‘Ghurchari’ woman opposes same-gotra marriages

Monika Rani

Hisar, October 3
Monika Rani, who rode a mare in a 'ghurchari' procession like a groom in Chhapar village of Bhiwani district two and a half years ago as a symbolic protest to male domination, in an about turn, opposes the same 'gotra' marriages while urging the younger generation to understand their responsibility towards their families and society.

Talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of a women function where she was honoured for her unprecedented move to perform 'ghurchari' despite opposition by khap panchayats, she said there were some traditions and customs which were followed in every society. “Since our social tradition prohibits same-gotra marriages, it should be adhered to by the younger generation,” she said.

Monika, 24, who got married to Satender Singh of Kinala village in Hisar on May 12, 2011, however maintained that violence against young couples in the name of honour was condemnable and even those who perpetrate this crime must be repenting their act later on. “It’s shocking that a false sense of honour drives the parents to indulge in such brutal killings. No doubt they, too, must be repenting after some time.

A change in the mindset of society towards couples in love and towards girls whom they hold up as their honour and instilling good values in children at an early age are a few solutions to such incidents,” she stated.

“Young girls and boys should understand their prime responsibility of getting education. If someone deviates from this goal, there must be something lacking in his/her upbringing. Families should handle such youngsters responsibly instead of resorting to brutal violence against them which often results in ruin of the entire family,” he said.

Asked about her views on same gotra, she opposed such marriages but stated that families and society must leave such couples to their own fate. The families have no right to enforce kangaroo-court style diktats and even resorting to honour killing.

Her mother, Kamlesh Devi, said their family got threatening calls from khap panchayats directing them not to perform the 'ghurchari' but they went ahead despite these threats. “The khap panchayat threatened us with social boycott and other punishments and summoned us to a panchayat which met a week after Monika’s marriage. But we did not get intimidated and with support from the groom’s family managed to ward off all such threats”.

She said the symbolic 'ghurchari' had a positive social impact in their villages where several girls were going for higher education after the incident. “Earlier, hardly any girl used to go for higher studies after completing schooling but now around 25 girls are enrolled in colleges who persuaded their families to allow them to get admissions in Bhiwani, a town located about 25 km from their village”.

Gurgaon, October 3
The INLD will organise a state-level rally at Kurukshetra on Haryana Day (November 1) to celebrate the birth anniversary of the late leader, Ch. Devi Lal.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the party’s state executive held under the chairmanship of INLD MLA Abhay Singh Chautala and party’s state president Ashok Arora in Delhi yesterday.

INLD MP Ranbeer Prajapati, MLA Rampal Majra, former Agriculture Minister Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, Telu Ram Jogi, former ministers KL Sharma, Surinder Madaan, Jagdish Nayyar, Jagdish Yadav, Krishan Panwar, Mohammad Iliyas, Satbir Singh Kadiyan and Sheela Bhayan were present.

The INLD leaders criticised the Haryana Government for the state’s "worsening" law and order situation, scams in recruitment process, increased inflation and anti-people policies.

During the meeting, former MLA Nishan Singh, in a resolution, said the high court’s recent decision had exposed the scam in the recruitment of 1983 PTI teachers done by the Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government in Haryana.

Former Agriculture Minister Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, in a resolution, said the Hooda government had been making tall claims on prices of sugarcane, but the farmers don’t even get the actual cost price. The INLD demanded that the sugarcane prices be hiked to Rs 375 and wheat price to Rs 1,600 per quintal.

In another resolution, former Haryana DGP MS Malik stated that the law and order situation in the state was worsening day by day, which was clear from the statement of PL Punia, MP and Chairman of the SC/ST Commission, that Haryana was becoming a state of rapists.

MP Ranbeer Prajapati said the prices of diesel, LPG and other essential commodities had been increasing sharply, and the trend should be checked to provide some relief to the people.

The also brought a resolution to criticise the Haryana Assembly Speaker for suspending Opposition MLAs on the very first day of the Assembly session for the whole session to oblige the Hooda government. All resolutions were passed unanimously.

It was also decided to start a training camp for booth-level workers from October 9 in Kalanwali Assembly segment and issue identity cards to them. The meeting also decided that INLD’s student wing, INSO, would start a Jan Chetna Yatra from Kurukshetra on October 5 to reach out to the people and tell them about the policies of Ch. Devi Lal.

“We have also taken some vital steps to check unnecessary delay in the supply of books hence delivery of books to all schools will be carried out before the commencement of the new academic session next year,” said Bhukkal, adding that she herself was regularly monitoring delivery of text books in schools on a day-to-day basis.

In reply to another question, she said efforts were being made to provide quality education and to develop skilled human resource so as to increase the opportunities of employment for the youth.

Hisar, October 3
Stating that the women needed to go a long way in their struggle for equality in every sphere of life, leaders of the All-India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) criticised the Congress and the BJP for ignoring the issues concerning women.

While addressing during the eighth state convention of the AIDWA recently, its national general secretary Sudha Sunder Raman said the women were not safe in the country as the incidents of their exploitation were rampant. “The young girls are being killed in the name of honour. We face humiliation everywhere, be it home, workplace or public place. The ruling classes have been ignoring our needs for long. In such a scenario, we must wake up to get our rights," Raman said while urging the women to assert their authority. She targeted the Congress and the BJP and said their leaders had been projecting themselves as "vikas purush" but on the issue of framing women specific policies, they failed miserably.

“A large number of girls in Gurjarat are anemic, exposing Narender Modi’s claims. The direct cash transfer scheme is impractical as it won’t work for those who don’t have a bank account. The Women Reservation Bill has been laying pending in the parliament due to opposition from these parties”, she said. She added that molestation charges against Asaram and rape cases against ministers indicted that the women needed to carry on their struggle for violence-free society, in which they would have equal rights.Jharna Dass, an MP from Tripura, said despite the fact that many women like UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, leader of opposition in LokSabha Sushma Swaraj, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, West Bangal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee, were at the helm of affairs in the Indian politics, the incidents of exploitation and violence against them had not stopped. “In fact, violence against women is on the rise in the country. It shows that these parties are least bothered about the issues concerning women."

AIDWA vice-president Jagmati Sangwan pulled up the Haryana Government while terming several steps taken by it anti-women. “The NGOs like Apna Ghar kept on exploiting the young girls while the government honoured it. The incidents of rape and honour killings have failed to wake the government from its slumber," she said. AIDWA also honoured seven women, including a rape victim, who struggled in their lives and emerge as winners.

Recruitment of SC/BC candidates a ploy to win their support
Our Correspondent

Jhajjar, October 3
Rajesh Shastri, an RTI activist, said the order to fill backlog of vacancies under the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes categories in public sector undertakings and universities was merely a ploy to woo SCs and BCs before the upcoming parliamentary poll.

While interacting with mediapersons here recently, Shastri said an RTI reply had revealed that like guest teachers, the state government had appointed general category candidates against the posts reserved for SC/BC candidates in several departments on contractual basis. Moreover, old service rules had been replaced with new ones for several posts, he added.

Pointing out the RTI reply, he claimed that around 12,000 reserved posts of master and C&V teachers for SCs/ BCs got removed due to the Right to Education Act and the rationalisation policy.

“The people belonging to the SC and BC categories will not tolerate such a discrimination and would raise their voice against it. We have also decided to constitute two separate teams consisting 21 members to make the people aware of this unfairness,” Shastri added.

Notably, the state government had recently decided to fill the backlog of Class III and Class IV vacancies by taking up0 special measures.

Karnal, October 3
Under the project to save the endangered wild buffalo ('ban bhainsa'), the state animal of Chhattisgarh, is making steady progress and the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) is pinning its hopes on cloning as a viable option for wildlife conservation projects in future.

The Chhattisgarh Forest Department had traced two herds of the endangered wild buffalo at a national park, raising hopes to increase its population and the NDRI that was assigned the task has already implanted the somatic cells taken from the ear of the wild animal.

"The embryo has been produced and successfully implanted using the tested hand-guided technique to clone the wild buffaloe which is hunted for meat and is on the verge of extinction, on the request of the Government of Chhattisgarh," Director, NDRI, Dr AK Srivastav said.

After a full-term pregnancy, the recipient gives birth to an animal that is essentially the identical twin of the genetic donor. If the project succeeds, the same method could also be adopted for increasing the number of other critically endangered species like bison, lion and leopard.

Only a few wild buffalos are left in the Udanti forest of Chhattisgarh and the wild animals are aggressive and do not easily allow us to take body parts samples for cloning and we have to be extremely careful as the success rate in such cases in very low said Dr S K Singla, adding that studies confirm that chromosomes of domestic and wild buffaloes were almost the same.

This is a challenging three-year contract science project to conserve the highly endangered wildlife species. Work on the project has been started and a clone will be prepared by using somatic cells from the ear of the wild animal.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had put this wild buffalo in the Red List or the extremely endangered species as a Schedule I animal under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
