DM tells supervisors to identify BPL families

Dehradun, October 11 He said they had successfully completed the first stage of the scheme. Under the second stage, they must identify people of poor sections and those who had claimed to be widows, handicaps and aged. The below poverty line (BPL) beneficiaries of the Antodaya scheme and those dwelling in slum colonies should be selected for the scheme. After the completion of verification, videography of the house of each beneficiary would be carried out so that the focus is on selecting the deserving people, he added. He said the last day for the identification of beneficiaries would be October 12. Hence the supervisors would accept application forms till this date only. He directed all supervisors to prepare a register where they must prepare two sections, of those who were deserving and the ones who were not, among all the applicants. He asked them to specify the reason for labelling them under these two categories, so that while finalising the names, no confusion takes place. He said they must keep in mind that the scheme was meant for the people of the poor section and those who lived in villages. He also clarified that those belonging to the APL category possessing yellow cards, if demanded for new cards to get the benefit of Food Security Scheme, must be assured that they could continue to get ration through their old cards. Their names would not be scrapped from the cards. He said 52 per cent beneficiaries had to be selected from the urban region and 48 per cent from the rural region, as per the population of the area. The Magistrate said the card would be formed in the name of the senior most female member of the family, who is above 18 years of age. A folder based on the scheme, prepared by the District Information Department, was also distributed among the supervisors. The folder entailed information regarding the important points and procedures of identification of beneficiaries. The meeting was also attended by Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Harak Singh Rawat, ADM (finance) Jharna Kamthan, Additional Mukhya Nagar Adhikari, DMC, Uday Singh Rana, District Supply Officer Shyam Arya and District Rural Industries officer Kamal Kumar Rawat. |
MCA student develops mobile app for security of women, elderly

Akhilesh Sharma, a final year student of MCA, has developed ‘U R Safe’, an emergency mobile application for the people who are vulnerable to become victims of violent crimes. While giving a presentation of his application at the SSP Office here today, Akhilesh said, “any person who finds himself or herself in a troubled situation can click on the home button of the application and a message will be sent to the police control room and other people whose numbers have been saved in the application, along with the latitude and longitude position of the victim”. The application will help people in identifying and alerting the resources to help them out of a dangerous situation, he added. “I designed and developed the application in one-and-a-half-month’s time but the idea of the application was mooted by my friend Anuj Singh Rawat”, Akhilesh told The Tribune. The application is free on the android platform and with GPS, it gives 95 per cent exact location of a person. Kewal Khuranna, SSP, appreciated the initiative of Akhilesh and Anuj and awarded them with cash reward of Rs 10,000. “We will hold a one-month workshop on the usage of the application in the Police Lines and anybody can come and learn the functional operations of the application”, Khuranna said. While speaking to The Tribune, Akhilesh said, “I got full support from my teachers and college administration and I have developed the application with an intention of serving the society”. |

In Dehradun, an awareness march was organised in which students from MKP College, State Nursing College, NCC cadets, workers from NGOs, anganwari and ASHA workers participated. Students carrying placards with catchy slogans started the march from the Parade Ground, which was flagged off by CMO, Dehradun, Dr Gurpal Singh. The participants raised slogans condemning female foeticide and passed through Astley Hall, Gandhi Park, Clock Tower and Darshan Lal Chowk before culminating at the Parade Ground. Besides students, the medical fraternity, including Dr RP Bhatt , Director, Medical Education, Dr AS Sangar, Additional CMO, AS Sangar and Dr BS Jangpangi, district nodal officer for the PCPNDT Act, participated in the march Similarly, a workshop for teenagers was held at the Directorate of Integrated Child and Development Services (ICDS). During the workshop, issues regarding problems faced by adolescents, child marriage and teenage psychology were discussed. The Department of Medical, Health and Family Welfare also held a health check-up camp for teenagers to check their haemoglobin count. A poster competition was also organised for the students and later prizes were given away to them. |

Dehradun, October 11 According to a party leader, there is a growing demand for inviting Narinder Modi to Uttarakhand before the elections, so that an environment for the party could be built in the state where it is aiming to win all five Lok Sabha seats. “All senior leaders from different states attended the meeting in New Delhi and discussed the issues pertaining to their states separately. There was no discussion on likely candidates for the Lok Sabha seats but definitely there was a demand for organising election rallies of Modi. Though Haldwani and Dehradun cropped as the likely arenas for the rallies, no formal decision has been taken regarding the date or the venue,” said Ajay Bhatt, Leader of the Opposition in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. Last time when Narinder Modi had come to Dehradun, it was just after the natural calamity and he had created a controversy of sorts by offering to build Kedarnath. But the offer was politely turned down by Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna saying that the state would rebuild it with its own resources and efforts. However, the Gujarat kit prepared for the flood-affected victims was quite popular for its ability to encompass all essentials in a small box. |
Mayor inspects garbage disposal in city, suspends 2 DMC employees
Dehradun, October 11 The officials of the DMC also accompanied him during the inspection. He visited prominent sites, including Vasant Vihar, Panditwadi, Prem Nagar, Gandhi Road, Saharanpur Road, ISBT and Turner Road and found garbage disposal not up to the mark. He said, “It was found that garbage was piled up and scattered up to long distances on the roads. It was a despicable sight to see dogs and cows feeding on the garbage spread out. I have given directions to the officials for regular clearance of garbage.” He said the limestone powder which must be sprinkled on the garbage spot to contain the smell and ill-effects of garbage was not sprayed at most of the places. Because of this, two supervisors were suspended as they did not come to the location when they were called to be enquired about the complaints of the local residents. Many other supervisors too have been served with notices for negligence. The tally of places where the DMC itself will handle garbage disposal is on a constant rise. From two it has now risen to 17 locations. These places are Dhamawala Tehsil, Industrial Area, Shiv Lal School to Reeta Road, Patel Nagar, Lakhi Bagh, Haridwar Road, Dharampur, Sabji Mandi, Balbir Road, Tagore Villa, Araghar, Transit Camp, Seemadwar to ITBP, Majra Road, Sahatardhara Road and Ansari Marg. Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Ashok Kumar said, “In a meeting held with senior officials of the DMC today, it was decided to increase the number of places where our sanitary workers will clear the garbage from the bins. We first discussed the number of vehicles and sanitary workers owned by the DMC. After which we finalised all these places. However, the work related to door-to-door garbage collection will still be handled by the SPML company.” |
WB sanctions Rs 1,000 cr for watershed project
Pithoragarh, October 11 The second phase of the watershed scheme, known as Gramyaa -2, will be started from this financial year in 82 micro water zones of the state. The scheme will be run for next seven years. It will benefit population of 3.18 lakh of 59,300 families in 18 blocks of 8 districts of the state. The project director said Almora, (Dhauladevi, Bhaisichana blocks) Bageshwar,(Kapkot block) Pithoragarh,(Didihat, Berinag and Munsiyari blocks) Dehradun (Raipur, Kalsi, Chakrata blocks) Tehri, (Jaunpur block) Pauri, (Pokhara, Ekesharwar block) Uttarkashi (Mori, Naugaun and Purola block) and Ukhimath , Jakholi and Agatsa Muni blocks of Rudraprayag districts will get benefit from it. The director said maximum amount of the project would be spent on participatory water shed treatment in these micro watershed zones, with the The remaining amount would be spent on increasing job opportunities in these areas and establishment and development of required infrastructure for the project. |
‘The Lion King’ show staged during Wynberg founders’ day celebrations
Mussoorie, October 11 The founders’ day service was held in the Sir Kirby Laing Auditorium where a special 125th founders’ day cake was cut and distributed to the former and present students. The chief guests, Phillip Roots, an alumnus of the school from the 1930 batch, and John Mason, the Vice Chairman of the board of management, addressed the august gathering and laid the plaque dedicating the main academic block in the name of late TW Phillips on the occasion. The chief guests thanked the principal and the staff for all the success in the school. Principal L. Tindale thanked all former students and parents for travelling long distances to reach their alma mater to attend the special occasion and their continued support for the school. The closing prayer was done by Pastor Cornelius. After the founders' day service a “Swimming Gala” was organised, where the swimmers from different batches showed their skills. The main attraction of the ''Swimming Gala'' was the pyjama relays for boys and girls representing various teams, including former students. Special medallions were presented to former school captains. The design of the medallion is taken from the prefect’s medal of 1952. During the course of events a cross-country race was also organised where among the boys Sachin Dalmia emerged the winner while Sonal Singh among the girls was declared first in the girl’s category. A tug-of-war contest was also held between the four houses of the alumnis that was won by Foy house's former students in the end. A shadow performance by the students class V111-A was the highlight of the day's events. The shadow play was directed by N. Daniel and was well appreciated by the audience. The main attraction of the day was a laser show sponsored by the ICSE class of 1994, depicting the history and life in school. The former students of 1994 batch, especially Ram Kumar, who had worked extensively in preparing and collecting the material for the laser show, were elated at the outcome as they were cheered all along during the show. Ram Kumar further said that a testimonial about the school by distinguished people around the country, including the former students such as Bharti Mittal, the head of Airtel, and Kunwar Bhanwar Singh, Sports Minister of the country, and the travel writers Hugh and Coleen, who hailed from the school, were shown on the 60 feet large screen on the occasion. The celebration for the day ended with the final performance of the musical “The Lion King”, which was staged for the alumni, special invitees and parents. Around 500 students from the school participated in the musical directed by eminent theatre director George Pulinkala from Delhi. George, speaking on the occasion, said that the students have been rehearsing for the musical since the past several months and have really blossomed immensely gaining the confidence to do such events in future. The masks for the show were made by the artisans, specially called for the occasion from Madhya Pradesh said Pulinkala. |

Insurance officer held taking bribe
Dehradun, October 11 Suresh had complained against Bhupendra Singh that he was demanding bribe for for clearing his accident claim. He said he had met with an accident some time ago and filed a claim for Rs 30,000. Bhupendra delayed things and finally asked for 20 per cent of the total claim money as bribe for clearing the case. However, on Suresh's complaint a vigilance team laid a trap and arrested Bhupendra red-handed while taking Rs 5,000 as bribe from him. |

Mussoorie, October 11 The chief guest of the ceremony Anup Sahu, Additional General Manager, Northern Railway, inaugurated the function by unfurling the school flag in the school valley field and taking the salute of the marchpast. The athletic oath was administered by Oak Grove Boys’ School captain Akshay Kumar, which was followed by the marchpast by the three wings of the school and the lighting and carrying of the Olympic torch by eminent athlete of the school Vishal Kumar of class X and Vishal Pratap Singh of class IX. The marchpast shield was won by class V in the junior school. In the girls' section it was won by Mirabai house and in boys' section it was won by Shivaji house. In girls' section the Alexander Floating Cup was won by Sakshi Kumari in girls' section. Milan Memorial Cup was won by Shyam Nandan in senior boys' section. In boys' section Vipul Rana was declared as the overall individual champion in sub-junior division, while Niklhil Raj in junior boys' division, Vishal Pratap in middle division and Shubam Kumar in senior division were declared individual overall champions. In girls' section Garima won the overall trophy in the middle division, while Nishta was declared winner in the senior division and won the Milan Memorial Cup, which is given to the best athlete in the school. The overall trophy or cock shield was won by Padmini and Shivaji Houses. The chief guest on the occasion, Anup Sahu, and his wife, who is vice-president, Northern Railway women's welfare organisation, distributed the prizes and citations to the winners in the end. Anup Sahu speaking on the occasion said that sports were important along with the academics as it helps in developing the overall personality of The chief guest congratulated the students on excelling in the field of academics and sports at the regional and national levels. He further said that the Northern Railway had always been generous in supporting the school and making it a premier institute in the country with all modern amenities and infrastructure. Sandip Trivedi, the Prinicipal, Oak Grove School, thanked the chief guest and all present. He appreciated the sportsman's spirit and the performance put up by the students and maintained that sports was equally important as is academics for complete growth of the students. He also informed that the school had made its name in the field of sports in an around the region. Unison School girls hit the bull's eye in shooting event
Dehradun, October 11 Reshu Baliyan won the silver medal in the air rifle junior women category. In the team event, Malika Kanodia, Reshu Baliyan and Saina Kataria won the gold medal each whereas Manya Agarwal won a silver medal in the air pistol category. Mallika Kanodia, Shamrin Mohin and Avleen Virk won the gold, silver and the bronze medal, respectively, in 50m rifle event. In the team event, Mallika Kanodia, Shamrin Mohiny and Avleen Virk won a gold medal each. Kriti Singh won a silver medal in NR 10m air pistol junior women category. Overall, the players of the school won 25 medals in the competition out which 13 were gold, nine silver and three bronze. The shooting championship was held at RISS Shooting Range, Dehradun. |
