what off the field’’. He said how is it possible for a coach to know everything.

BCCI to summon 5 cricketers on Nov 12 ?

NEW DELHI, Nov 7 (PTI) — The cricket board is likely to summon five cricket players and the former physiotherapist, who have been named in the CBI report on betting and match fixing, to appear before it on November 12.

BCCI sources said the five cricketers were likely to appear before the board’s anti-corruption commissioner K. Madhavan in Chennai.

When contacted Mr Madhavan, however, told PTI here tonight that he would summon all the players and an official very soon in connection with the betting and match-fixing charge.

The 162-page CBI report names former skippers Mohammed Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja, former allrounder Manoj Prabhakar, wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia, prolific Delhi batsman Ajay Sharma and former physio Ali Irani.

Asked to comment on the CBI report, Mr Madhavan said “the report is reasonably good.”Top

Groundsman’s charge refuted by CBI

NEW DELHI, Nov 7 (PTI) — The CBI has denied reports that groundsman Ram Adhar alias “Chowdury” had been beaten up for a “forced confession” that he had taken Rs 50,000 as bribe to prepare a “tailor-made” pitch for a Test match between India and Australia in 1996.

A CBI spokesman said “at no point of time, the sleuths of special crime branch had adopted any third degree method or even beaten the groundsman for a confession.”

He said Adhar had come to CBI on August 8 and recorded his statement with the agency officials.

The spokesman said cricketer Ajay Sharma and bookie Mukesh Gupta had named him as the person, who was paid Rs 50,000 for a “tailor-made” pitch.

According to CBI’s 162-page report, Raighat was the venue for bribing a groundsman to prepare a tailor-made pitch as per the instruction of bookie for the 1996 Test match played at Ferozeshah Kotla ground here.Top

Ban guilty: SA media

DURBAN, Nov 7 (PTI) — The CBI report into cricket match-fixing has led to calls in South Africa that those who have tarnished the game be banished for life.

The media and members of the public have in unison said the ICC should now take the lead and clean up the game once and for all.

A Durban-based newspaper, Daily News has summed up the reactions of the people by saying “gentleman’s game” now “lies in tatters”.

In its editorial yesterday the daily said “Clearly, the immediate priority of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is to expose to full extent the cancer that has infiltrated the game and then to mercilessly banish those who have tarnished the reputation of this once-noble pursuit”

“But whether the ICC, which is frequently lampooned as a clique of gin-swilling geriatrics, has the guts or the muscle to get to the very heart of the scandal remains to be seen.

“Since the release of the CBI report, most of the players named have indignantly pleaded innocence, just as Cronje did until the pressure mounted. It is a sad reflection on the current morality in cricket that one would hardly have expected to do them otherwise.”

The newspaper said what was not acceptable was senior board officials of many countries rushing to defend their respective players “without bothering to establish the full extent to which they may, or may not, be implicated in match-fixing or any other unacceptable conduct”.

“ICC, if it wants to restore cricket’s badly tarnished reputation, must look inward, stop covering up for its members and stop pretending that the game is immune to the encroachment of greedy players and their criminal bedfellows. There is no place to hide”.Top

Bangladesh Test a new challenge: Ganguly

CALCUTTA, Nov 7 (UNI) — The inaugural Test match against Debutant Bangladesh will be a new challenge, Indian captain Saurav Ganguly feels.

Before leaving for Dhaka to play the first ever Test match against Bangladesh, Saurav said, “We are taking the match very seriously even if Bangladesh would be playing their first ever Test match. Moreover, as a captain, this would be my Test match. This is certainly different from leading a side in a one-day international. This is an entirely different feeling. I’m very hopeful of a very positive outcome,’’ the indian skipper said.

Saurav, who along with wicket-keeper Saba Karim, had a long work-out at the net for the first couple of days, said, ‘’Bangladesh has got the Test status just recently and as such they must have prepared themselves for this big event well. So we are giving all importance to this Test match. Accordingly, we are reaching dhaka three days before so that we can have a good practice at the National Stadium there and acclamatise ourselves with the local condition’’.

Saurav informed that he and all the other members of the team were well motivated for this Test match which would be a historic event for Bangladesh.

India played its last Test match against South Africa led by Hansie Cronje at Bangalore during February last.

“So, this Test match is also equally important to us as other Test matches”, he said.

The Indian team included four players — opener Shiv Sundar Das, Zaheer Khan, Yuvaraj Singh and Saba Karim — who would be making their debut in the Test match time in Dhaka.

Commenting on them, Saurav said, “All of them had found their place in the team proving their worth. While Zaher, Yuvaraj and Shiv Sundar are quite promising, Saba Karim is the best wicket-keeper at the moment’’.

All the Indian players arrived in the city last night.

Zaheer Khan, speaking about his feeling, said: “I’m very happy that I have got the chance to play the Test match. Moreover, it would be a unique experience to play along with speedstar like Javagal Srinath’’.

On the other hand, Yuvaraj Singh mentioned: “I’m very happy to get the chance for the first time. I didn’t expect that it would come so early and I’ve to make full use of the confidence entrusted on me”.

Indian vice-captain Rahul Dravid who had to come back from Sharjah midway for a finger injury said that he is fully cured now and practised at Bangalore regularly before coming here.

Sadgopan Ramesh, who had made a comeback to Indian team, was also very hopeful of doing well in this Test.Top

Finest win lost in Tiger Woods' shadow

ATLANTA, Nov 7 (AP) — The finest of his 17 career victories was barely one hour old when Phil Mickelson stared at the microphone inches from his chin, then glared at the person asking the question.

How satisfying is it to beat Tiger Woods?

Mickelson rolled his eyes and turned up his palms. “Do you want to rephrase that question?” he shot back tersely.

Winning is not enough, even four times in one year.

Mickelson’s two-stroke victory over Woods in the Tour Championship culminated his best year since turning professional in 1992. He won four times, twice beating Woods down the stretch.

He earned over $ 4.7 million and locked up second place on the money list.

He was by far the best player on the PGA Tour this year, with one exception.

“I know that Tiger had a great year,” he said. “But to have the best year other than his meant a lot to me, too.”

That’s what this year came down to — Tiger, and everyone else.

The year is not over for Woods. He will defend his title in the World Golf Championships at Valderrama along the southern coast of Spain this week, a chance to become only the fourth player in PGA Tour history to win at least 10 times in one season.

If he fails?

“If I don’t accomplish the 10 wins, then obviously that will be disappointing because I was close to doing it,” said Woods, who has finished third and second the past two weeks. “But the fact that I won three Majors in one year is not a bad thing, either.”

Nor is the fact Mickelson won “only” four times.

But more than his four victories, Mickelson likely will be remembered in 2000 for stopping two Woods streaks — beating him in the Buick Invitational to end his string of six straight victories, and beating him Sunday at East Lake Golf Club to end a streak of 19 consecutive tournaments in which Woods led after three rounds and went on to win.

He was happy to end the year on a positive note, and it didn’t get much better than the Tour Championship. One behind to start the final round, he made the turn in 31 to take a one-stroke lead and didn’t flinch over the final four holes.

The decisive stroke was an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-5 15th, a hole that Woods failed to birdie in the group behind Mickelson.

“This gives me momentum and encouragement to work hard and come back in 2001 and have another great year,” he said.

Whether that’s enough to cut into the enormous gap Woods has established over the rest of the PGA Tour remains to be seen. Mickelson said he never compares himself to Tiger and said it would take at least two years before anyone can challenge his No. 1 ranking.

Does he think he’s capable of winning 10 times a year?

“I certainly enjoy that challenge. I’m going to challenge myself to do that, yes,” Mickelson said. “I challenged myself this week to get ready and win this tournament, and I was able to do that. The last four holes, I played very well — well enough to win.

“But I’ve got to have that frame of mind for 72 holes,” he said. “If I’m able to do that, I don’t feel like my physical skills are preventing me from winning double-digits a year.”

That’s where Woods has so clearly separated himself.

Already, his nine victories are the most in one season since Sam Snead won 11 times in 1950. He has won as many tournaments the last two years — 17 — as Mickelson has won in the last 10. Even when his swing is out of sync, he is a factor on the weekend.

Woods needs only to finish at 8-over 294 this week in the American Express Championship to break the actual scoring average of 68.33 set by Byron Nelson in 1945.

That shouldn’t be such a difficult task, considering Woods has had only four rounds over par this year and none since the first week of May. His 69 on Sunday was his 11th consecutive round in the 60s, and 43rd straight at par or better.

That’s one streak on which Mickelson will have no bearing. Top

Dinesh Mongia hits triple century

JALANDHAR, Nov 7 (PTI) — Punjab batsman Dinesh Mongia, scored an unbeaten 308 runs to become the highest run scorer of the state to take his team’s first innings to 587 runs for the loss of five wickets on the third day of Ranji Trophy league match at local Burlton Park here today.

Punjab declared the innings.

Punjab took a lead of 419 runs over Jammu and Kashmir who once again crumbled against the spin attack of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and were at 118 runs for the loss of three wickets in 43 overs.

Earlier, Dinesh Mongia had virtually crushed the Jammu and Kashmir bowling attack and completed his first triple century with 15 boundaries and five sixes and had broken the previous highest run scorer record for Punjab of Pankaj Dharmani who had scored 305 runs against Jammu and Kashmir last year.

Pankaj Dharmani was the first to go after scoring 176 runs when Kanwaljeet Singh took a superb catch at second slip off the bowling of medium pacer Surinder Singh.

Harvinder Jugnu followed suit and was caught at point by D. Mahajan on the bowling of Shashi.

Jugnu scored only eight runs in his 36 minutes stay on the crease.

But the 133-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Dinesh Mongia and Sandeep Sawal made things worse for the opponents.

Sandeep Sawal scored 50 runs of just 56 balls with three boundaries and one six.
