Durand Cup
TFA shock SBT to enter last eight

NEW DELHI, Oct 31 (UNI) — Displaying sheer grit and inflexible fortitude Tata Football Academy (TFA) scored a hard-fought victory over State Bank of Travancore (SBT), 2-1, in the knock-out match to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup at the Ambedkar Stadium here this afternoon.

It was a do-or-die match for both the teams and they went into the offensive from the word go and began making forays into each other’s territory.

Playing in a 4-4-3 combination TFA launched a series of attacks on the opposition and a couple of times were successful in dodging their way to the penalty box area, but SBT defenders negated these attempts with ease.

TFA fired the first salvo in the 27th minute when outside-left Akbar Singh intercepted a SBT pass and lobbed it to right half Malsum Thunga who again passed it to advancing centre forward Subhash Chakraborty inside the penalty box and Chakraborty very adroitly placed the ball into the goal to make the score 1-0.

This goal galvanised SBT into action and the team began playing through long passes to draw optimum advantage of their height.

The equaliser came in the 35th minute when SBT right back Jiju Jacob gave a long pass to outside left Asif Saheer. Saheer on sensing that he was being pursued, lobbed the ball over the head of a TFA defender to centre forward V.P. Shaji inside the rival penalty box whose powerful swerving right-footer hit the net to make the score 1-1.

After the lemon-break, TFA lads were seen quickly shuffling their position and sharpening their man-marking. However, they were way ahead over their rivals in their agility and speed. By shuffling their positions quickly, they could baffle SBT on some occasions.

The final salvo of the match was fired by TFA in the 80th minute when Thunga intercepted a long pass of the SBT and passed to Akbar who was outside the rival penalty box. Akbar swiftly lobbed the ball to Thunga whose left-footer hit the net to make it 2-1.

SBT made two substitutions in the match in the second half which did not pay dividends. In the last five minutes of the match SBT did get a couple of opportunities but failed to score.

The lads from Jamshedpur now face defending champions Salgaocar on November 2.

The lads from Travncore did give their best but were unfortunate. Shaji in particular was spectacular with his accurate long passes and more or less played the role of a game-maker.

The quarterfinals begin tomorrow. There will be two matches. The first match between Zee Churchill Brothers (Goa) and JCT Mills (Phagwara) will kick off at 1 p.m. while the second match between Kingfisher East Bengal Club of Calcutta and Muktijoddha of Bangladesh will kick off at 3 p.m.

India winning purely on talent: Marsh

MUMBAI, Oct 31 (UNI) — Geoff Marsh, a strong candidate for the Indian coach post, is confident of making Indian cricketers as strong as a nail. “Lack of it may be the reason letting them down like it happened in Sharjah on Sunday’’, the burly Australian said here today.

Marsh arrived yesterday and was preparing to leave for the interview when some media persons caught up with him to find out why he changed his mind after withdrawing from race he was in along with Greg Chappell and John Wright.

Marsh, probably one of the very few shy Australians, said Indian cricketers are winning purely on talent which can not make them consistent. The Australians and South Africans are coached to be very tough on the field and that will be one of his main concerns if he gets the assignment, he added. He also said that there should be a right balance of fitness in gym and also on the field for which some method and science is needed.

Action will be taken against “erring players”

TIRUCHIRAPPALLY, Oct 31 (PTI) — The Sports Ministry would take suitable action after it received reports from the respective sports bodies in the country on selection of teams/athletes to the recently held Sydney Olympics, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Pon Radhakrishnan said today.

“The ministry has sought detailed reports and action will be taken as soon as the reports reached the Sports Ministry,” Radhakrishnan told reporters here today.

On the issue of weight-lifter Kunjrani Devi, who was not selected, he said it was not the only case, and added that a lot more complaints had been received.

He said his ministry would strive hard to “avoid politics within sports bodies” and see to it that Indian sports was free from political interference.

On the CBI report on cricket match-fixing, which has named four Indian cricketers, he said “action will be taken against the erring players.”

He said a national sports academy on the lines of the National Institute of Sports in Patiala would be set up in South India.

Board indifference ‘raises suspicion’

NEW DELHI, Oct 31 (PTI) — Raising suspicions over the role of Indian cricket board in the match-fixing scandal, the CBI in its report said the BCCI had shown resolute indifference to probe even matches, results of which were patently questionable.

“Although there is no concrete evidence to suggest the direct involvement of any of the members of the BCCI in match-fixing, their resolute indifference does give rise to suspicions that there was perhaps more than what meets the eye,” the investigating agency said in its report submitted to Sports Minister S.S. Dhindsa yesterday.

CBI said it was the elementary duty of the BCCI, which has been the single biggest beneficiary of the enormous commercial success of the sport, to keep a close watch on the performance of the team and to thoroughly investigate the slightest gossip, leave alone suspicion, of any malpractice.

“The BCCI, however, did not care to even investigate allegations which were bound to have been within their knowledge. “It defies credulity to believe that the apex body did not find the need to investigate thoroughly the results of matches which are patently questionable.”

I am innocent, says Jadeja

JAMMU, Oct 31 (PTI) — Cricketer Ajay Jadeja tonight expressed ignorance about his name being mentioned in the CBI report on match-fixing and said he was totally innocent.

“Whatever I’ve come to know is from the media only. I am innocent,” Jadeja said here.

Jadeja is one of the players named by CBI, in its report submitted to Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, in connection with match-fixing.

Jadeja denied he had ever been questioned by CBI or been asked to appear before it. “(However) if CBI asks, I’ll not hesitate to appear before it.

“If any charge is proved against me, I will respect law as I am a law-abiding citizen,” Jadeja said.

Jadeja, who was dropped from the team for the recent series in Kenya and Sharjah, however, said the cricket board had not put a ban on his playing.

“I was dropped because of my poor performance and when I improve my performance I will be back in the team,” he said. Jadeja criticised the media for sensationalising the whole issue.

HYDERABAD: Former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin remained incommunicado today after he was named in the CBI report on match- fixing scandal which shook the cricketing world.

His younger brother Abrar said Azhar was not willing to make any statement or comment at this stage. “I have spoken to him and he expressed his unwillingness to make any statement at this stage,” Abrar told PTI.

The Hyderabadi batsman remained out of bounds for media personnel who gathered at his Banjara Hills residence for his reaction. Earlier in the day, Azhar visited his ailing mother at a private hospital here.

Reached in Baroda tonight for his comment, Mongia said he had not seen or read the CBI report. “Therefore, I have no comments,” he said.

The Indian team’s former physiotherapist Dr Ali Irani has been named by CBI as having “acted as a conduit for receiving payments on behalf of Azharuddin from M.K. and Associates.” Azharuddin also paid him money on each occasion that he received payments on his behalf, the report said.

Irani, who was also with the team for several years, could not be reached for his comments on CBI’s allegations.

Redgrave announces retirement

LONDON, Oct 31 (AFP) — Britain’s top Olympian Steve Redgrave, who won five Olympic rowing gold medals, announced today that he would retire from competition.

The 38-year-old, who won his fifth gold medal in the men’s coxless fours in Sydney in September, has been in the sport for 20 years.

‘‘I’m not carrying on,’’ he told BBC radio ahead of a Press conference here. ‘‘I didn’t want to make an announcement at the Olympics.’’

Redgrave won his medals at Los Angeles in 1994, Seoul in 1988, Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney last month. He was the first Olympian to win gold at five successive games in an endurance sport. Only Aladar Gerevich, with six successive golds in the Hungarian sabre team at the beginning of the last century, has achieved more.

Redgrave had announced his retirement in 1996 after winning his fourth crown in Atlanta, famously saying: ‘‘I hereby give permission to anybody who catches me in a boat again to shoot me.’’

Eriksson to be England coach?

ROME, Oct 31 (AFP) — Lazio’s Swedish coach Sven Goran Eriksson has agreed to become the new coach to the England national side, Italian news agency ANSA reported today.

Eriksson, the agency reported, agreed a deal with the English Football Association (FA) yesterday and will take the helm on July 1, 2001 after his contract with the Italian first division side expires at the end of the season with the blessing of the club, the reigning Italian champions.

The Swede, speaking by telephone, would not confirm or deny the reports, saying he was obeying his club’s current policy of not speaking to the Press except at mandatory conferences for Champions League games.

“I am not saying anything, I am not speaking to the Press,” said Eriksson.

But ANSA said the meeting took place yesterday at the Formello training complex after Lazio’s new signing Dino Baggio was presented to the Press.

Eriksson began to take a training session and was then called over by club vice-president Dino Zoff and director general Massimo Cragnotti, son of Lazio president Sergio.

He was then led to a room for a meeting with the FA delegation and Sergio Cragnotti and a deal was swiftly concluded.

If confirmed, Eriksson would be the first foreigner to coach the England side, taking over at a time when the fortunes of the national side are at a low ebb.

The 52-year-old cut his coaching teeth in his homeland with Degherfors and Gothenburg before taking his first foreign posting as manager with Portuguese giants Benfica.

In 1984-85 he became coach to AS Roma — his first job in Italy’s Serie A — before spending two years at Fiorentina and then returning to Benfica.

He then had a long stint at Sampdoria before taking his current post at Lazio in 1997-8.

In May he finally won the Italian title for Lazio — only the second in their history and their first for 26 years.

The Swede would replace Kevin Keegan, who quit after England lost their World Cup 2002 qualifier 1-0 to Germany at Wembley Stadium.

Since then Howard Wilkinson stood in for the World Cup qualifier with Finland in Helsinki while Leicester City boss Peter Taylor, assisted by Manchester United assistant manager Steve Mcclaren, is scheduled to lead England in their friendly against Italy in Turin next month.

Eriksson’s reported agreement has come after a host of names such as France’s World Cup winning coach Aime Jacquet and Arsenal’s French manager Arsene Wenger have ruled themselves out of contention for a job regarded by many as a poisoned chalice.

Defeat not disgraceful: Hussain

RAWALPINDI, Oct 31 (AFP) — England Captain Nasser Hussain has said his side’s 2-1 defeat against Pakistan in the one-day series was not a disgrace and would help the tourists focus on the task ahead in the upcoming Test series.

“If anything this loss is going to strengthen our thoughts of what we need to do,” in the remaining part of the tour, Hussain told reporters yesterday.

“The defeat is not disgraceful,” he added.

England suffered an eight-wicket defeat in the final one-dayer, losing the series by 2-1.

England lost both the one-dayers due to their vulnerability against spin bowling but their real challenge starts next month when they face the home team in three Tests.

“Its hard work against spinners but we are learning,” the England skipper added.

England were restricted to 211-9 in the second match in Lahore and 158 in the third match here yesterday.

England won the first match in Karachi by five wickets, successfully chasing 305 run target.

“We were bowled out in 42 overs or so which never gave us any chance, obviously the wicket spun and Saqlain bowled well,” Hussain said.

“We will have to show character and fire. We showed it with the ball here and with the bat in the first game but we have got to put things together,” he said.

Hussain said crowd violence outside the stadium and insects flying in the lights did not affect the team’s performance.

“That’s how cricket is played in this part of the world. We knew its going to be different.”

Hussain refused to comment on his dubious leg before dismissal: “I repeat I will not comment on umpiring decisions on this whole tour and you guys saw replays you write what you have seen,” he said.

England captain was adjudged leg before wicket by umpire Mohammad Aslam off Wasim Akram’s delivery but replays showed the ball was missing leg stump.

Pakistan captain Moin Khan said the victory would boost his team’s morale before the Test series.

“The confidence of the team is high and we will win the Test series as well,” Khan said.

Khan said Pakistan would not rely only on spinners.

“We have an experienced attack and its not right that we will totally rely on spinners,” he said.

England play two side games before taking on Pakistan in first of the three Tests in Lahore from November 15.

Orissa celebrates Das’s selection

BHUBANESWAR, Oct 31 (IANS) — Cricket crazy residents of Orissa are jubilant over the selection of 23-year-old opening batsman Shiv Sunder Das in the Indian cricket team to play the one-off Test match against Bangladesh at Dhaka from November 10 to 14.

Soon after news of the Orissa youngster’s selection spread, his house at plot no 2569, Tankapani Road, on the outskirts of this city was teeming with well-wishers and cricket fans. Das is the second Orissa player after medium-pacer Debasis Mohanty to win an India cap.

‘‘I felt extremely happy when I was informed about the selection,” Das told IANS. He has recently returned from Australia after a one-and-a-half month stint at the National Cricket Academy there. “It is a precious moment. The people’s blessings and support has made me more determined now,’’ he said. ‘‘We are all proud because Shiv is a class player. He should have been selected for India long ago,’’ Mr Pankaj Patnaik, secretary of Shahid Sporting Club, said. Mohanty is a member of this club.

Das scored an impressive 660 runs in the 1999-2000 Ranji national championship season and hit an undefeated 131 against West Zone in a Duleep Trophy tie. He was a member of the Rest of India team that plays the traditional season opener against the previous year’s national champions. Das was also part of the India A team that toured Los Angeles last year to play a five-match series against Australia A.

‘‘We have seen him play here and hope that he will prove to be a quality opening batsman in Test cricket,” said Jagadananda, a student of Ekamra College, Bhubaneswar.

‘‘We are very happy that we have two international cricketers from our state,’’ said Atanu Sabyasachi, a cricket fan. ‘‘We are proud of both Shiv and Debasis,’’ he added.

‘‘Budha (Das’ nickname) has been picked for the Indian team by the grace of Lord Jagannath,’’ said Mrs Kanchanbala Das, the player’s mother. His father, Mr Uttam Das, a retired schoolteacher, also expressed happiness at his son’s selection.

‘‘Shiv is dedicated, disciplined and very hard working. I am confident that he will do well in the one-off Test against Bangladesh,’’ his coach Kishor Mania said.
