With the festive of Bakr-Eid just two days away, the buzz and preparation associated with the festival is at its peak in Haridwar, particularly in suburban Jwalapur, where Eid buzz can be gauged with the rush in the market. But the most sought-after place seems to be Mohalla Ghoshiyan, where a goat is drawing a large number of people.

This goat's outer body layer resembles the pious words of ''Allah'' and ''Mohammed,'' which has made this goat more special. People from nearby areas are coming to see this goat and with just two days remaining for Bakr-Eid. This goat is fetching one of the highest bids.

Murshid Habib Raza ,local resident who just bought this goat from a trader, said that the seller had no knowledge of the Arabic language, ''so he could not gauge the importance of the goat.'' But as he spotted the goat and saw the outer skin layer resembling the two pious words, he bought the goat at a maximum price the seller asked

from him. Now Habib is flooded with bids from across the district as soon as word spread that he possessed a special goat. Some Muslim clerics term it as a divine goat, while local Muslims are trying to have a glimpse of this goat and seek blessings. While many want this goat from Habib at any cost, though he is in dilemma whether to sell this unique goat or keep it for himself only. Tanveer Ali,a local resident, said that they had for the first time seen or heard about such a goat ,which has such pious words. ''Everyone wants to have a glimpse of this special goat and many consider it auspicious,'' added Tanveer.

Farmers' stir against BHEL enters 6th month
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, October 14
The agitation by a section of the farmers, who had given their land to the BHEL management for setting up public-sector power equipment at Ranipur here four decades ago, entered its sixth month today. Although some farmers had been compensated for the same, a section of them, who are still awaiting relief, are demanding that their land should be returned to them.

The affected farmers, who are staging the agitation under the banner of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, alleged that the BHEL management had failed to address their woes and was now trying to weaken their movement.

Samiti chief Balwan Singh Chauhan alleged that whenever these farmers resorted to an agitation in the past, the BHEL management gave them false assurances.

General secretary of the samiti Sanjay Sharma alleged that 1,500 acres of farmers’ land that was in the BHEL's possession had not been utilised for the purpose it was procured from them in the 1960s. He demanded that the land should be returned to these farmers.

Santosh Chauhan, a leaders of the women's cell of the samiti, said whenever farmers protested in the past, the BHEL management pressurised them into ending the agitation. "However, this time farmers are adamant and will end the agitation only after the BHEL management gives them in writing as to when their demand will be met. The farmers' agitation completed five months today," said Chauhan.

Sanjay Sharma alleged that the BHEL management had given 30 bighas of farmers' land to the Tehri Dam-affected people under the rehabilitation programme and without any proper documentation. He demanded a high-level probe into this.

Meher Singh Chauhan said even after five months of their agitation, the BHEL management was yet to taken any action, which speaks volume of its tyrant attitude.

I get my strength from Lord Hanuman, says Ramlila actor
71-year-old Chandar Bhan has been playing the role for the past 43 years
Ajay Ramola
Tribune News Service

Mussoorie, October 14
Very few people who gathered to participate in the festivities and Dasehra procession taken out annually in Mussoorie would be aware of the fact that the person behind the mask of Hanuman is none other than 71-year- old Chandar Bhan from Roorkee.

Chandar Bhan has been playing the role of Hanuman during the Dasehra procession for the past 43 years and still has the same strength to regale the audience treading all the way on foot from Landour to Library Bazaar, braving any sort of weather conditions.

Without any let off in monkey-like mischief, Chandar Bhan, donning the attire of Hanuman, regales the children accompanying him all the way to Library Bazaar who love him as he throws the eateries picked up from shops towards them, displaying the monkey tantrums on the way during the procession.

He has never looked back since 1970 and has been performing the role of Hanuman in Mussoorie without a break. This year, too, Chandar Bhan arrived at Sanatan Dharam Temple in Landour around 1 pm and was helped by his close aide Vijay Singh, who helps him with makeup and dressing him in attire of Hanuman for the procession.

As the procession began from the temple after the traditional prayers, Chandar Bhan began his journey from Landour Bazaar to Gandhi Chowk with the same vigour and strength as in the past attributing it to his devotion for Lord Hanuman.

''After wearing the clothes of Hanuman and with the mace in his hand, I feel the power of Hanuman in myself and will carry on till the time the Lord permits me,'' says Chandar Bhan.

Vijay Singh, his close aide, who assists him in dressing up for the occasion, is of the view that it is indeed a miracle that Chandar Bhan, who does not take a single penny for his role as Hanuman, is ready for a gruelling journey at an advanced age even today.

Chandar Bhan thanks the lord and his family who is supportive of him and has never questioned him on his playing the role Hanuman year after year as they know it is one role which gives him immense joy and satisfaction.

However, Chandar Bhan is worried as who would succeed him after he stops playing the role in Mussoorie. ''With the staging of Ramlila coming to a halt, there are not many takers, and it would be difficult to find artistes in future. The children too with all the modern education are not ready to perform on the streets of the town,'' said Chandar Bhan.

Chandar Bhan has not lost hope and says that one day the people of the town will realise the importance of moral values inherent in the story of Rama and would restart the tradition of Ramlilas once again.

Sangmitra, a tourist and housewife from Bengal, who is a regular visitor to Mussoorie during Dasehra holidays, said that this year she had brought her grandchildren to witness the procession and especially the acts of Hanuman. She further said that she was not aware that the person who plays Hanuman was 71. ''The social organisations, including those of senior citizens, should acknowledge his contribution and felicitate him as a mark of respect,'' added Sangmitra.

The case

The BHEL management had procured farmers' land for setting up public-sector power equipment at Ranipur in the 1960s, but it is yet to compensate a section of the peasants.
