Nakodar still lacks proper garbage dumping sites
Nakodar, October 21 Levelling allegation against Nakodar Municipal Council (MC), social activist Gaurav Jain, who filed an application before New Delhi-based NGT a few months ago, said the MC made brick-walled enclosures for dumping garbage near DAV Girls College, Civil Hospital, Arya Samaj Mandir and New Janata Model Senior Secondary School. Gaurav said the MC was supposed to set up dumping places at proper sites with minimum inconvenience to general public. Besides 70 per cent of the garbage is still thrown in the open as neither any enclosure nor any container has been placed there, he added. When contacted, Nakodar MC Executive Officer (EO) Rajiv Oberoi said, “The brick-walled enclosures have been made at those places where the garbage had already been dumped for the past several years. Janata School at Gaunsh Mohalla has been built without any proper approval whereas the dump was already situated there.” To a query that if a wrong thing has been done, should not that be changed, the EO said, “There is no option but to dump garbage of the town at various places located in the city before lifting it to take at other place.” In reply to another question, he said, “Containers will be placed by Monday at the places where garbage is still dumped in the open. The containers have been sent for repair and we will get them back soon.” A five-member principal Bench of Delhi-based NG Tribunal, headed by its chairman Justice Swatanter Kumar, directed the Jalandhar DC in its interim order on September 3 to prepare a comprehensive and fully scientifically developed plan for collection and disposal of the MSW before setting up a proposed MSW disposal plant in Jalandhar. |
