Campbell props up Zimbabwe NEW DELHI, Nov 18 — After opting to bat first, Zimbabwe, two down for 15 at the end of the ninth over, did well to recover to end day one at 232 for five in the first Test against India at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here today. The visitors owe their recovery to two good partnerships, the first between Stuart Carlisle and Alistair Campbell who put on 120 runs for the third wicket, and the second between Andy Flower and skipper Heath Streak, who have added 77 runs for the unbeaten sixth wicket. While Carlisle scored a very watchful 58, two more half centuries came off the bats of Campbell and Andy Flower, who, at the draw of stumps, was batting with 55 runs to his credit. Giving him company was skipper Heath Streak with an unbeaten 25. The Indians also lent a helping hand to the visitors by dropping a number of chances that came their way. First, Shiv Sunder Das failed to latch on to a difficult chance offered by Carlisle at the forward short leg position. Earlier. Ramesh failed to grab a fast moving ball at the second slip position to offer a second life to Rennie. It is a different matter that the Zimbabwe opener could not make much use of the life. Earlier, Javagal Srinath, who was the only Indian bowler to cause a fair amount of problems for the Zimbabwe batsmen, shocked the visitors early in the innings by claiming two quick wickets, the first of Grant Flower (0) whom he clean bowled with the total reading zero, and then of the other opener, left-handed Gavin Rennie (13), who was caught behind by debutant Delhi wicket-keeper Vijay Dahiya with the total reading 15. Showing no rustiness which he exhibited at Dhaka during Bangaldesh’s inaugural Test against India, he rose admirably to the team’s requirement as he bowled within himself. In his first spell of seven overs, Srinath had an analysis of 7-4-15-2. And although he did not claim any wicket in his second spell, he was largely instrumental in restricting the runs, giving away just 16 runs in his five-over second spell while in the third spell, he had figures of 4-2-8-1, claiming the prized wicket of the well set Campbell, who was caught by V.V.S. Laxman at slip after compiling a well made 70 ( 210 minutes, 154 balls, nine fours , one six). India have only themselves to blame for letting Zimbabwe off the hook after claiming the two early wickets. The Indian think thanks, for reasons difficult to fathom, opted to field only four regular bowlers, two medium pacers in Javagal Srinath and Ajit Agarkar and two left arm spinners in Sunil Joshi and Murali Kartik, leaving out not only off-spinner Sharandeep Singh who could have given the Indian attack some variety but also the sensational Zaheer Khan who has turned out to be the fastest Indian bolwer of contemporary times. This strategy of playing an additional batsman might well prove to be counter-productive as the two irregular bowlers, Sachin Tendulkar and skipper Saurav Ganguly himself, could not pose much problems to the Zimbabwe batsmen. Although Sachin did claim a wicket, the prized one of Carlisle , who was caught by Sunil Joshi at extra cover, his was only a defensive role and the Zimbabweans were able to read him perfectly, as all of them were willing to play the waiting game cutting out all frills from the batting. The Indian skipper on the other hand, who came in place of the tired Srinath after the Karnataka bowler had sent down seven overs on the trot, was not at all effective as Carlisle picked up three fours in his third and last over of the day. After this battering Ganguly did not return to bowl and as the day ended the Indian bolwers were just trying to complete their quota of 90 overs and never looked of getting a breakthrough. With the strip already showing uneven bounce with the odd ball already tending to stay low India might well rue their plan of playing an additional batman. If a squad which has the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly in its ranks cannot put up a good total what will the additional batsman do can be anybody’s guess.

Pakistan struggle to reach 333 LAHORE (Pakistan), Nov 18 (Reuters) — Pakistan avoided the follow-on but were still 147 runs behind England when they ended the fourth day of the first Test on 333 for eight today. Yousuf Youhana was 77 not out and Saqlain Mushtaq 14 not out at the close. England declared their innings close at 480 for eight in their first innings. Pakistan began the day on 119 for two and Salim Elahi and Inzamam-ul-Haq added a further 80, taking their third-wicket partnership to 98, before England pace bowler Craig White made the breakthrough. Elahi edged the ball on to his stumps as he played forward and was out for 44. Inzamam reached his 28th half-century in his 68th Test with the help of eight fours before he was bowled by Ashley Giles for 63. In the last over before lunch White had 19-year-old debutant Qaiser Abbas caught by Graeme Hick at gully for two. Resuming after lunch at 210 for five, Pakistan soon lost the wicket of captain Moin Khan, who was leg before to pace bowler Andrew Caddick for 17. The 250 came in 89 overs but at 272 White claimed his third wicket of the day when he trapped all-rounder Abdur Razzaq lbw for 10. England brought in close fielders and picked up another wicket before tea when Wasim Akram played back and pushed at a Giles delivery and White scooped up the ball at short midwicket. But Youhana and Saqlain denied England another wicket and batted without mishap through the final session of the day. SCOREBOARD England (Ist innings): 480-8 declared (G. Thorpe 118, C. White 93, M. ACB chief
defends Mark Waugh SYDNEY, Nov 18 (AP) — Australian Cricket Board chief executive Malcolm Speed has rejected a call for Mark Waugh to be prevented from playing in the five-Test series against the West Indies starting next week. The Weekend Australian newspaper today called on Waugh and West Indian batsman Brian Lara to be stood down from international cricket after being mentioned by bookmaker Mukesh Gupta in India’s
CBI report into match-fixing The newspaper, which ran a large photograph of Gupta on the cover of its sports section, said Waugh and Lara standing down “would signal the determination of this generation to repair a game destroyed by some of the game’s most admired players.” Waugh and Lara deny any wrongdoing with Gupta. Speed was given the right of reply in the Weekend Australian and wrote why he believed Waugh, 35, should be allowed to continue his Test career. “Today, The Australian repeats its calls for Mark Waugh to step aside. Such a suggestion may even strike a chord with many cricket followers looking for a symbolic sacrifice to ease their anguish over the recent revelations in the game,” Speed wrote. |
‘Kumble’s problem akin to Srinath’s’ COIMBATORE, Nov 18 (PTI) — Ace Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble is suffering from shoulder problem similar to the one experienced by speedster Javagal Srinath, according to renowned South African arthroscopic surgeon Dr Fergusson. ‘‘I have examined Kumble for about 40 minutes (in Chennai earlier this week) and he has developed shoulder problem on his bowling arm,’’ Fergusson told PTI here today. But, he said once Kumble was relieved of the problem, he could play for another 10 years easily. Kumble, who complained of the problem after the recent ICC knock-out tournament in Nairobi, was ruled out of the series against visiting Zimbabweans. Asked whether an immediate surgery was required, Fergusson said he had given some instructions to Kumble’s personal therapist and also to team physio Andrew Leipus. A decision on surgery would be taken after observing his progress. Fergusson, who had earlier treated Srinath, said he was in constant touch with the two and enquiring about the progress. Kumble had given him a video cassette of his performance against Pakistan in New Delhi last year when he equalled the world record taking 10 wickets in one innings. This would help him in studying Kumble’s bowling action and also to suggest necessary improvement, Fergusson said. Asked why Indian cricketers were prone to such problems, Fergusson attributed it to large number of one-dayers played without rest. Fergusson was here in connection with a two-day discussion on “Update on arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery” organised by Ormed Medical Technology Ltd, a member of HUG group, Germany. According to Ormed sources, Fergusson is making a CD on ‘dos’ and ‘donts’ for the benefit of Indian sportsmen, particularly in sports like cricket, basketball, discuss throw. This would be released sometime in the first quarter of 2001, they said. |
Sachin opens photo exhibition NEW DELHI, Nov 18 — Master batsman Sachin Tendulkar, accompanied by Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly and other members of the Indian team, inaugurated a photo exhibition by Kamal Sharma at the Delhi and District Cricket Association premises here today. Both the Indian and Zimbabwe team members commended the excellent cricket photographs put on dispaly in the exhibition, which also features some photographs of the ICC knock-out tournament held in Nairobi last month. |
Safin, Kuerten on collision course PARIS, Nov 18 (AFP) — Top seeds Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil and Marat Safin of Russia kept on track for a final showdown at the $ 2.95 million Paris Masters Series as both marched into the semis at the Bercy stadium yesterday. Second seed Safin, who leads Kuerten by a wafer-thin margin in the ATP Champions Race, ousted Spanish eighth seed Alex Corretja 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 in 1hr 34min to set up a meeting with Spanish 12th seed Juan Carlos Ferrero. Ferrero took three hours and missed a trio of match points in the final set as he ousted Fabrice Santoro, the only home survivor, 6-4 6-7 (10/12) 7-5. Kuerten now faces Australian 13th seed Mark Philippoussis who ended the hopes of German qualifier David Prinosil 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/3) in the other semi yesterday. Safin was pleased he had managed to keep his volcanic temperament in check against Corretja when the going got tough in the opening set. French Open Champion Kuerten, the top seed, earlier had advanced with a smooth 6-3 6-4 success over Albert Costa, the third Spaniard to have made it into the last eight. Safin broke Corretja in the opening game and moved out to 3-1 but then hit long to allow his rival back in at 3-3 with a rebreak. The Spaniard won four games on the trot to lead 5-3 but Safin broke back in the ninth game and forced the tiebreak, which he won despite double-faulting for 1-2 and letting slip a 5-2 lead as Corretja netted to concede the set — having already squandered four set points at 5-5. But in the second set, Safin, who has a tour best six titles this year, broke for 2-0 in the second only for Corretja to break straight back with a terrific topspin lob. He went 30-0 on the Corretja serve but the Spaniard looked to have got out of trouble with an ace. However, a vicious Safin backhand and a Corretja return wide gave him the break for 4-2. Safin managed just a 51 per cent ratio of first serves — but his power was always a problem for Corretja — whom he forced wide on match point to complete his success with an overhead smash. Kuerten had good reason to be happy, meanwhile, as he hangs onto Safin’s Coattails in the Champions Race Tussle, the Russian currently just 20 points clear. New York: Monica Seles won her first WTA Championships as a teenager in 1990. Ten years later, she will face an eager teenager who has the same goal in mind. Russia’s Elena Dementieva continued to be the biggest surprise at this year’s season-ending WTA Tour event. Last night she followed up her first-round upset of defending champion Lindsay Davenport with a thrilling 6-4 2-6 6-4 victory over fellow teenager Kim Clijsters of Belgium. Earlier yesterday, Seles advanced to the semi-finals of this tournament for the first time since 1992 as she defeated Aouth Africa’s Amanda Coetzer 6-3 6-4. In a match featuring two future stars of women’s tennis, Dementieva and Clijsters provided the crowd of more than 13,000 with hard-hitting baseline tennis. The decisive third set saw Clijsters rally from 0-40 down in the fifth game to hold for a 3-2 advantage before a dramatic sixth game seemingly put her in control. Dementieva went up 40-0, only to have Clijsters rally to force deuce. From there, the two battled through seven deuces as Clijsters failed to capitalise on three break chances before utilising a backhand drop shot on her fourth break opportunity to take a 4-2 lead. But Dementieva would not buckle as three straight forehand errors by Clijsters in the next game got the Russian back on serve. After holding serve to level the set at 4-4, Dementieva forced a break point off two straight forehand winners and got the crucial break when an error-prone Clijsters hit a backhand wide. |
Victorian batsmen
flay WI attack MELBOURNE, Nov 18 (AFP) — The West Indian tourists were made to pay the full price by Victoria for their abysmal first innings on the second day of a four-day cricket match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here today. After yesterday’s debacle when they were dismissed for 167, the Windies’ bowlers were in the firing line as Victoria surged toward a huge first innings lead. At the close of the second day, Victoria were 304 for three, leading the Windies’ first innings total by 137 runs. The tourists remained on the ground for several minutes after play, probably wondering just how they were going to match Australia in next week’s opening Brisbane Test after watching Brad Hodge (134 no) and Jason Arnberger (99) belt them to all parts of the mcg. It was a dire leadup to the Test with dropped catches and an impotent bowling attack against a Victorian batting line-up which has struggled on the domestic scene this season. A defining moment came late in the day when the Windies took the second new ball against Hodge and rookie Michael Klinger (38 not out). After just a few overs, skipper Jimmy Adams had only two slips waiting for edges while employing a defensive deep backward square leg and deep fine leg for a bowler of the class of world-record holder Courtney Walsh. |
NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (PTI) — Punjab went into top gear after having dismissed Services for paltry 87 runs and stroked 430 in their first inning, and then pegged the hosts onto the backfoot on the second day of their North Zone Ranjit Trophy match here today. Facing a huge first inning deficit of 343 runs, Services, who are already out of contention from the knockout stage, were 69 for one in the second innings, still 274 runs from avoiding innings defeat and two more days of play remaining. Services opener Deepak Sehrawat was bating on 32, and Sanjay Verma (batting 6) were at the crease when the stumps were drawn. Narendra Singh made 21 before falling victim to Sandeep Sawal, who had a good outing earlier in the day. Sawal played a cameo innings scoring unbeaten 41 runs. Resuming at 217 for four with Pankaj Dharmani batting on 92 and Reetinder Singh Sodhi (7) for company, Punjab accelerated their innings with ease. The two added 83 runs for the fifth wicket and in the process Dharmani completed his century before Maitery removed him after the batsman had scored 128 runs. Sodhi (35) departed soon with the Punjab score at 291 and the visitor took lunch at 316 for six. Harminder Jugnu (28), Harbhajan Singh (52) and Sawal all added good contributions as Punjab made 430 runs before being bowled out in an extended tea session. AP, Air-India win badminton
titles CHANDIGARH, Nov 18 — Both Andhra Pradesh and Air-India teams finally defended their titles in Shafi Qureshi Cup (girls) and Narang Cup (boys) at the Servo-Indian Oil 56th Inter-State Badminton Championship which concluded here this evening at Sector 42 indoor badminton hall. Ms Vineeta Rai, IAS and Advisor to the UT Administrator was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. The girls final proved to be a cliff hanger, as in first singles, the unexpected ousting of Gutta Jwala of AP by fancied Parul Priyadarshini of Air-India proved fatal for the defending champions. Gutta could not adjust her rhythm in first game and lost 5-11, but in second, however, tried to come back. At 10-10, Parul made no mistakes and gave a 1-0 lead to her side. But in doubles, Jwala along with Shruti Kurien made mincemeat of Tanmoyee and Fatima of AI in straight games 15-1, 15-8. AI and AP were tied at 1-1. Then the onus of rested on Shruti and Trupti Murugundem to give the lead to their respective sides. Trupti who was given the top seeding in singles matches also, lost the first game 8-11 to Shruti. But second was more taxing for Shruti, who lost 5-11. Finally AP’s Shruti won 13-10 and the title for AP. The boys final between Air-India and Maharashtra was absorbing, with the AI boys dominating the game right from the beginning. SDS Krishna outplayed Himanshu of Maharashtra in three games 15-12, 8-15, 15-12. In the doubles, SDS Krishna and Anup Sridhar outscored Varun and Nishad 15-11, 15-9 to capture the title from Maharashtra. The individual events will begin tomorrow. |
Indian duo made to look like rookies MUMBAI, Nov 18 (UNI) — Former champion Geet Sethi of India and his lesser known compatriot Nalin Patel were today given a severe drubbing by British professionals David Causier and Roxton Chapman, respectively, bringing a terrible end to the Indian challenge in the World Open Billiards Championship being played in Middlesborough in England. Both, Patel and Sethi, are seasoned players and know the good and weak points of rivals, whom they are playing for some years. But according to the information received here, in last night’s quarter-finals Indian duo were forced to look like rookies. Causier, who was no where in the international scene, when Sethi won the title for the first time years ago, humbled the much-decorated Indian 9-2 while Patel watched his humiliation from Chapman of 9-1 through the smoke off his own cigarettes. Later in the day the shell shocked Indians were joined by a bitter world number three Peter Gilchrist, who lost to lowly ranked Chris Shutt 6-9. The five top Indians — Sethi and Patel, Alok Kumar, Ashok Shandilya and Devendra Joshi — had a week ago shown a wonderful adaptation to the new 50-point event though they had time to practice only in England. They emerged triumphant in their respective groups but when the real challenge of knock-out began Joshi, Kumar and Shandilya were flattened out. Sethi and Patel were reserved by the British professionals, who hand in day in and day out in the clubs for practice, for last night’s supper. The fifty-point system needs a quick top-of-the-table position and the Indians, who are not exactly professionals in the true sense, wavered there very badly. |
Parinder Sharma hits
double century MANDI, Nov 18 — Captain Parinder Sharma hammered a double century in a serial to the carnage he had started yesterday as Haryana scored a massive 457 for five before declaring their first inning against Himachal Pradesh on the second day of their North Zone Ranji Trophy match played at Shaeed Havaldar Krishan Chand Stadium here today. Parinder Sharma, unbeaten on 74 after the first day took over from where he had left yesterday. He hit the ball all over the ground as Haryana asserted their balling supremacy over the hosts. Parinder’s dogged efforts and good support from Sanjay Dalal took the match firmly out of control of the hosts. Himachal, chasing a daunting total made 34 runs before the stumps were drawn for the day due to bad light. Openers Arun Verma and Nischle Gaur were on the crease with 17 and 12 runs, respectively at close. Earlier during the day, Haryana resumed the play with yesterday’s total of 240 runs for three wickets. Rajesh Puri who was playing on 46 yesterday could just add nine runs to his total and became the third victim of Rajinder Thakur, the only successful bowler from the hosts’ side. He took three wickets in 36 overs with five maidens, giving away 103 runs. Parinder Sharma and Rajinder Puri added 40 runs for the fourth wicket. But it was the fifth wicket partnership between Parinder, 207-run knock studded with 23 fours and one six, and Sanjay Dalal’s 61 runs which frustrated the rival balling attack, putting their team firmly in a position from where they can put tremendous pressure over the hosts. Parinder Singh and Pankaj Thakur remained not out. |

Mukesh shares lead with Ranjit NOIDA, Nov 18 (UNI) — Mukesh Kumar (Mhow) caught fire on the last three holes to catch up with Chandigarh’s Ranjit Singh in the lead, as the twosome were tied at seven-under 209 on the penultimate day of the Rs 7-lakh GAIL co-sponsored, ONGC-NGC Open Championship here today. Breathing dangerously down the leaders neck just one stroke behind at a tally of six-under 210 was Vijay Kumar. Shiv Prakash was placed fourth at four-under 212, while Ali Sher occupied the fifth spot at three-under 213. Mukesh Kumar overcame a luke-warm front nine to card a three-under 69 thereby handing himself a decent perch to go for the kill on the morrow. He had a discouraging start to his round. On the first, well placed approach shot left him with a 15 ft eagle putt to sink. Mukesh three-putted to par the hole. He played his front nine to level-par with a bogey on the fourth and a birdie on the sixth on his outward journey card. A nightmare start to his return journey, with bogeys on the 10th and 11th gave not a hint to what was to follow. A pared 11th hole later, Mukesh witnessed a sudden return to form with a chipped in birdie on the 12th preceding birdies on the 14th and 16th the outcome of a 20 ft putt, with the icing on the cake coming in the form of an eagle on the 17th. |
