Gurdaspur, September 26
The local bus stand is a picture of neglect. Lack of drinking water, no proper cycle, scooter-stand or car parking is there and blatantly wrong parked buses are the hallmark of the bus stand. This perennial picture of chaos is leaving the tax-paying residents fuming over official’s apathy in providing them with better facilities.

The premises rented out to a contractor by the local Zila Parishad (ZP), is cramped for space following which people who have to board buses have a harrowing time.

The contractor claims he tries to manage the chaos but fails. “I have written many times to the ZP authorities to make arrangements for proper drinking water. However, all my requests have fallen on the deaf ears,”said the contractor.

Despite having the status of district headquarters, there is no depot of the Punjab roadways. There have been numerous instances of daily commuters wanting to lodge complaints, but they can’t do so, as one has to travel the Roadways Depot at Batala, 34 km from here to get their complaints registered.

The ordeal faced by a young principal of a Dinanagar school, Upma Majahan, is just symptomatic of thousands of others who visit the bus stand daily.

“ We have a horrid time in boarding a bus for Dinanagar. There is a rush of students as there are many educational institutions. However, when we come to the bus stand in the morning, we see buses parked in a haphazard manner. That means that we have to waste a lot of time in locating the buses meant for our destination,” she said.

There are over 500 buses that touch the premises daily.

The new site, near the Improvement Trust (Scheme no. 7), where the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had laid the foundation stone last year, has got embroiled in litigation.

Sources reveal that the space in the bus stand could be utilised in a better way provided the 20-odd shopkeepers who have their shops adjacent to the premises make way for the demolishing of their structures. The ZP authorities have relocated them shops inside the bus stand, but citing a court case these shopkeepers refuse to move into the bus stand premises.
