India beat Zimbabwe by 13 runs

SHARJAH, Oct 22 (PTI) — In a nail-biting finish, India choked Zimbabwe in the final overs and beat them by 13 runs here tonight after brilliant bowling by the new find Zaheer Khan.

Zimbabwe were to make 20 runs in the final over to beat India’s score of 265 for eight but they ended at 252 for six, although they had four wickets in hand. This was India’s first win in the Coca-Cola triangular one-day series.

For once, India’s tail wagged, adding 81 runs in the last 10 overs to enable the side to notch its highest total in the tournament.

Then man-of-the-match Zaheer Khan played a crucial role in Zimbabwe’s failure to attain the target by taking three wickets for 37 runs in his 10 overs.

Earlier, the famed Indian batting line-up failed but an unusual late surge by the tailenders more than made up for it by helping India post 265 for eight in their allotted 50 overs.

With the sole exception of Rahul Dravid, who came as an opener today after India were put in to bat by Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak, none of the top order batsmen shone and got out just when they were beginning to settle down.

Dravid, who laboured hard to score 85 off 121 ball, held the Indian innings together and was involved in five promising partnerships, none of which, however, could materialise in a big stand.

Wickets fell at regular intervals for India and runs were hard to come by. But just when they looked to be settling for 230-240 runs, an surprise charge by the tailenders realised 60 runs in the last six overs to reach a respectable 265. Wicket-keeper Vijay Dahiya (32), Sunil Joshi (19), Ajit Agarkar (12 not out) all contributed useful runs at the end and scored at more than a run a ball to compensate for the top-order failure.

Earlier, Dravid was promoted as an opener to let Saurav Ganguly provide the much-needed solidity in the middle order. But India were in for an early setback as Sachin Tendulkar (8) got out cheaply edging a simple catch to Andy Flower behind the wickets off the bowling of Streak.

All the other batsmen got in the double figures and looked set but none of them remained at the wicket to consolidate with Dravid.

Kambli let go another oppotunity of securing a permanent berth in the team when his mistimed hook off Friend landed in the safe hands of Dirk Viljoen at square leg after he made a good-looking 18 that had two fours.

Ganguly was also out for an identical score, when trying to flick down the leg side, managed only a thin edge to leave Andy Flower to complete a brilliant catch.

The second and third wicket stands realised 30 and 42 runs respectively.

Dravid, meanwhile, continued with his patient knock and reached his fifty off 74 balls. Yuvraj Singh gave him good support as the two added 54 runs for the fourth wicket, which was also the highest stand of the innings.

One-dayers harming cricket: Vengsarkar

SHARJAH, Oct 22 (UNI) — Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar feels one-dayers have ruined the art of cricket and has a telling effect on the youngsters who fail to develop the technique and temperament for the game.

“The skill and temperament to play long innings is fading among the youngsters. They just come out and bang the ball without bothering to learn the basics and hone their skill,” Vengsarkar told “Gulf News”.

“It (one-day cricket) is bad for the future of the game,” said Vengsarkar who played 116 Tests and 129 one-dayers for India. India’s newfound sensation Yuvraj Singh is a product of elf Cricket Academy in Mumbai which was set up by Vengsarkar after his retirement from the game.

Indian seamer Ajit Agarkar is also from the Academy. Yuvraj had been to the Academy in 1997 as a 16-year-old. Vengsarkar said: “I have been concentrating on the boys under-14. They are the ones who need grooming so that by the time they reach the age of 16 or 19 they could be absorbed by the state associations.”

Five of the academy boys recently played in the Irani Trophy between Ranji Trophy Champions and Rest of India which marks the beginning of the cricketing season in India. “Opener Vinayak Ramesh Mane, all-rounder Ramesh Pawar, and seamer Swapnel Prakash Hazare are all talented,” the score of 6868 with 17 centuries in Test cricket said.

He felt Mumbai which produced a galaxy of top cricketers till recently was now having a dearth of “extraordinary talent’’. “We cannot look at anyone and say, like we did a few years back about Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, that they will play for India in future,” he said.

Vengsarkar attributes the paucity of talent to the shorter version of the game. “The famous Harris Shield school tournament in Mumbai has been converted into a one-day tournament.”

The lack of good bowlers, he said, is also due to one-day cricket. “Nobody is willing to experiment. Spinners are refusing to give flight to the ball. Everyone wants to bowl tight.”

Venus, Davenport in title clash

LINZ, Oct 22 (AFP) — American power-hitters Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams set up an intriguing final to the $ 535,000 WTA Tournament yesterday when both cruised through their semi-finals.

The top-seeded Davenport needed only 49 minutes to dispose of unseeded Czech Kveta Hrdlickova 6-1 6-1 to advance to her 11th final of the year. Williams, seeded second, continued to look unstoppable as she defeated fifth seed and 1997 champion Chanda Rubin 6-4 6-0 to extend her winning streak to 35 matches.

Not only will Davenport attempt to snap Williams’ unbeaten streak today, she will look to snap her recent drought in WTA tour finals.

Davenport dropped three straight finals to Williams during the summer, including the Wimbledon and US Open finals, and has gone 0-6 overall in championship matches since her last tournament win at Indian Wells in March.

Included in her finals drought was a three-set loss to top-ranked Martina Hingis at last week’s Zurich tournament. The 24-year-old Davenport has gone 6-1 overall since returning from a right foot injury which forced her out of the Olympics. She has not dropped a set this week and will seek her 29th career singles title today.

Three weeks ago in Sydney, Williams became the first woman to win both the singles and doubles titles at the same Olympics since the legendary Helen Wills in 1924.

She has not lost a match since falling to Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario at the French Open quarterfinals in early June, collecting six titles along the way.

Lewis thinks Tyson will fight again

AUBURN HILLS (Michigan), Oct 22 (AP) — Before the fight, Mike Tyson said this would be his last one.

After Andrew Golota quit Friday night, Tyson said nothing angrily leaving the ring and quickly leaving the arena.

“I think they’ll talk him into it,” heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis said during a conference call about nine hours after the fight. “If Mike Tyson fights again, I hope he waits for me. I have something to feed him.”

After Tyson beat Lou Savarese in his previous fight, Tyson said he wanted to rip out Lewis’ heart and feed it to him. He also wanted to eat Lewis’ children.

A couple of days before the Golota fight, Tyson said he knew Lewis doesn’t have children.

Golota wanted to quit after the first round, and he did quit after the second — on his feet as Tyson cursed him while being restrained from dashing across the ring. A crowd of 16,228 jeered lustily and later showered Golota with popcorn, soda and beer.

Andrew Golota admitted to hospital

NEW YORK, Oct 22 (Reuters) — Andrew Golota’s wife told his promoters that her husband was in intensive care in a Chicago hospital for a possible brain concussion after he quit his bout against Mike Tyson early morning.

But the hospital said last evening that no one named Golota had been admitted.

Kathy Duva, the head of Main Events, Golota’s promoter, said she had been told by other members of Golota’s family that the boxer was in the hospital. Duva said Golota’s wife, Mariola, told a Main Events representative earlier yesterday that her husband had been admitted.

Duva speculated that Golota was not listed as a patient because of a delay in reporting the information within the hospital.

The promoter said Golota went to the hospital because he “was feeling nauseous and dizzy and also had all kinds of head pain. He went to the hospital this morning.”

Kasparov faces dangerous threat

LONDON, Oct 22 (AP) — Chess superstar Gary Kasparov frowned, shook his head and muttered under his breath.

The 37-year-old Russian, famed for his intimidating stare, his arrogance over the chessboard and the psychological pressure he exerts on opponents, looked astonished - but at his own blunders, not his challenger’s.

Kasparov has ruled the chess world for 15 years, surviving five previous challenges. But the man who once declared chess a violent sport where players “are plotting to crush one another” and destroy their opponent’s ego is trailing nearly midway through the 2000 World Chess Championship.

Kirti alleges forex scam by IOA
From M.S.Unnikrishnan

NEW DELHI, Oct 22 — Former Test cricketer and BJP member of Parliament Kirti Azad alleged here today that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had committed a “Rs 1.5 crore foreign exchange scam” during the Sydney Olympic Games and demanded a “CBI probe” to fix responsibility and punish the guilty.

Kirti Azad, exposing the “sinister designs of senior officials of the IOA”, said a few days before the departure of the Indian contingent for the Sydney Olympic Games, the athletes were asked to sign travellers cheques (TCs) worth $ 4000 to 5000, using their full quota of foreign exchange, and corresponding entries were made in each passport by the issuing travel agent, and as a proof of this “scam,” he also produced photocopies of the dollar entries made in the passports of thrower Shakti Singh and middle distance runner Rosa Kutty, both of Railways.

Kirti disclosed that “though the athletes signed for $ 4000-5000 what they actually received was only $ 770 (Aust.$ 1380 per head).”

“The athletes signed for an amount of Rs 1.5 crore in all, but in hand, they actually received not more than Rs 25 lakh. I wonder whether the IOA would let us know what exactly they did with the quick Rs 1.25 crore that was made on the trip Down Under”, asked Kirti, who claimed that he was coming out with these facts as a concerned sportsman, “and as the only international in both the Houses of Parliament”, and not as a politician.

Yet, the political implication is all too evident, and the presence of Shakti Singh, who hails from Bhiwani, cemented the belief that Kirti was speaking on behalf of some of the ruling party politicians, who have set their sights on the top posts in the IOA, for which elections will be held on November 3 in Delhi.

Incumbent president Suresh Kalmadi and secretary-general Randhir Singh belong to the Congress camp. Kalmadi is also a Rajya Sabha MP. But with the ruling BJP-led Central Government having a control over the votes of the Services Sports Control Board and the Railway Sports Control Board, and being in a position to influence a lot many other votes, they don’t want to let go the opportunity to ascend the IOA throne.

There are clear indications that Haryana Olympic Association president Abhay Singh Chautala may throw his hat into the ring to force a contest for the top posts, particularly for that of the president, as Mr Randhir Singh seems to be in an unassailable position. It will be very difficult to dethrone Randhir from his post who has consolidated his position in the IOA over the years, but Mr Kalmadi may find the going tough, if Mr Abhay Singh enters the fray. That even former sprint queen P T Usha has “endorsed” Kirti Azad’s views sheds some light into the polemics in the IOA politics.

Kirti said “the IOA has duped a contingent of about 70 athletes to Sydney 2000 to further their own interests as the athletes were used by the IOA as foreign exchange carriers”.

Kirti said the immediate implications of “this great fraud” were that the demoralised, shattered athletes performed below par, and “so much so that some of them failed to come anywhere close to their own personal best as the fraud by the IOA gave them sleepless nights”.

“Afterall, they were made to sign TCs which were about 5-6 times more than the amounts they actually received. Unwittingly, they have become sacrificial lambs”, Kirti pointed out.

Shakti Singh, who was also present, said he did not realise the implications of signing the TCs when he did it, and only when it was pointed out to him by Railway secretary N R Choudhary that he would not be able to participate in the World Railway Games in Moscow if it were held before March 11, 2001 as he had exhausted his quota of foreign exchange for this financial year, that he realised the seriousness of the whole thing”.

However, chef-de-mission of the Indian contingent A K Mattoo denied the allegations made by Kirti Azad, terming it as “baseless and false”. “It is unfortunate that the same has been made without checking the facts. It is also sad that one of the athletes has been drawn into the controversy”, he said.

Mark Waugh slams unbeaten ton

SYDNEY, Oct 22 (Reuters) — Mark Waugh stormed back to form with an unbeaten 108 to lead New South Wales to victory over Queensland in their domestic series one-day match today.

It was a rare appearance by the Waugh brothers at their club ground in Bankstown which has a grandstand named after them. Steve Waugh, the Australian captain, made 49, sharing a 94-run partnership for the third wicket with his twin.

“I think it’s my second hundred here in my career so it’s a nice time to bring it up,’’ Mark Waugh told Channel Nine.

He has been enduring a lean spell in one-day internationals, making a total of only 98 runs in his last nine innings, and his recent form in Test cricket has also been moderate.

Bid to exclude kabbadi from Asiad foiled

VIJAYAWADA, Oct 23 (UNI) — India has successfully thwarted attempts to exclude in the coming Asian Games in South Korea the game of kabbadi in which the country has won gold medals in the Asian Games at Beijing (1990), Hiroshima (1994) and Bangkok (1998).

Disclosing this to UNI here today yesterday Amateur Kabbadi Federation of India (AKFI) joint-secretary K. Jagadeshwar Yadav said initially, Sourth Korea had not selected kabbadi. Thanks to the relentless efforts of Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi and AKFI president J.S. Gehlot, the Asian Olympic Council persuaded South Korea to include the game in the coming Asian Games.

Kabbadi being played by more than 20 countries, including Japan, would be included as a demonstration sport in the Afro-Asian Games to be held at New Delhi in November 2001, he added.

In Sri Lanka, the game was the most popular one after cricket and even played in indoor stadiums, he added.

India should emulate Japan, which was popularising it martial arts taekwondo and judo, by giving free kits and sending coaches to other countries to train players, in order to popularise kabbadi, the cheapest of all games, and ensure its inclusion in the Olympics to improve the country’s medal tally, Mr Yadav suggested.

Jarnail Singh cremated with state honours
From Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

PANAM (Garhshankar), Oct 22 — The mortal remains of legendary footballer Jarnail Singh Dhillon, who died in Vancouver, Canada on October 14, were consigned to flames with full state honours here today.

As the bugler sounded the last post, a contingent of Punjab Police comprising one NGO, two Head Constables and eight constables, reversed arms before presenting a 11-gun salute as a mark of respect to the former Olympian, who became a household name in the sixties. Harshmohan, a son of the deceased, accompanied by his sisters Kulwinder, Jaswinder and Narinder besides other relatives lit the funeral pyre after village gurdwara granthi Jaswant Singh performed ‘ardas’. The body of Jarnail Singh, which was flown from Canada yesterday, was brought here last night via Chandigarh. It was placed in a coffin which was taken on a flower-decked vehicle from his ancestral house in the village to the cremation site. The funeral procession was led by five cops on horseback followed by a Punjab Police band in slow march. A two-feet high platform was specially constructed in the fields owned by the former soccer hero. The land, incidentally was bought by Jarnail Singh with his hard-earned money during his stint with Mohun Bagan in the early sixties.

Earlier, bowing before public sentiments, the family of the deceased allowed the body to be taken to the grounds of Khalsa College, Mahilpur, which served as a launching pad for Jarnail before he burst on to the national scene in 1957. Wreaths were placed on the body on behalf of the Principal, students and the management.

The Punjab Government was represented by Mr Sohan Singh Thindal, Minister of State for Food and Supplies, the Hoshiarpur district administration by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, and the SSP, Mr RP Mittal, besides other officials. Among the huge gathering of mourners were former Olympians DS Garcha and Kuldip Singh, Arjuna Award winners Inder Singh, and Gurdev Singh, Dronacharya awardee Desh Prem Azad, senior football coach R K Bhanot, former internationals G S Parmar, Deepak Kumar, and Amarjit Bhatia,’footballer of the decade’ Parminder Singh, national coach Sukhwinder Singh (all from JCT Phagwara) and former international Jagir Singh and Prof Sital Singh from Guru Nanak College Phagwara. Wreaths were also placed on the body by the ADGP, PAP, Mr MS Bhullar, the Regional Director of Sports Authority of India, Dr PC Kashyap, while the District Sports Officer, Jalandhar, represented the Director Sports, Col Raminder Singh. The secretary of the Punjab Handball Association, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, and the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal,North America, Mr Narinder Pal Singh, and industrialist Hardev Singh Kahma also offered floral tributes to the departed soul. Mr Surinder Bhambri placed a wreath on behalf of Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, president of the All-India Football Federation.

Jarnail Singh is survived by five daughters— Kulwinder Kaur, Jaswinder Kaur, Narinder Kaur, Manjinder Kaur, and Daljit Kaur— and son Harshmohan who has settled in Canada. The elder son, Jagmohan, who also was an international having represented India in the 1989 SAF Games at Lahore, died in 1996.Two daughters, Manjinder and Daljit are in Canada and the USA respectively.

Mr Balbir Singh Changiara, who resides in Surrey, Canada, said he was with Jarnail Singh on October 11. “In fact we had honoured him and Raghubir Singh at a function in Canada only recently. I was shocked to know about his death,” he said.

As the funeral procession wound its way through the narrow village streets of Panam, curious children and women folk, looking a bit surprised joined the stream of mourners. Baljit and Jasvir, who had come from a nearby village said they had only witnessed state funerals on TV. This is the first time that we are seeing this in our village, they said. Raju, a labourer, was surprised to see a police band leading the funeral procession.”Perhaps Jarnail Singh deserved this kind of honour,’’ he said.
