300 tins of sweets seized in Abohar: A team of the Health Department on Monday raided a cold store near the Alamgarh bypass on the Abohar-Sriganganagar road and seized 300 tins of sweets that had been reportedly stacked by a trader for sale during Diwali. Another team visited godowns of three leading sweet shop owners and took samples. The development created panic among other sweets manufacturers, most of whom downed their shutters and fled, sources said.

Train rams into car, two killed: An unmanned level crossing near Roranwali in the district has claimed two lives on Monday evening. Manjeet Kaur (40) of Sarwan Bodla village in Muktsar and her son Babblu (17) were killed when a speeding train rammed into their car. They were retuning to their village after meeting their relatives at Hauz Khas village in Fazilka. The victims were taken to the local Civil Hospital. Dr Vaneet Kumar, Emergency Medical Officer, said Bablu was declared brought dead while Manjeet succumbed to her injuries soon after arriving at the hospital.

Punsup Inspector jailed for bribery: Additional District and Sessions Judge Harpal Singh today Monday sentenced Punsup Inspector Suresh Chand Jindal to two years' imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a commission agent at Nihalsinghwala on January 8, 2010.
Jindal had demanded a bribe from commission agent Jaspal Singh of Machike village to clear paddy purchase bills. Officials of the state Vigilance Bureau nabbed him outside Saraswati Rice Mill while accepting Rs 10,000 from the agent.Ropar
34 illegal stone crushers in Ropar: The district police found 34 crusher owners running their business illegally during the last week. A report in this regard was sent to the Ropar Deputy Commissioner and the Mining Department with the recommendation of cancellation of their licences, said Senior Superintendent of Police Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti. He said while 14 screening plants were noticed in Algran area of Nurpur Bedi, nine were found at Anandpur Sahib. Eleven others were running operations illegally at Kiratpur Sahib, he said. There were a total of 177 crushers in the district, he added.
