Nairobi
squad for Sharjah tourney MUMBAI, Oct 9 (PTI) — The national cricket selectors today turned down a request for an off-spinner and retained the same 14-member Indian team, which is now in Nairobi, for the October 20 to 29 triangular series in Sharjah. The five-member selection committee, including newcomer Sanjay Jagdale, also named Hyderabad’s V.V.S. Laxman as skipper of the Rest of India team in the Irani Cup match against Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai to be played here from October 13 to 17. Cricket board secretary Jaywant Lele, after announcing the two teams, said there was a request for including an off-spinner in the Sharjah squad from the team management which is taking part in the ICC Knockout Cup tournament. “The selectors held discussions over the request before deciding to retain the same 14 for Sharjah”, Lele told reporters. The teams: For Sharjah: Saurav Ganguly (capt), Sachin Tendulkar, S. Sriram, Rahul Dravid (vice-capt), Vinod Kambli, Yuvraj Singh, Robin Singh, Vijay Dahiya (wk), Ajit Agarkar, Anil Kumble, Venkatesh Prasad, Zaheer Khan, Sunil Joshi and Hemang Badani. For Irani Cup: V.V.S. Laxman (capt, Hyderabad), S. Ramesh (TN), Shib Sunder Das (Orissa), Mohd Kaif (UP), Jacob Martin (Baroda), Abhijit Kale (Maharashtra), Virender Sehwag (Delhi), Ajay Ratra (wk, Haryana), Murali Karthik (Railways), Javagal Srinath (Karnataka), Ashish Nehra (Delhi), Laxmi Ratan Shukla (Bengal), Sarandip Singh and Reetinder Singh Sodhi (both Punjab). According to reports from Nairobi, a team management source had indicated that Karnataka’s Vijay Bharadwaj, who was the Man of the Series in the last tournament in which India played in Kenya, would get the nod for the off-spinner’s spot. But the bespectacled Karnataka all-rounder did not even get a look-in in the Rest of India team against Mumbai in the Irani Cup. Queried on Bharadwaj’s exclusion selection committee chairman Chandu Borde said: “He has not played much last season because of injuries. We did not get much opportunity to watch him in action”. The reason for the Indian team management’s request for an off-spinner was because of the number of left handers in the Sri Lankan and Zimbabwe squads who are the other two teams in the fray in the Sharjah tri-series. But the selectors obviously did not want to make any changes in the Nairobi squad which has exceeded all expectations by laying low World Cup champions Australia while marching into the semi-finals. The Sharjah schedule is: Oct 20: India v Sri Lanka Oct 21: Zimbabwe v Sri Lanka Oct 22: Zimbabwe v India Oct 23 and 24: Rest days Oct 25: Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe Oct 26: India v Zimbabwe Oct 27: India v Sri Lanka Oct 28: Rest day Oct 29: Final. About the inclusion of ace speedster Srinath in the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup, Borde said the Karnataka bowler was “definitely not on trial”. “We thought that a five-day match like the Irani Cup tie would help Srinath to get into his groove after his lengthy absence from cricket. It would be beneficial for him”, the selection committee chairman said. Srinath had opted out of the tours to Kenya and Sharjah. The selectors’ decision to include Punjab’s Sarandip Singh instead of his more experienced teammate Harbhajan Singh for the off-spinner’s slot in the Rest squad gives an indication that the latter has not risen upto their expectations in the number of chances he got last season. The decision to include Railways left-arm spinner Murali Karthik, who too has played in a couple of Tests before losing his place, is another clear-cut indication that the board has forgiven the Delhi-based player for his “indiscipline” at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) last season. “We also discussed Karnataka’s Dodda Ganesh and Tamil Nadu’s S. Mahesh for the medium-pacer’s slot. They will get their chances during the three-day tour matches against Zimbabwe (in November)”, Borde said. Asked whether the inclusion of Delhi left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra, was influenced by the success tasted in Nairobi by another bowler of his ilk, Zaheer Khan, Borde said: “A left-arm bowler gives variety to the bowling and Zaheer bowled very well”. Nehra made his debut in the Asian Test series against Sri Lanka at Colombo early last year before being banished by the selectors. |
64-run victory for Kiwis NAIROBI, Oct 9 (UNI) — New Zealand scored a comprehensive 64 run win over Zimbabwe to enter the semifinals of the $ 1 million ICC Knock-out Trophy at the Nairobi Gymkhana Club grounds here this afternoon. Chasing New Zealand’s 265 for seven wickets, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 201 in 42.2 overs. After being asked to bat by Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak this morning, New Zealand were boosted by half centuries from man-of-the-match Roger Twose (85) and Craig McMillian as they posted an impressive total, leaving Zimbabwe a chase of 5.32 from their available 50 overs. Paul Wiseman took four wickets in the Zimbabwe innings to return the best bowling figures in the tournament so far as the southern Africans crashed out of contention. The result put New Zealand into the first semifinal of the ICC trophy, where they meet Pakistan in two days time. Left-arm spinner Dirk Viljoen bowled well late in the New Zealand innings to remove Twose and McMillan in quick succession, both taken on the boundary by Henry Olonga, who had earlier removed openers Craig Spearman (20) and Nathan Astle (0) by the 13th over. A late burst by Adam Parore 20 (not out) also provided a surge during which he hoisted Olonga for two sixes in a last over that went for 19 runs, including five wides. Had it not been for the Twose-McMillan partnership, the Kiwis would have been in dire straits after Heath Streak won the toss and opted to field. Olonga removed Astle when the batsman played into the covers where Grant Flower picked off the chance and then removed Spearman who was caught by Streak at mid-off. When Stephen Fleming was run out for 34 (50 balls, five 4s), New Zealand had lost their top three batsmen by the 17th over with just 69 runs on the board. Chris Cairns (11, 24 balls, one 4) put on 51 runs for the fourth wicket with Twose to launch the recovery but it was the next association that really gave the Kiwi’s total some substance SCOREBOARD: New Zealand: Spearman c Streak b Olonga 20 Astle c G. Abhinav for World Cup 2000 CHANDIGARH, Oct 9 — Chandigarh’s Olympian Abhinav Bindra, who finished a very creditable joint eleventh in the 10-metre air rifle event in the Sydney Olympics, has been selected to take part in the World Cup Final 2000 to be held in Munich in November this year. For this event just eight shooters are invited from all over the world. Besides these shooters the medal winners in the Sydney Olympic Games have also been invited to take part. Heading the list of qualifiers is Yalin Cai of China, winner of the gold medal in Sydney, followed by Artern Khadjibekov and Eugeni Aleinikov, both of Russia, winners of the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Initially, Abhinav was hoping to get an entry for the Munich World Cup 2000 on the basis of withdrawals but he has qualified directly mainly due to his wonderful performances in the World Cups at Munich and the Czech Republic prior to the Olympics. In a communication received from Wolfgang Schreiber of the International Shooting Federation, Abhinav, who has now joined college in the national capital, has been informed that a formal invitation to take part in the meet, tentatively scheduled to be held on November 18 and 19, would be sent to him through the Indian Shooting Association. The 17-year-old Abhinav who missed making the final of his event at Sydney by just one point must now forget what happened at the 2000 Olympics and look ahead. Now is the time for him to prepare for the 2004 Olympics and beyond and for that he has to get back to his hard grind of practicing and taking part in competitions. And the Munich invitation should help him to get back into a proper shape of mind, without which no shooter can withstand the tough competition at the international level. As Abhinav has told this reporter time and again shooting is a very demanding sport as everyday throws up new challenges. In fact, Abhinav has repeated often that in shooting one is “always shooting against himself.” And how prophetic were his words can be judged from the fact that at Sydney the shooters who finally claimed the medals could not touch Abhinav’s junior world record of 596 out of 600 recorded in the preliminary of the Munich World Cup. Though Abhinav has joined a professional college in Delhi his practice is suffering. Given the space constraints in Delhi he has to travel all the way to the shooting ranges in Tuqlakabad for practice every day, a no mean task given the traffic conditions in Delhi. In Chandigarh Abhinav has his own airconditioned shooting range where he can practice for hours together. After his brilliant performance in Sydney, and all know that shooters all mature with age (the gold medal winner in the 10-metre event at Sydney was 37 years old), Abhinav has set his eyes on the next Olympics, to be held at Athens. But shooting is a very expensive sport. It is strange that the government has done nothing for this shooter who has all the qualities to win an Olympic medal for the country. It is on people like Abhinav that the hopes of the nation rest and the government must make available all it can for him to realise his dream. It may be difficult for him to overcome the sense of disappointment but Abhinav on whose young shoulders rest a very mature head should be able to overcome his disappointment and look ahead. The Hungarian coach of the Indian shooting team, Laszlo Szucsak of Hungary has gone on record to say that there was tremendous scope for Abhinav to improve further. But for that India has to upgrade the shooting ranges and the shooters should start shooting on electronic targets apart from taking part in good competitions. One just hopes that somebody is listening! |
Brazil crush Venezuela, Romario scores 4 RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 9 (Reuters) — Veteran striker Romario, who hit a hat-trick last month on his first international outing in over two years, scored another four goals yesterday as Brazil thrashed Venezuela 6-0 away in a World Cup qualifier. Argentina beat arch-rivals Uruguay 2-1 in a fiercely contested River Plate Derby while Ecuador kept up their hopes of a first-ever World Cup appearance by winning a pulsating encounter against Chile in Quito. Peru continued to struggle despite replacing coach Francisco Maturana with Julio Cesar Uribe last month as they lost 0-1 to lowly Bolivia in La Paz. The weekend’s games, which began on Saturday with Paraguay overcoming Colombia 2-0 in Bogota, brought the marathon South American campaign to the halfway mark. The 10 countries play each other twice with the top four qualifying for Japan and South Korea and the fifth playing off against the winners of the Oceania group. Argentina are clear leaders with 22 points from five games, followed by Brazil and Paraguay, who have 17 each, Colombia on 15, Uruguay on 14 and Ecuador on 13. The race for World Cup places now appears to lie between these six. Chile’s defeat left them as rank outsiders with 10 points, while Peru and Bolivia, with eight, and Venezuela with three have little more than a mathematical chance. The irrepressible Romario, leading scorer with seven goals despite having played only two games, hit a first half hat-trick in eight minutes in Maracaibo, then completed Brazil’s scoring with another goal midway through the second half. His form has left millions of Brazilians wondering why former coach Wanderley Luxemburgo, sacked last month, refused to pick him for the team for so long. “As long as I get the chance, I will keep on scoring goals,” said the 34-year-old Vasco Da Gama striker, who led Brazil to World Cup victory in 1994. Brazil, due to name a new coach this week, were playing under interim coach Candinho, Luxemburgo having been given his marching orders last week following a dismal two-year reign which left the national team in chaos. Debutant Euller and midfielder Juninho Paulista scored Brazil’s first two goals in a curious game. The first 20 minutes had been even, with the home fans even chanting “Ole” as Venezuela knocked the ball about before collapsing and conceeding five goals in 18 minutes. In Buenos Aires, former Argentina captain and coach Daniel Passarella faced his own country for the first time since taking charge of neighbours Uruguay last year. The game, predictably, was passionate but short on good football. First half goals by Marcelo Gallardo, later taken off injured, and Gabriel Batistuta put Argentina in control but a close-range effort by Federico Magallanes three minutes after the break set up a tense second half. It was Argentina’s first home win against Uruguay since 1978 - ironically, the year that Passarella led them to World Cup victory in the same River Plate Stadium. A 76th minute goal by Agustin Delgado, his fourth of the qualifers, gave Ecuador a well-earned win over Chile at high altitude in Quito where they have taken 13 out of a possible 15 points. In a match full of enterprising football, particularly from Ecuador captain Alex Aguinaga, Chile nearly snatched a late equaliser but substitute Sebastian Rosental’s shot was brilliantly saved by Jose Cevallos. The group’s two lowest scoring teams met in La Paz, where predictably a single goal was enough to decide the outcome. It was scored by Bolivia’s Roger Suarez in the fourth minute, pulling them level with opponents Peru on eight points. |
