Creditable show by Bangladesh batsmen DHAKA, Nov 10 (PTI) — Middle-order
batsmen Habibal Bashar and seasoned Aminul Islam milked an ordinary
Indian bowling on way to scoring half-centuries as Bangladesh put up a
credible 239 for six on the first day of their maiden Test match here
today.
Unbeaten 70 runs by Aminul and Bashar’s splendid 71 inspired the
Test debutants, while the Indians, expected to dominate the hosts, ended
a frustrating day with still four Bangladesh wickets remaining to be
taken.
As Bangladesh celebrated their elevation as the 10th Test playing
nation amidst fanfare, Bashar and Aminul’s performances provided an
icing on the cake at the end of the day.
With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself present to witness the
occasion, the packed Bangabandhu Stadium cheered the players throughout
the day with every single run scored.
Bashar joined the action in the middle after the Indian pace debutant
Zaheer Khan had struck the first blow removing Mehrab Hossein (4), who
edged a catch behind to Saba Karim.
The one down batsman, who was ignored in the first list of team
announced by the Bangladesh selectors, made good the opportunity and
justified his inclusion with a magestic innings.
Seasoned Javagal Srinath, returning to the team after months of
inaction, could hardly generate any pace or swing from the track and
went wicketless for the day, while young Zaheer was menacing at times.
Bangladesh opener Sharihar Hossain (12) was next to go edging spinner
Sunil Joshi to Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly, setting the stage for
Bashar-Aminul partnership.
Zaheer was at it again when he induced a well-set Bashar to go for a
big one but instead the batsman snicked the ball for Ganguly to take the
catch in the slips.
After Bashar’s departure, former national captain Aminul, who had a
slow start, went from strength to strength providing a knock of
substance which helped Bangladesh cross the 200-run mark comfortably.
Left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi was the most successful Indian bowler
with three wickets for 69 runs, but there was nothing to cheer for India
at the end of the day.
Left-arm fast bowler Zaheer celebrated his debut with two wickets and
was economical conceding only 36 runs in 14 overs, while Ajit Agarkar
chipped in with one wicket for 46 runs. Scoreboard

Injured
Jeremy to stay with squad
PERTH, Nov 10 (AFP) — Young West Indies fast bowl Kerry Jeremy will
remain with the touring squad in Australia despite undergoing surgery
later today on a jaw broken in two places.
A West Indies spokesman said the decision for Jeremy to remain in the
16-man squad was based on the belief the 20-year-old from Antigua would
recover quickly.
If all went well, he could be playing again in four weeks, the
spokesman said.
The tour, embracing five Tests — the first starting November 23 —
and a one-day series against Australia and Zimbabwe, continues until
mid-February.
Jeremy was felled at Perth’s waca Ground yesterday by former Test
express bowler Matthew Nicholson on the opening day of the tourists’
initial first-class game of the tour, a four-day workout against Western
Australia. |

announces probe panel
AUCKLAND, Nov 10 (Reuters) — New Zealand Cricket said today it had
appointed a three-man team to look into allegations that former captain
Martin Crowe took money from an Indian bookmaker.
The inquiry will be headed by retired high court judge Sir Ian Barker
and Queen’s Counsel Nick Davidson, assisted by lawyer Tim Gresson.
A report released by the Board of Control of Cricket in India last

have been paid or offered money for information.
“The BCCI report claimed that Martin Crowe received $ 20,000 for
providing information to Indian bookmaker M.K. Gupta in 1992.
“Martin has strenuously denied the allegations against him and has
welcomed the initiation of an independent, New Zealand-based inquiry,”
New Zealand cricket chief executive Christopher Doig said in a
statement. |

India
lose to UAE in snooker
DUBAI, Nov 10 (PTI) — Fancied Indians were pipped by UAE ‘A’
2-1 as the hosts edged closer to their first major triumph in the second
seven-nation Emarat International Snooker Tournament here.
India’s Sarang Shroff went down 3-4 to UAE’s Obaid Khalifa after
winning the first frame 63-61. Khalifa then rallied to limit the Indian
to just 31 points in the second and 18 in the third to go a clear 2-1.
Shroff came back strongly with a break of 56 in the fourth to draw
level. The next two frames went in favour of Khalifa 81-25, 80-68.
Immediately after, Khalifa materialised on a red ball miss by Shroff
and with the large crowd-support finished the game 70-26.
Earlier in the championship, Yasin Merchant had given India a
positive start with a 4-0 win over Mohammed Mustafa Shehab.
In another encounter, Pakistan beat Thailand 2-1 and improved their
chances of finishing at the top. |
Indian men advance; women held ISTANBUL, Nov 10 (PTI) — Indian men
advanced in the standing’s list with a fine 2.5-1.5 victory over
Kyrgyzstan while the women remained on course for a respectable finish,
drawing with Belarus 1.5-1.5, in the 12th round of the 34th Chess
Olympiad here today.
Top seed Russia put up another good show to overwhelm Armenia with a
huge margin of 3.5-0.5 in the men’s section. The Russians have 34
points in their kitty now and enjoy a 2-point lead over nearest rival
Germany who downed the USA 3-1.
India is tied for the 10-13 spot with 28.5 points to its credit. The
next round of the remaining two rounds will be crucial for India as they
take on a not-so-strong Poland.
In the women’s event, the Chinese (28 points) are cruising to a
smooth victory. They defeated Germany 2-1 and have a 2.5 points lead
over Georgia. Indian women have accumulated 20 points.
It was Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran who anchored the Indian victory
today. Playing white against e. moldobaev, the Indian stalwart firmly
put behind the loss yesterday and crushed the Modern Benoni defence.
After routine opening moves, Sasikiran emerged with a slight
advantage and slowly squeezed the counter attack on the queenside with
timely blockades by minor pieces.
When Sasikiran initiated a king-side attack, Moldobaev sensed
imminent trouble. Fearing disaster, Moldobaev decided to sacrifice his
queen bishop pawn but did not get the desired counter play.
Sasikiran pushed the central pawns to create decisive threats and won
on the 51st move.
The other three boards for India ended in draws. On the second board,
GM Abhijit Kunte took on V. Magai from the black side of a Queens Indian
defence and did not have any difficulty in equalizing after the opening.
The pieces got exchanged at regular intervals and the peace treaty
was signed after 39 moves. |
