Onion prices to fall in 2-3 days: CM
New Delhi, October 26 While the commodity from Karnataka and other states has started arriving, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said its prices have already come down and to make sure that people get them at reasonable rates, the number of mobile vans selling onions would go up to 125 on Sunday. She said that her government is sensitive to the needs of people and so there is no restriction on the quantity of sale from the vans. A large number of counters have been opened outside Azadpur, Okhla, Ghazipur and Keshopur mandis. Besides, the enforcement and market intelligence wing has been kept on alert to overcome any attempt at hoarding. "The prices have already come down. We hope that the trend would continue and the prices will see a fall in the next 2-3 days. In the last three days, vans have been deployed at various parts in Delhi to provide the commodity at Rs 60 per kg. Their number has gone up to 80 today. They are now selling it at Rs 55 per kg," she said while addressing a press conference at her residence. She said each van has been covering four localities in a day and onions would be sold from around 600 places in the city from Monday. Dikshit said that the commodity's arrival has increased substantially from Rajasthan. "A team of officials has been deputed in Alwar to procure onion in bulk and it is expected that the price would soon stabilise," she said. |
Crisis exposes govt's inaction: BJP
New Delhi, October 26 Addressing party workers of the outer Delhi district, southwest district and Keshavpuram district, Goel said, "The party will take up the issue of onion crisis at booth level in all 14 BJP districts. We will also expose the inaction of Congress on the rising prices of essential commodities over the next few days." "The government was in deep slumber even though another state government suggested it a few days ago to purchase onion from Nashik and sell it in Delhi to overcome the high prices. The government must explain why it did not act on its own earlier," he said. The government claimed that onions are sold through Safal outlets. But, for a population of over 1.67 crore in Delhi, there are only about 350 Safal outlets, which is grossly insufficient. It has been a common experience that whatever quantity arrives at these stores, it vanishes within an hour or so, even if the quality is bad," Goel added. |

Tribune News Service
New Delhi, October 26 K Vijay Kumar (57), who was posted as an advisor to the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and his 51-year-old wife, Sita, who was a banker were found dead. According to the police, Sita's fingerprints were found on the knife that was used in killing Kumar. While all the facts point towards Sita being the killer, investigators are yet to confirm it officially. "We are waiting for the final postmortem report before reaching any conclusion in the case," said a senior police officer. Police sources revealed that Kumar and Sita often quarrelled. They claimed that she had installed CCTV cameras inside the house to monitor the activities of her maids. The cameras only displayed live images and had no option for recording. The couple's daughter Varanya told the police that her mother was allegedly eccentric. When Sita went out of the house, she believed that someone was trailing her. Sita allegedly had a mobile phone jammer in her room. Varanya was irritated at her mother's behaviour. She had been staying away from her family for some time. The last time she spoke to her mother was over the phone at 12.30 pm on Friday. However, Sita's neighbours and her colleagues didn't find her eccentric. They said that she was just fine. Sita worked with IDBI bank. |
