Zimbabwe tail frustrates India
From Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

NEW DELHI, Nov 19 — The Ferozeshah Kotla ground could well turn out to be Andy Flower’s favourite cricketing venue. Way back in 1993 when Zimbabwe toured India for the first time, this 32-year-old South African-born middle-order batsman had recorded a century against India.

And today he repeated his feat as he scored an unbeaten 183 as he took his side, 232 for five overnight in their first innings, to 422 for nine declared—a good total going by the way the strip is behaving.

In the remaining time of play, curtailed to just 21 minutes due to poor light, the home team scored nine for no loss in the seven overs Shiv Sunder Das (4) and Sadagopan Ramesh (3) faced.

Andy Flower’s career-best knock, off 351 balls in 466 minutes of batting during which he scored 24 fours and two sixes, improved upon his previous best effort of 156 record against Pakistan at Harare in the 1994-95 series, came largely due to the unbeaten 97-run stand for the last wicket he shared with Henry Olonga.

Never known to wield the willow with any authority, Olonga stood his ground with resolute and determination for 158 minutes and he scored just 11 off the 90 deliveries he faced. But more important than the runs he scored was the admirable support he gave to Andy Flower for whom tackling any of the seven Indian bowlers used by skipper Saurav Ganguly proved no problem.

This pair, more than any one else, fully exposed the shortcomings of the Indian attack which stated the day’s proceedings in a wonderful fashion with Javagal Srinath, operating with the second new ball, snapping up the wicket of overnight not out batsman Heath Streak off his very first delivery with no addition to the Zimbabwe total.

Six down for 232, Zimbabwe lost wickets in more or less regular intervals and when the ninth wicket fell at 325 a little more than an hour before the scheduled break for tea, it seemed that the innings would fold up shortly . But Olonga had other ideas.

That India were playing one bowler short had already been exposed yesterday as the visitors had recovered after two early blows to end the day at 232 for five by the draw of stumps. Today the Zimbabwe tail wagged like never before as the Indian bowlers fell far short of expectations.

Saurav kept on shuffling his bowlers and at one stage one saw bowlers coming and going off after sending down just two or three overs.

Murali Karthik, who is playing as a regular spinner, was given just 24 overs out of the total of 168 overs sent down by India before Zimbabwe skipper Heath Streak ended the home team’s agony by calling his last pair in.

And even these 24 overs were given in driblets of two and three overs spell, thereby sending out a clear signal to the bowler that he did not enjoy the skipper’s confidence. True, Kartik was wayward at times but knowing the visitors’ weakness against spin, Ganguly should have given him some long spells. But that did not happen.

With Kartik not getting the support of his skipper, the Indian attack was reduced to just three regular bowlers and one saw Javagal Srinath being reduced to a stock bowler instead of a shock bowler. Though the other medium pacer in the playing eleven, Ajit Agarkar, was unable to get any help from the Delhi strip — he could claim just one wicket, that of the No 10 batsman Brian Strang — he at least had the confidence of his skipper.

This saw him sending down a total of 35 overs on a “spinner friendly” pitch. Srinath sent down a similar number of overs for figures of four of 81.

With Srinath and Agarkar sharing the workload from one end it fell on Sunil Joshi to sent down 46 overs to claim two for 116 while irregular bowler Sachin Tendulkar ended with one for 51 after bowling as many as 19 overs, just five short of the overs sent down by Kartik.

At Dhaka, it were Bangladesh who had exposed the shortcomings in the Indian bowling by piling up 400 runs in their very first Test innings and today it was Zimbabwe’s turn to show that the Indian attack was far short of international requirements.

True, the home team must be feeling the absence of Anil Kumble, sidelined due to a shoulder injury, but then no team should depend on just one bowler to deliver the goods. But does India have other competent bowlers or is the cupboard running dry? But the question which arises then is: why did the selectors call up Sharandeep Singh of Punjab to lend some variety to the Indian attack and then decide to induct an additional batsman in the playing eleven.

At Dhaka India could get its act together after first overhauling the Bangladesh first innings total and then skittling them out for a very low total to tie up the match but this time around the opposition is much more tougher.

Sports officials’ meeting put off
From M. S. Unnikrishnan

NEW DELHI, Nov 19 — Former Union Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa had called a meeting of leading sports personalities and sports officials to discuss India’s miserable performance in the Sydney Olympic Games and the match-fixing scandal in cricket on November 21 in Delhi, but his successor Uma Bharati is learnt to have postponed the meeting as she is reported to have expressed her desire to study both the issues a little more closely before discussing the matter with sports bosses.

Mr Dhindsa had called the meeting to discuss the ills plaguing Indian sports threadbare and find ways and means to get at the root cause of India’s continued poor showing in international sports arena, and come up with suitable remedies to be incorporated in the proposed national sports policy, and also to root out corrupt practices from Indian sport, in view of the Sydney debacle, and the cricket match-fixing scandal, that rocked the sporting world.

Ms Bharati, who has returned to the Ministry for a second stint, however, asked for more time to study the whole gamut of how sports federations manage sports in the country.

Treasurer of All-India Tennis Association, Prof T D Francis, who has sent a detailed note to the Sports Ministry for discussion in the meeting, has suggested that only a “Brahmasthra can cure the cancer of Indian sports”.

Sources in the Ministry and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) claim that the Union Budget allocation of Rs 200 crore, out of which only Rs 70 crore is included in the SAI budget, is too meagre to make any impact in a vast and varied country like India, as most of the budgeted allocation is spent on establishment expenses.

But the AITA treasurer begs to differ and says that “there is no shortage of funds, and it’s not that we are short of talent either in any discipline, but that nobody really cares to develop the available talent, train them properly and manage them in a proper way”.

Prof Francis has suggested to the Sports Ministry to change the voting system in all federations\associations from the district level upwards as the present system only helps perpetuate the misrule of a few, who cling to their posts like limpets year after year, at the cost of sports and sportspersons.

A valid suggestion he has maked is that “if there are 20 affiliated clubs in an A Division league in a particular district, allot voting rights according to the results of the A Division league”. This will naturally eliminate “pocket clubs” and “paper clubs”, who presently exist only for the purposes of cornering voting rights.

It’s learnt that many such federations, like AITA, have sent suggestions to the Ministry to introduce only “result oriented-voting” system, instead of allowing “paper votes” to call the shots in Indian sports.

Atherton told to appear in court

LAHORE, Nov 19 (Reuters) — Former England cricket captain Mike Atherton has been summoned to appear in an Islamabad court next month to answer a defamation charge filed by a Pakistani journalist.

Journalist Asghar Ali is suing Atherton for $ 211,500 for allegedly calling him a “buffoon” at a news conference during the 1996 World Cup. Atherton, currently touring Pakistan with the England team, has been summoned to appear in the court of Judge Mohammad Saleem Uppal on December 7.

The court summons said the case would be heard in his absence if he failed to appear. Atherton allegedly made the remark when he faced persistent questioning from Ali, a journalist with the Pakistan Associated Press, saying: “Would someone get this buffoon out of here?”

Atherton, later apologised but some Pakistan cricket officials and journalists’ organisations were still unhappy, saying Atherton should make an apology personally.

Ali’s suit says that his fiancee called off their wedding because of Atherton’s remark, saying she did not want to be associated with a “buffoon”.

Youhana hits ton in drawn Test

LAHORE, Nov 19 (Reuters) — England captain Nasser Hussain suffered a further injury blow as the first Test against Pakistan petered out to a draw today.

England, who declared their innings at 480 for eight in their first innings, were 77 for four when Hussain declared the second innings to bring the match to an early end.

Pakistan were bowled out for 401 earlier in the day but realistic hopes of a positive result were effectively ended on Saturday when the home side avoided having to follow on.

Hussain, who underwent an X-ray examination on his back on Friday, was taken to hospital for a check after being struck on the right arm by a rising delivery from Wasim Akram.

The scan revealed Hussain had suffered heavy bruising but no fracture.

Hussain said he was very satisfied with England’s performance in the first of a three-match series which many said they had no hoping of winning.

“We have proved that we can play spin and we have made huge strides in this Test,” said Hussain, holding his heavily strapped wrist.

“We bowled well and batted well to take up the challenge.

“But we will keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard and we are looking forward to the second Test at Faisalabad,” he said. The second Test starts on November 29.

Earlier, Yousuf Youhana, resuming on 77, went on to complete a hundred in the morning session as Pakistan added 68 runs to their overnight 333 for eight.

HP in comfortable position

MANDI (HP), Nov 19 (UNI) — Himachal Pradesh were comfortably placed at 231 for four in their first innings at the close of the third day today, but still had a daunting task at hand to save the follow on (by 78 runs) while replying to the mammoth 457 by Haryana in the first innings in the Ranji Trophy match being played at Shaheed Havaldar Krishan Chand Stadium here today.

Amit Sharma (batting 58) and Chetan (batting 6) were at the crease after Virender Sharma became Amit Mishra’s fourth victim. Amit Mishra took all the four wickets of the hosts which well today.

Nischal Gaur became only the second cricketer in the history of Himachal Ranji matches to complete 2000 runs after Rajiv Nayyer. Gaur’s 110-run partnership for the first wicket with Arun Verma (37) brought some solace to the hosts.

Arun Verma was the first to go off Mishra’s ball when the score was 110. Hosts could not resist the attack of Amit Mishra and gave away crucial wicket of Nischal Gaur adding just five runs on the board.

Philippoussis ousts Kuerten; Safin wins

PARIS, Nov 19 (AFP) — the new generation are on the march in men’s tennis and Russian 20-year-old Marat Safin is poised to become the youngest No 1 ever when the new rankings are published tomorrow.

Safin reached the final of the $ 2.95 million Paris Masters Series yesterday, thrashing Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2, 6-2 in just 56 minutes to increase his grip not only on the new-fangled ATP champions Race but is set to move clear in the apt entry system, created in 1973, which determines the “true” No 1 in the world.

The Russian, beaten finalist last year against André Agassi on his Paris indoor debut, now plays Australian 13th seed ‘Scud’ Mark Philippoussis, who dumped out Brazilian top seed Gustavo Kuerten 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (13/11).

The final pair have only met twice to date, splitting encounters last year at Indian Wells and Key Biscayne.

Should he be confirmed as top of the ranking system tomorrow, Safin would be the youngest of 18 players to hold the No 1 spot at 20 years and nine days shy of 10 months, John McEnroe having claimed the previous record of 21 years and 15 days.

When McEnroe took top spot on March 3, 1980, Safin was barely six weeks old.

“Mathematically, I’m gonna be No 1,” Safin acknowledged when asked if he had managed to calculate the complex mental arithmetic” — though apt officials would not confirm he had done his sums right.

“I started the year horrible. I didn’t think I was even going to be in the top 20,” said Safin, the us open champion.

He held a 20-point lead in the Champions Race over Kuerten before the semifinal and who can now stretch that further by beating Philippoussis.

Safin, who has won a Tour-leading six titles this year, was delighted with his win which featured five breaks of the Ferrero serve.

He now adds another 25 points to his ranking account and can go to the Lisbon Masters Cup starting November 28 with a healthier advantage than when he arrived here.

Philippoussis earlier shocked Kuerten in a tense one hour 52 minutes battle which had the crowd on the edge of their seats in a battle of 24-year-olds.

Philippoussis squandered three match points before Kuerten, who missed five set points, fired into the tramlines at the end of a match which had a sole break point throughout. “I knew it was going to be an extra tough match. Anything could’ve happened in the second set tie-break. I just managed to get the points at the end.

“It feels great when you win a match like that. I felt I had so much confidence.”

In his first match against Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia the Australian lost the first set 1-6 for the worst of starts before coming through two tie-breaks.

“I was thinking about going home to Miami,” joked the Florida-based star.

Philippoussis now hopes to claim his second Masters success after Indian Wells last year as well as his ninth career title overall.

Kuerten rued his missed opportunities and ruminated on its consequences for the Champions Race.

“I think everything’s going to be decided in Lisbon. There are a lot of points (at stake) there. As long as I have a chance I’ll keep trying.”

NEW YORK: Martina Hingis and Monica Seles turned back the double Russian threat of Anna Kournikova and Elena Dementieva to set a final showdown at the elite wta championships.

Hingis continued her domination of her friend and doubles partner Kournikova on Saturday, advancing to her third straight final in this event.

The top-seed and world No 1 posted her 11th victory in 12 meetings with Kournikova 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 in the semifinals.

Next up for Hingis is another favorable matchup in third seed and former champion Seles of the USA, who beat unseeded Russian Elena Dementieva, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) in the second semifinal.

Hingis brings an 11-2 lifetime record against Seles into her fourth career final at this event. She won in 1998 but lost to Steffi Graf in 1996 and Lindsay Davenport last season.

“As always Martina is very consistent,” Seles said. “She doesn’t make any unforced errors. Her game has probably not suited my game the best. She has beaten me quite easily.”

Although she did not win a Grand Slam this year, the 20-year-old from Switzerland will appear in her 14th singles final in the day, when she vies for her tour-high ninth title of the year and the 35th of her career.

Kournikova, who has yet to win a title in 81 events, will still finish the season at a career-high ranking of seven.

Norms eased on import of shooting equipment
From Jupinderjit Singh and Kamal Kishore Shankar

PHILLAUR, (Ludhiana), Nov 19 — Shooters, both established and the budding ones, have reasons to cheer. The Centre Government has relaxed a number of rules regarding importing of weapons required by the players.

Under the new rules, the air-weapons have been brought under the Open General License category. With this change anybody interested can import a shooting weapon without any additional duty charge after getting approval from the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI).

Giving this information to The Tribune here today after participating in the inauguration ceremony of the 44th National Shooting Championship, Mr Baljit Singh Sethi, Secretary-General, NRAI, said that earlier the interested person had to be among top 8 players of the country in the event. Then, he had to get approval from the Association, the Sports Authority of India, the Director General Foreign Trade and some other government offices before paying a high duty on importing the weapon.

But with the latest relaxation, not only the time consumed in getting clearance from so many offices will be saved but the cost of the weapon will also reduce sharply due to the abolition of the import duty.

As another incentive to encourage the game in the country, the Secretary-General informed that top 25 players of any event in the National Shooting Championship can also avail of the weapons like pistol, rifle and gun under the new rules. Earlier the players had to get clearance from several government offices. The previous rules also allowed only top 8 players of a shooting event to avail of the facility. These weapons would also be free from any import duty.

Mr Sethi said a high-level meeting of the association representatives, and secretaries of the Departments of Commerce, Home and officials of the foreign trade office held early this week had approved these proposals.

Earlier, the chief guests of the opening ceremony of the National Shooting Championship Mr Parkash Singh Badal Chief Minister Punjab, and Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister Himachal Pradesh, could not make it to the academy.

In their absence, the DGP Punjab Mr Sarbjit Singh had to do the needful. According to information available, Mr Badal could not arrive as he had to leave for Delhi in connection with the arrival Mr Ujjal Dusanjh, Premier of British Columbia in Canada.

The non-arrival of the chief guests dampened the spirits of the players as they were expecting the announcement of some incentive for them.

Jaspal Rana once again mesmerised the audience by scoring 578 points out of 600 in the 25 mts. standard pistol (ISSF) event in men’s category, Naresh Kumar of BSF bagged a silver by scoring 567 points while Mahaveer Singh of Army had to be satisfied with a bronze medal by scoring 564 points.

The other results are as follows:

50 mts. Free Pistol (ISSF) men: 1 Samersh Jung (CISF), 2 Ved Prakash (Army), 3 Satendra Kumar (Navy).

10 mts. Air Rifle (ISU) junior women: 1 Meena Kumari, Infantry, (390/400); 2 Rajkumari, Infantry, (387/400); 3 S. Dhillon, Punjab (387/ 400). Rajkumari and Sabeeha Dhillon had tied for second place and the tie was broken by last card score.Top

4th straight outright win for Punjab

NEW DELHI, Nov 19 (PTI) — Displaying a total domination, Punjab recorded victory by an innings and 166 runs against Services for their fourth straight outright win in the North Zone Ranji trophy league here today.

Former Test player Harbhajan Singh, who is relentlessly knocking the door of national side, took a five-wicket haul as Services, facing a first innings deficit of 343 runs, were shot out for 177 on the third day.

Off-spinner Harbhajan (5/40) wrecked the middle order before claiming all tail-enders after Sandeep Sawal (4/41) had rocked the top order early in the day.

Services, who were dismissed for paltry 87 in the first innings, looked a bamboozeled as Punjab kept striking blows one after another. Overnight batsman Deepak Sehrawat (56) was the top scorer after Services resumed at 69 for one with two full days’ play remaining to save the match.

Sehrawat hit 11 fours in his 118-ball knock before he was sent packing by Gagandeep Singh when the Services score read 97. Sawal took over the charge from then on and removed Sanjay Verma (18), Sarabjeet Singh (6), Pankaj Maitrey (3) to reduce Services to 126 for 5.

Punjab now has 32 points from four matches while Services, with a draw against Himachal Pradesh, have just three points and are out of the contention.

Year’s 10th Tour win for Tiger Woods

BANGKOK, Nov 19 (Reuters) — Tiger Woods established yet another career first by winning the Johnnie Walker Classic with his lowest ever four-round total today.

The American world number one powered his way to a second Classic title triumph in three years, winning by three strokes with a 25-under par total to pick up the $ 194,690 winner’s cheque.

Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy finished second on 22 under par after a blistering last-round 64. New Zealand’s Michael Campbell was third, seven strokes adrift of Woods.

Woods’s 10th Tour win of the year was clinched with a third straight round of 65 which put him an astonishing 187 under par for those 10 events.

“I was always looking forward to coming back to Thailand as it is the country where my mother was born,” he said.

“So Thailand is part of my culture and part of my heritage but it was a very, very good day and I thought a 65 would make the mark.

“That would mean Michael (Campbell) or Geoff would have to shoot a 62. But I just happened to have a good week and make a few birdies.”

Woods’s previous four-round best was a 23-under-par tally to finish third behind Phil Mickelson in the recent Walt Disney Classic in Orlando.

It was the second successive event in which the big-hitting, 23-year-old Ogilvy had to settle for the runners-up position. He hit eight birdies in his final round and needed just 30 strokes for his inward nine.

“I’ve never started a weekend two behind, shooting 67 and 64 and lost by three,” said Ogilvy.

“It’s ridiculous and that was as good as I could have played. But all credit to Tiger. He’s the best. He’s the king.”

Indian eves thrash Japan, lift crown

HONG KONG, Nov 19 (PTI) — India made it a maiden memorable triumph whipping Japan 4-1 in the final of the inaugural Asian Hockey Federation Cup championship for girls under-18 at the Kings Park ground today.

So authentic was India’s win that as a final it fell short of expectations.

In a one-sided contest, India played with the same eleven throughout the match in a delightful exhibition of controlled aggression to leave Japan shell-shocked.

In the end, it also turned out to be a sweet revenge for India, who had suffered a 1-2 reverse at the hands of the same team on the opening day.

India had six penalty corners to the four which Japan had, but India’s domination was so pronounced it did not really matter that the margin of penalty corner conversion was not on par to their level of play today.

Nilima Kujur’s spot on penalty corner conversion in the seventh minute put the Indians in the right frame of mind. The award came when skipper Surinder Kaur wove her way in delectably only to be halted in her tracks.

Annarita Kerketta got into the act making the most of the melee to push it in, her effort coming in the 15th minute.

Mukesh had a good start to his round with a birdie on the 1st. This followed by a series of pared holes saw him finish his front nine at one-under.

Vijay Kumar started the day with back-to-back birdies but a bogey on the 3rd, the result of his two-putting from as close as four feet, highlighted a downslide in his round.

Ranjit Singh was a victim of lack of experience today. The Chandigarh based golfer started the day tied with Mukesh but floundered on the very first hole carding a double bogey after his tee shot placed his ball amid the left trees. A bogey on the 4th and birdies on the 3rd and 6th were followed by his second double bogey of the day this coming on the 8th.
