Indian bowlers on
test NEW DELHI, Nov 17 — The opposition posed by Zimbabwe might be medicore. The Indian squad might have the home advantage and is just back after an emphatic nine-wicket win against Bangladesh in their inaugural Test at Dhaka. And to add to all this is the first foreign coach the Indian team has ever had. But in spite of this pluses, Saurav Ganguly, leading India in a Test match for the first time at home, cannot be a contended man given the fact that minnows Bangaladesh extended the Indian bowling line-up, picking up 400 runs when they batted first at the Bangabandhu Stadium at Dhaka. The two Tests against the visiting squad from Africa, the first beginning at the Ferozeshah Kotla here tomorrow, might yet again expose the thin Indian bowling. And to add to the bad news in the Indian camp is the fact that Anil Kumble will not be assisting the team in the entire series after having failed to pass a fitness test today. Kumble complained of shoulder pain soon after the ICC Knockout Tournament in Nairobi and missed the matches in the subsequent triangular series in Sharjah. The cancellation of the Indian tour of Pakistan will enable Kumble to recover fully before Indian take on Australia in yet another home series early next year. As of now the biggest worry in the Indian camp as they prepare to take on Zimbabwe for the fourth series is to get rid of the label of inconsistency — brilliant one day and down in the dumps the very next day. At Dhaka the much-vaunted Indian batting line-up scored in fits and starts and nearly came a cropper and it were players like Sunil Joshi, Ajit Agarkar and Murali Kartik who enabled India overhaul the Bangaladesh first innings total after Shiv Sunder Das, the new opener from Orissa, Rahul Dravid as also Sachin Tendulkar failed to come good. The one good thing which emerged from Dhaka is the fact that in Ramesh India have found a dependable opener and one hopes that the selectors continue with him and not experiment with stop gap openers in an effort to slip an additional bowler into the playing 11 tomorrow. At Dhaka, the Indian bowling was spearheaded by Sunil Joshi, adjudged man of the match, who not only scored 92 but claimed five for 142 in the first innings and three for 27 in the second to put India on the road to victory. But more important, the return of Javagal Srinath has given the Indian bowling added confidence and it is hoped that the rustiness he showed at Dhaka would be a thing of the past. With the wicket looking to take spin as the match progresses, India are most likely to go for a three-man spin attack with Punjab’s Sharandeep Singh probably getting his Test cap. He together with Murali Kartik and Sunil Joshi should give enough variety to the Indian spin attack with the pace department being handled by Srinath and Ajit Agarkar. In the team of 13 announced today, Chandigarh youngster Yuvraj Singh has been left out. It seems Yuvraj will have to wait for some more time before he gets his Test cap. The final playing 11 will be named after taking a look at the wicket tomorrow morning. As for Zimbabwe, they have nothing to lose. They have started well on the current tour with a four-wicket win at Faridabad against Board President’s XI after getting good runs in the tour opener at Indore. Skipper Heath Streak, who missed both the tour matches on medical grounds, is back and raring to go. So are Alistair Campbell, the Flower brothers and Gavin Rennie, all of whom are in fine fettle. Teams: Zimbabwe (from):
Heath Streak (capt), Guy Whittal, Andy Whittal, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Alistair Campbell, Stuart Carlisle, Gavin Rennie, Douglas Marillier, Travis Friend, Trevor Madondo, Mluleki Nkla, Paul Strang, Brian Murphy, Bryan Strang and Henry Olonga. Umpires: S. Venkataraghavan (India) and John Hampshire (England). Third umpire: Vijay Chopra. Reserve umpire: BSP Rao. Match referee: Barry Jarman (Australia). Play time: from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. |
Madhavan to
question Ajay today NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (PTI) — Former Delhi captain Ajay Sharma has been given the last opportunity to appear tomorrow before cricket board’s watchdog K. Madhavan who is questioning the players named in the CBI report on betting and match-fixing. “This is the third time I have called him. Each time, he has come up with some excuse or the other (for not appearing),” Mr Madhavan told PTI today. “If he doesn’t come tomorrow, I am not going to give him a further chance,” he said. Sharma is one of the five cricketers — others being Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar and Nayan Mongia — named in the CBI report. Prabhakar, Jadeja and Mongia, alongwith former physiotherapist Ali Irani were questioned by Mr Madhavan in Chennai while Azharuddin went through a six-hour grilling by him in Hyderabad yesterday. Mr Madhavan has said he would submit his report to the BCCI by November 25 ahead of its special general meeting slated for November 29. |

England in control; Saqlain bags 8 wkts LAHORE, Nov 17 (AFP) — Off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq bagged a career-best eight for 164 but it was not enough to take the pressure off Pakistan’s batsmen on day three of the first Test against England here today. Pakistan ended at 119 for two in reply to England’s 440 for eight declared and need another 162 runs to avoid the follow on. Salim Elahi was on 15 and Inzamam-ul-Haq 11 when bad light forced the players off the field eight overs before schedule. Pakistan will need some responsible batting on the fourth day to avoid disaster and salvage a draw. Pakistan raced to a solid start with Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi looking in good touch. Anwar hit four well timed boundaries in his 40 before falling leg before to part-time spinner Graeme hick in the last over before tea, leaving Pakistan at 63 for one at the break. Afridi played in his usual cavalier style, hitting six fours and a six off Hick to reach his third half century off in just 61 balls. But with the score at 101, Afridi played a shot too many and was caught at long off by Darren Gough off left armer Ashley Giles. In the morning Saqlain grabbed eight for 164 in a marathon bowling stint of 74 overs. But England’s tailenders added 87 runs in the session, with an eighth-wicket partnership between Ashley Giles and Ian Salisbury worth 70. Giles remained not out with a hard-earned 37. “It was tough to bowl on this pitch and I did my best for Pakistan. Getting all 10 wickets would have been historic,” Saqlain said. “I usually do not bother about records but getting eight wickets is no mean achievement. “The record did come to my mind on the third day but it was not destined for me — I am still happy that I did well,” he said, adding that he was not frustrated when England declared. Saqlain’s previous best figures of six for 46 were recorded against Australia at Hobart last year. Only two bowlers, Jim Laker of England and Anil Kumble of India, have taken 10 wickets in a Test innings. Resuming at 393 for six, Craig White was just seven runs short of his maiden Test century in the fourth over of the day when Saqlain forced an edge to Yousuf Youhanna at forward short leg. White, who along with Graham Thorpe helped save England’s innings on the second day, hit nine fours and two sixes in his career-best innings lasting 290 minutes. Graham Thorpe top scored with 118 for England, supported by Michael Atheron (73) and Marcus Trescothick (71). Meanwhile, England management said captain Nasser Hussain had a scan of his back which found general wear and tear but nothing serious. Injured Kumble to miss
series NEW DELHI, Nov 17 — Leg-spinner Anil Kumble may miss the series against Zimbabwe as he has failed to produce his fitness certificate on the eve of the first Test at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here. Kumble had struck a “perfect 10” against Pakistan to create history when India last played a Test match at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground, two years ago. Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly said he wanted Kumble to have enough rest, and be fit for the coming Australian tour, “instead of rushing him through.” Kumble had complained of shoulder pain soon after the (International Cricket Council) ICC knock-out tournament at Nairobi, and missed the triangular series in Sharjah and the one-off Test against Bangladesh at Dhaka. Kumble is learnt to have consulted leading South African orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Mark Fergusson, in Chennai recently at a seminar, who had advised him to take corrective measures and enough rest. Fergusson had also treated Javagal Srinath and Ajay Jadeja for their injury problems. Ganguly said he wanted Kumble to be fully fit for the series against Australia in February-March next year, and the cancellation of the series against Pakistan has come as a blessing in disguise for the match-winning leg-spinner, as he can give sufficient rest to his shoulder before resuming cricket duty. In the absence of Kumble, Punjab off-spinner Sharandeep Singh will get a chance to make his Test debut, and so also Delhi wicket-keeper batsman Vijay Dahiya. Ganguly said he wanted to maintain the “winning habit” and did not want the team to repeat the mistakes they had committed in Dhaka. “We didn’t play well in Dhaka, and I myself was fighting with my own metal makeup than with the rival bowlers, though I scored some runs”. He said too much one-day cricket had affected the mental makeup of the players, and at Dhaka “we were a little rusty as we were playing a Test match after a gap of eight months (India last played a Test, against South Africa in Bangalore). My expects the top five batsmen to come up with substantial contributions “so that the team can build on a good innings”. The Indian skipper said he would not underestimate the Zimbabwean team though the home conditions were helpful to the hosts. Zimbabwean captain Heath Streak said winning the toss would be very vital as “you have got to get a good score on the board in the first innings”. Streak said his team were a very good blend of fast bowlers and spinners, and would go all out to notch up a victory, “though India are a formidable Test side at home, and they are hard to beat”. Zimbabwe have a score to settle too, for the humiliation of an innings defeat inflicted on them by India at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in a rain-marred Test match in 1993 in which Vinod Kambli had blasted a double century and Maninder Singh had claimed five odd wickets, in his farewell Test. But Ganguly’s men are as formidable as the ones led by Azharuddin in 1993, though then, a player of the calibre of Javagal Srinath had to sit out, due to want of a vacancy in the playing 11. Both Ganguly and Streak agreed that the Kotla wicket was a “good batting track”, which may turn a lot as the match progresses. |

Jeev lone Indian to make cut BANGKOK, Nov 17 (UNI) — It was a dismal day for Indians as only one of the four in the fray-Jeev Milkha Singh-made the cut as World No 1 Tiger Woods leapt to the top of the leaderboard at the end of the second round of Johnnie Walker Classic Golf here today. Overnight at joint fourth place, Jeev Milkha Singh, though managed to make it to the third
round, shot two over par 74 second round and slipped to joint 34th slot with an aggregate of two under 142 (68, 74). Jeev’s compatriot and winner of the Hero Honda Masters and Star Alliance Open Arjun Atwal, had the mortification of not making the cut. The cut was applied at one over par 145 and 81 golfers made it to the final two rounds. Atwal, who had won two titles in a row, found the field too hot for him and carded two over 74 for a total of three over 147 (73, 74) to end at joint 92nd place. Calcutta based Firoz Ali returned one over par 73 second round and totalled six over 150 (77, 73) to finish at 114th place. Delhi’s Gaurav Ghei had a bad day again. He shot three over 75 and with a total of seven over 151 (76, 75). |
Krotiouk captures
singles title CHANDIGARH, Nov 17 — He came, he played, he conquered. This is in a nutshell the story of Sergei Krotiouk of Russia who swept the men’s singles title in the $ 10000 ITF Tennis Tournament which concluded here today at the CLTA courts, Sector 10. The Russian had created a series of upsets in this tournament and the past few days saw Kritouk beating everyone in his way. Today he just pipped John Doran of Ireland in two straight sets 6-2, 6-2 thus demolishing his opponent in 85 minutes. The doubles final was an all-Slovakian affair with Tomas Janci and Michal Merinak outplaying Branislav Sekac and Viktor Bruthans at 6-4, 6-1. |
Punjab bundle out Services for 87 NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (UNI) — Medium pacer Bharat Bhushan ripped through the opponents batting line-up claiming career best haul of eight wickets as Punjab bundled out Services for paltry 87 runs and in reply were 217 for four on the opening day of the North Zone Ranji Trophy league match here today. Electing to bat after winning the toss, services were in trouble from the very start with Bharat Bhushan destroying their batting. It was yet another spineless display by the Service’s batsmen and at one stage the hosts were 14 for four. Only tail-ender J.P. Pandey (20), Sachin Nadkarni (17) and Pankaj Maitrey (14) could cross the double digit. Services batsmen seemed in hurry to go back to the pavillon and threw in the towel without any resistance. Their innings folded just before the lunch. Services innings lasted barely 25.1 overs in which Bharat Bhushan bowled 12 overs conceding only 51 runs. Gagandeep Singh and R.S. Sodhi shared the other two wickets. Punjab also were off to a poor start losing their opener Ravneet Ricky when the score was one and then lost second wicket at 23 with Munish Sharma being clean bowled by Syed Javed. However a 173-run third wicket partnership between Skipper Vikram Rathore and Pankaj Dharmani took the visitors score to 196 runs before Rathore edged Sudhakar Ghag to wicketkeeper Sarabjeet Singh. Rathore made 83 which included 12 hits to the fence. He batted for 202 minutes. At stumps, Pankaj Dharamani was batting on 92 (1x6,13x4,208m) and Reetender Singh Sodhi was on seven. |
