Greg Chappell, Wright to reach on October 22

SHARJAH, Oct 18 (UNI) — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shortlisted greg chappell and John Wright for appointment as coach of the Indian cricket team, BCCI secretary J.V. Lele said here today.

Talking to UNI, Mr. Lele said both Chappell, the former Australian skipper, and Wright, the former New Zealand captain, would reach Chennai on October 22 and meet board officials, including its president A.C. Muthmaiah, the next day.

Asked whether the BCCI had consulted the players on the appointment of a foreign coach, he said “We have taken their views... They are positive”.

On what was the pressing need for choosing a foreign coach for team, the BCCI officials said: “We have had Indian coaches like Sandip Patil and Madan Lal in the past. We thought we will try foreign coaches also... let us see how far it will be sucessful”.

He said he could not say at this stage whether the contract with the foreign coach would be performance linked or for a particular period of time. “All this depends on our discussions with them... We can’t say anything at this stage”.

On whether there would be an assistant coach also for the team, Mr Lele said “not at this stage”.

Reports in the media had suggested that the team would have an assistant coach also and Roger Binny, Sandip Patil and k. Srikkanth were among the contenders.

Asked whether the board was satisfied with the Indian team’s performance in the ICC knockout tournament in Nairobi, Mr Lele said “it was a good performance”.

He was confident that India would win the coming three-nation Coca Cola Cup Cricket Tournament here from October 20 in which Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are the other teams.

Mr Lele’s remarks came amid reports that former Australian coach Geoff Marsh, who had reportedly been offered 3,67,000 U.S. Dollars to coach the Indian side, had withdrawn his interest in the job.

The new coach is likely to take up the charge of the team from November 1.

In the Sharjah Cup, Anshuman Gaekwad will continue to be the coach of the Indian team. Gaekwad took over from Kapil Dev as a stop-gap arrangement after kapil resigned the job in the wake of allegations against him in the match-fixing scandal. Gaekwad was also the coach in the ICC knockout tournament in which India finished as runners-up behind New Zealand.

CHENNAI (PTI): Former Australian opener Geoff Marsh today announced that he was not interested in taking over as the coach of the Indian cricket team.

Marsh, who expressed his inability to take up the job citing family commitments, issued a statement in perth claiming that he had already written to the BCCI about his withdrawal from the race.

“I wrote to the Indian cricket board 10 days ago indicating that I was withdrawing my interest in the position. I withdraw for the same reasons that I stepped down from my role as Australian coach in September, 1999 — to spend more time with my family,” he said in a statement issued by the Western Australian Cricket Association.

Marsh was reportedly offered a whopping sum of 700,000 Australian dollars (approx Rs 1.90 crores) to coach the Indian side.

BCCI, however, maintained that it had not received any intimation from Marsh and has invited him along with former Australian captain Greg Chappel and New Zealander John Wright for discussion on October 23 here.

Contrary to the reports that Wright had already been selected for the post, BCCI Chief A.C. Muthiah said: “Board still has an open mind in the appointment of the coach. We have called all the three for discussion.”

Scribe seeks apology from Atherton

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17 (AFP) — Another ghost from the past returned to haunt the England cricket tour of Pakistan today when a local sports journalist threatened legal action against Michael Atherton over a 1996 insult.

Journalist Asghar Ali said he wanted to give former England captain Atherton a “last chance” to write a public apology for the insult made at a press conference at Rawalpindi during the sixth World Cup.

Already angry after England’s defeat by South Africa, Atherton tried to understand Ali’s question in broken English before saying: “Can someone get this buffoon out of here?”

Ali told AFP that unless Atherton, who is in the Test side for the current tour, wrote an apology within 10 days he would take the matter to court.

He said the insult had ruined his life and tainted his reputation as a journalist.

“My personal life, my professional life and my financial life has been affected,” he said, adding that his fiance at the time had called off the marriage because she “did not want to be the wife of a ‘buffoon’.”

Ali, a university graduate and vice president of the Pakistan Sports Journalists’ Association, said he was writing a book about the incident, titled “buffoon: me or you”.

“I have talked to many international cricket captains including Hansie Cronje and (Arjuna) Ranatunga about Atherton and their comments are in this book,” he said.

“I want to publish the book when the matter is completed.”

The incident drew protests at the time from the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. England’s team manager apologised in a written statement but Atherton did not.

Before a ball has been bowled, the first England tour of Pakistan in 13 years is already struggling to bury past bitterness and off-field problems.

Golota looking for clean fight

DETROIT, Oct 17 (AP) — Andrew Golota is looking for a clean fight. A short fight is what’s on Mike Tyson’s mind.

“I am approaching this fight like it is going to be a clean one,” Golota said yesterday after working out at the Powerhouse Gym in Madison Heights, Michigan. “I plan to fight clean as much as possible.”

“I’m not worried about Golota’s tactics,” Tyson said after a workout at Detroit’s Brewster Gym, where the great Joe Louis once trained. “If he is knocked out it does not matter. I am looking to do some serious damage. I am looking for a quick ko.”

The two heavyweights who have sullied their reputations with dirty tactics in several bouts are scheduled to fight on Friday night in the Palace at Auburn Hills.

“Both fighters are professionals and know how to fight,” said Al Certo, Golota’s trainer. “The media wants a dirty fight and has been trying to talk the fighters into it. I think it is going to be good fight. If Tyson does fight dirty, Golota might pick him up and body slam him or throw him out of the ring.”

Tyson, who appeared relaxed, said he doesn’t believe he is the despised figure he is sometimes portrayed as being.

“If every white person really hated me, I would not make dollar,” the former undisputed heavyweight champion said. “Any one with any kind of intelligence would know that. Anyone that is ignorant would want to believe that. I am an anxious guy and I am bitter. Listen, I am just insecure sometimes. Sometimes I over-react when I should not.

“I fought in London (actually Manchester, England) and Scotland and all the white people there loved me. I come back here (the USA) and I hear all these bad things about me.”

Golota has failed to win big fights. He twice was disqualified in bouts he was winning against Riddick Bowe. He was stopped in one round by heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis and he was stopped by Michael Grant in the ninth round of a fight he was on the verge of winning.

“I think Tyson’s promoter probably thought I would be a good opponent for him,” Golota said. “We will see Friday night. This is definitely going to be a very interesting fight for the viewers. I have worked very hard for this fight. I have sparred, boxed and run more than ever before. I am ready.”

Indian duo bracing up for world meet

BANGALORE, Oct 17 (UNI) — Fresh from the success in the Tokyo tournament, the ace tennis duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Peas are fine-tuning themselves for the “exciting” ATP World Doubles Championship to be held here from December 13.

“I am very excited about playing in Bangalore We will have to concentrate and we should get our rhythm back. However, we have not set winning the world doubles title as the goal, Mahesh Bhupathi told newsmen at the Katrnataka State Lawn Tennis Association which is being spruced up for the legend’s championship next month.

The pair, which came together after more than a year’s separation, had won the Japan Open beating Chilean-Brazilian pair of Nicolas Massu and Andre Sa.

He said they would participate in four tournaments at Basel, Paris, Leon and Stockholm before competing in the World Doubles Championship.

Asked about their chances in the tournament, he said: “We have a good record at home. No one has beaten us in the Gold Flake tournament (in Chennai) in the last three years. We have played well in front of the home crowd,” he added.

Replying to another question, Bhupathi said it would be difficult to predict as to who would be the tough pair to beat. “We will assess as we progress. We take one match at a time.”

Eight top doubles teams would be competing in the tournament carrying a prize money of $ 7,50,000.

The pair, which had won two Grand Slam titles, failed to live upto the expectations at Sydney Olympics. Both of them were recovering from injuries and they did not agree that they could not combine well together. It was one bad day as they lost to top seeded Mark Woodford and Todd Woodbridge in the second round of the Olympics.

On the chances in the tournament, Mahesh said that they had not beaten any leading pair after they came together again this year.

Asked on the reaction in the circuit about him and Leander coming together after a year’s break, he said people must be happy. Doubles was a dying sport and naturally they would have been excited, he added.

On his future plans, Mahesh said that he was likely to pair with Ai Sugiyama in the mixed doubles. The plans would be finalised by the end of the year. However, Martina Navratilova, who had paired with Mahesh in Wimbledon, was also keen to playing together, he added.

He said Bob Barmichaen was likely to coach both of them for 15 to 20 weeks. However, he was not with them in Sydney Olympics.

Mahesh, who had expressed his keenness in improving his singles rating a couple of years ago, said that he would try at some singles events. If his shoulder permitted him, then only he would continue. Otherwise, the star would focus only on doubles.

On the suggestion that Davis Cup players should compulsorily compete in nationals for getting selected to the team, he described it as silly. First the system should be changed.

Stressing that he was not taking away credit from nationals, he said if the players get good rating competing in Challengers and Futures, there was nothing wrong. The best beam should go to Davis Cup. The people should not shoot off their mouths, he said without taking the name of non-playing captain Ramesh Krishnan.

About the plans for the next year, he said it would be a normal year and he would be competing in various tournaments.

Randhawa races to the top

GURGAON, Oct 17 (UNI) — Jyoti Randhawa scripted a familiar story on the opening day of the Rs 8 lakh HT ProGolf 2000, when he raced to the top of the leaderboard with a sterling round of seven-under 65 at the par-72, 7,070-yard DLF Golf and Country Club course here today.

Randhawa, searching his seventh title in last eight outings in India, led by one sroke over Gaurav Ghei and Harmeet Kahlon, who submitted cards of six-under 66. Vishal Singh of Jaipur was placed fourth at four-under 68, while Rafiq Ali and Monish Bindra were joint fifth at two-under 70.

Shiv Prakash, who won the TSM Open last week with a record four-day aggregate of 25-under, started with a one-under 71 and shared the seventh place along with Indrajit Bhalotia, Arjun Atwal, Basad Ali and Romit Bose (all Calcutta).

Randhawa was in superb form as he returned a bogey-free round. He started with five successive pars before making birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth holes to be three-under at the turn. On the back nine, the Gurgaon-based golfer, who is a regular at the DLF course, made further birdies on the 12th, 15th, 16th and 18th. “I am pretty pleased with my scres but I still need to work on my approach shots,’’ said the defending Indian Open champion who returns to this very venue for the Hero Honda Masters in his quest to become the first player on the Asian PGA tour to win a hat-trick of the same title. “The course is in excellent condition but I feel that the rough should be grown a little longer,’’ he added.

Gaurav Ghei, who is in superb form and is high on confidence this season, is perhaps missing the Lady Luck on his side. Ghei has twice finished runner-up and twice third already in 2000-2001 season, but a victory has been eluding him so far. The Delhi-based golfer began his campaign in superb style once again.

He started the day with a birdie and then added two more on the sixth and seventh holes. The highlight of Ghei’s round was a 40-footer birdie putt on the ninth hole which made him four-under at the turn. Ghei continued in the same vein on the back nine and made birdies on the 10th, 13th and 18th holes and dropped only one shot at the 17th where he missed a two-footer par putt.

“You can get enough birdie chances on this course and compile a good score if your putting is okay. I would have been much more happier if I had not had a slight lapse of concentration on the 17th hole,’’ said the India Cements-sponsored Ghei who found all 18 greens in regulation.

Slender half-point lead for Lahiri

JAMSHEDPUR, Oct 17 (PTI) — International Master-elect Atanu Lahiri of West Bengal was sitting pretty with a slender half-point lead over his nearest rivals IM Tejas Bakre and Neelotpal Das after the seventh round of the 38th National B Chess Championship here.

It was welcome rest day today for the participants at this mega-event with three in contention for the title.

Lahiri had 6.5 points from possible seven and even if draws all the six remaining rounds, he will reach the magic figure of 9.5 points and a place in the forthcoming National A championship. In all 251 players from all over the country are battling it out for the coveted 12 slots that will take them to the National A.

Tejas Bakre is another player who has had a smooth run in the event so far. After winning the Asian junior chess championship for the second time Bakre appears to have covered the lost ground and happy days are here again. He looks a sure bet in the top 12 if his form is any indication. So far he has conceded two draws for his six points.

Neelotpal is a gritty fighter who plays for a victory no matter what. This approach has yielded some stupendous results, the most famous being his victory over highly-rated GM Nigel Short of England.

Neelotpal started the tournament with a 6/6 score but lost to Lahiri in the 7th round. Nevertheless, he has it in him to make up for that one lapse.

Top seed IM R.B. Ramesh is down but not out.

Having accumulated 4.5 points from his seven games so far, Ramesh will have to get back his form to score five points from six games.

As many as 15 players share the fourth spot on 5.5 points and another pack of 18 players follow them with five points apiece.

So far only one International Master Sharad Tilak has bowed out of contention for the qualifying slots.

Another casualty has been IM-elect Rahul Shetty, who faces a daunting task of scoring six victories on the trot to reach 9.5 points.

The bad tie break, however, might still not find him in the top 12.

Points position after 7 rounds:
1 Atanu Lahiri 6.5 points, 2-3 Tejas Bakre, Neelotpal Das (both 6 points), 4-18 IM G.B. Prakash, IM Sandipan Chanda, IM K. Murugan, IM Lanka Ravi, IM P. Konguvel, IM N.S. Babu, IM S.C. Sahu, IWM Nisha Mohota, S. Sriram Jha, S. Satyapragyan, N. Sanjay, G.P. Singh, Vishal Sareen, R. Balasubramanium, and K.V. Shantharam.

China thrash Indonesia to top group

TRIPOLI, Oct 17 (AFP) — China thrashed Indonesia to top the Asian Cup’s group of death here yesterday as South Korea’s soccer tournament hopes received a potential killer blow in the shape of a 1-0 defeat against Kuwait.

China routed Indonesia 4-0, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes, to leave them in a promising position in group B with one round of matches left.

The Chinese are level on four points with Kuwait but top the standings on goal difference after blitzing the Indonesian defence in a one-sided mismatch.

A point each for China and Kuwait in their match on Thursday will be enough to guarantee both teams a place in the quarter-finals - leaving South Korea needing to beat Indonesia and hope they progress as one of the two best placed third teams.

Anything less for Korea and coach Huh Jung-Moo, who has already offered to resign following the Korean’s first round exit at the Olympics, and he can probably start planning to spend more time with his family.

By contrast, China eased the pressure on coach Bora Milutinovic as they outclassed minnows Indonesia.

China, lucky to sneak a 2-2 draw against South Korea in their opening match on Friday, produced a far more composed performance albeit against much weaker opposition.

The victory also came as welcome relief to China’s globe-trotting Serb coach Milutinovic, who is hoping to get his team into a winning groove.

“I’m very happy to have won this match. The important thing was to make sure of the victory early in the game and we managed to do that,” Milutinovic said.

“We had a few injury problems, but in the end we won easily. I know we’re not 100 per cent guaranteed for the second round, but I think four points and our goal difference will be enough to get us through,” he added.

Milutinovic has been hired with the long-term job of taking China to the 2002 World Cup finals, but after a patchy start to his tenure could not have afforded a poor result against one of Asia’s weaker teams.

Midfielder Li Ming opened China’s account, nipping in to head home a cross from Xu Yulong in the third minute.

Five minutes later, China doubled their tally with a penalty.

Indonesia defender Warsidi lunged recklessly at Eintracht Frankfurt striker Yang Chen, leaving Lebanese referee Ayad Nabil no option but to point to the spot.

Shen Si stepped up to blast home past Indonesian keeper Hendro Kartiko and make it 2-0.

The shell-shocked Indonesian defence looked vulnerable whenever China attacked down the wings and their weakness on the flanks and in the air was in evidence for the third goal.

Li Tie curled in a cross from the right and the impressive Yang ghosted away from his marker to head in goal number three.

Qi Hong wrapped up the scoring in the 90th minute, jinking into the box to sidefoot home.

Korea’s defeat came after veteran Kuwait striker Jassem Al-Houwaidi pounced in the 43rd minute.

However, Huh shrugged off the huge setback and sounded a defiant note and laid his hopes on a vast improvement in their next match against Indonesia.

“The team did not play to its true ability and the players were not able to exert control over the game,” he said.

“After watching China beat Indonesia 4-0, they were not in the best mental state but they will be in the next match,” he added.

His kuwaiti counterpart Dusan Uhrin, who guided the Czech Republic to the 1996 European Championship final, laid his success down to a change in style.

“We decided after the Indonesian match to change our style and it paid off for us,” he said.

Jarnail’s cremation on Oct 22
By Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH,Oct 17 —The body of legendary footballer Jarnail Singh, who died in Vancouver, Canada, three days back, will be brought to India on October 21 by a British Airways flight which will touch down at the Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11.05 a.m.,according to family sources.

The former Olympian’s son, Harshmohan Singh, will escort the body which will be received by the Union Sports Minister, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, son-in-law Sukhbir Singh and Balraj Singh, Arjuna Award winner Gurdev Singh, who is Superintendent of Police at Jalandhar, and senior football coach RK Bhanot besides other officials and dignitaries connected with the game. It will then be taken to his native village, Panam, near Hoshiarpur for the last rites. The cremation will take place on October 22 at 1 p.m.

Jarnail Singh, who had served as Additional Director in the Department of Sports, Punjab, was the only football Olympian from the state and his heroics in the Jakarta Asian Games and the Rome Olympics are now history. His decade-long stint with Calcutta’s glamorous outfit, Mohun Bagan, is an inseparable part of Bengali folklore. No wonder, the club where he devoted a good part of his life ,convened a special meeting at Calcutta yesterday to mourn the demise of their former hero, who was one of the greatest defenders that India have ever produced. The Mohun Bagan management also decided to float a trophy in memory of Jarnail Singh which will be awarded to the best player of the National Football League.

Meanwhile, according to a report from Jalandhar,a condolence meeting was held today to mourn the death of Jarnail Singh which was attended by a host of Padma Shree and Arjuna Award winners besides Olympians mostly serving in Punjab Police. The meeting presided over by Mr MS Bhullar,ADGP,PAP,placed on record the services rendered by Jarnail Singh towards upliftment of Punjab soccer. Among those who paid tributes to the former Olympian were Mr Kuldip Singh,SP,who is also the sports secretary, Arjuna awardees Balbir Singh, Gurdev Singh, Kartar Singh, and Sukhpal Singh, and Olympians Ramandeep Singh and Baljit Singh Dhillon.

In Chandigarh, Mr HS Niagar, a lawyer, who was a class mate of Jarnail at RK Arya College, Nawanshahr, before he (Jarnail) moved over to Khalsa College, Mahilpur, said the demise of the father-figure of Punjab soccer was an irreparable loss to Indian football.

Run-outs ‘turning point’ in final

MUMBAI, Oct 17 (PTI) — The run-outs of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were the turning point in the ICC knock-out final against the Kiwis, which India lost narrowly, at Nairobi on Sunday, coach Anshuman Gaekwad said today.

“Both Sachin and Saurav (Ganguly) had given the team a flying start and we were hoping for a score of 300-310 before the two run outs took place in quick succession and we could manage just 264 runs in the end,” he told PTI here after the team’s return from Nairobi.

“These things (run outs) happen and it was unfortunate that it happened during the final and that too when things were going very well for us,” he added.

When queried why medium pacer Venkatesh Prasad, the most economical Indian bowler in the final, was underbowled, Gaekwad said “yes, I think Venky should have been given his full quota of 10 overs as he had just conceded 20 runs from his six overs and had also picked up two crucial wickets”.

“However, our boys performed brilliantly and there was a marked improvement in all departments of the game including fielding. We did a world of good for our reputation by beating world champions Australia and talented outfit South Africa quite convincingly in our earlier matches but slipped at the last hurdle,” he added.

Praising the performance of debutants Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, the former opening batsman said “it was heartening to see the youngsters play without any pressure on foreign soil in their first outing for the country”.

“I think the team is moving in the right direction and when we (Indians) play positively we are always a hard team to beat,” Gaekwad said.

“The best thing for the players is to put the defeat behind them and concentrate on the next assignment. There is no point in worrying about the past as the present team could do wonders in the years to come,” he said.

“With so many talented youngsters in the side the fielding aspect has gained tremendous boost and I hope it will continue to blossom in years to come,” Gaekwad added.

When asked about India’s chances in the forthcoming Sharjah tri-nation series which also has Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in the fray, the former Test star said “we have a very good chance and if our boys play the same way they played in Nairobi then I don’t see why we cannot win it”.

The skipper of the Indian team, Saurav Ganguly, did not speak to the media as he had to catch a connecting flight to Calcutta.

Cronje seeks right to work as commentator

DURBAN, Oct 17 (PTI) — Sacked South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje has demanded that he be allowed to practise as a columnist or broadcaster, notwithstanding the life ban imposed on him by the cricket authorities.

His lawyer Leslie Sackstein made this demand on behalf of Cronje after calling on the United Cricket Board of South Africa to lift the ban or face high court action.

“We cannot accept that Cronje can lose out as a cricket commentrator in newspaper columns or television,” Sackstein said.

“How can they suggest that people cannot have freedom of speech? The UCB can deny him entry into grounds where they have control but they certainly cannot prevent him from working as a presenter in a studio,” he said.

“I wrote to them and said we thought the resolution to ban him had been taken unlawfully and have asked them to withdraw it, otherwise we would have to consider appropiate action.

“We have invited them to tell the ICC that this is our view and that the ICC must be under no misconception about our accepting the validity of the resolution.”

Cronje’s cricket career came to an end following his involvement in match-fixing with Indian bookmakers during two tours to India. Delhi Police have tape recordings of his conversation with an Indian bookmaker.

The King Commission of Inquiry, which has been investigating the scandal in South Africa since April, will finalise its work early next month.

Muzumdar fined

MUMBAI, Oct 17 (UNI) — Mumbai cricket team’s vice-captain was fined 50 per cent of his match fees by the match referee, Prof R.S. Rathore, for questioning the umpire’s decision on the fourth and last day of the five-day Irani Trophy match at the Wankhede Stadium here yesterday.

Amol Muzumdar who was given out after being caught by Laxman fielding close in off the bowling of Murli Kartik by umpire A.V. Jayprakash, was not happy with the decision indicating that the ball had not touched the bat on the way to Laxman.

Muzumdar then did not leave the crease and started gestulating to the umpire that he was not happy with the decision. It took him quite some time to leave the crease.

The match referee terming this as dissent towards the umpire’s decision fined Muzumdar 50 per cent of his match fees.

Shahbad girls score thumping win

NEW DELHI, Oct 17 (UNI) — Striker Jasjeet Kaur slammed five goals as holders SGNP Senior Secondary School, Shahbad (Haryana) routed Krida Prabodhini School, Pune, 10-0 in the super league match of the 7th Nehru Girls Hockey Tournament here today.

In the second fixture Mother Khazani Convent School, Mungesh Pura (Delhi) downed Nari Shikaha Nikaten (Lucknow) 4-2.

The encounter between SGNP and Krida Prabodhini was a totally one sided affair as Haryana girls scored at will especially in the second half.
