Woman immolates herself in Amritsar

In a shocking incident a woman in her mid thirties committed suicide by immolating herself in a guest house located near the Golden Temple here today evening.

The incident came to light when the guest house staff noticed some foul smell of burning.

When they reached the room and knocked at the door they got no response. The smoke was coming out of the room. They broke open the door only to find the woman dead.

Harjit singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, who reached the spot said the woman introduced herself as Aarti Malik, a resident of Ambala. She told at the reception that her husband would also be reaching in few minutes.

Investigations revealed that the woman arrived at around 5.00 pm while she committed suicide around 9.00 pm. The police found a bottle of petrol, a locker number of an SGPC sarai besides a railway ticket from Ludhiana to Amritsar.

“Though it seems to be a case of suicide, the investigations were under progress. We are trying to contact at the mobile number given in the register at the reception by the victim. But, till now we have got no response,” Harjit Singh said while adding that no suicide no was found from the spot.

Husband slits wife’s throat

A young married woman in Rajasansi area was almost killed by her husband as he tried to slit her throat but she was rescued by the residents and was sent to a hospital.

The victim Mamta (22) did not have cordial relation with her husband Bikka Masih, both residents of Dheedhomal village in Kalanour (Gurdaspur). The couple went to meet their relative at Rajasansi where they had a quarrel.

Sukhdev Singh, SHO Rajasansi police station, said the accused Bikka Masih used to suspect on the character of his wife. It became a bone of contention between the couple who had been living separately for the past couple of months.

He said today Mamta came to Rajasansi to meet her sister while Bikka Singh also reached there. They had a verbal dual there.

Perturbed over this, the accused Bikka Singh slit the throat of the victim with some sharp-edged weapon near Rajasansi cremation ground and fled away after assuming her dead. However, several passer by located her and informed the police which took her to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital here.

“Mamta was saved by the doctors. She is out of danger and narrated the whole incident to the police,” said Sukhdev Singh while adding that a case of attempt to murder has been registered against the accused. He said raids were being conducted to nab the culprit.

Man arrested for rape

Hoshiarpur, September 23
The Hariana police has arrested Gaurav Kumar, son of Davinder Kumar, of Bassi Wajid village under Sections 376, 406, 506 and 120-B of the IPC for raping a married woman.

The police sources said, the victim, hails from Tarn Taran road, Amritsar, stated that she was married with Ravinder Kumar of Bassi Wajid. She was not on good terms with members of her in-laws . Vicky, son of her father-in-law’s brother Rajinder Kumar and his friend Gaurav Kumar used to visit their house. Gaurav Kumar allegedly developed illicit relations with her on the pretext of marrying her. Meanwhile, she became four month pregnant and Gaurav asked her to leave her husband and thereafter, he will marry with her. Later, she divorced her husband for which the latter paid Rs 1.40 lakh to her, as compensation. Gaurav Kumar allegedly took Rs 1.40 lakh, her gold-finger ring, gold earrings. On August 25, Gaurav Kumar took her to Amritsar where he abandoned her. When she contacted him, the latter threatened her with dire consequences if she made any complaint against him.

Man booked

The Chabbewal police has booked Sabbi, son of Dev Raj of Mohalla Sutehri under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC for abducting Shallu Rani, daughter of Ram Lubhaya of Rehli village. Ram Lubhaya alleged that Sabbi had abducted her daughter Shallu on the pretext of marrying her, the police said.

ATM broken

Some miscreants broke opened an ATM machine of PNB bank branch, Mahilpur and stole all the cash laying in it on the night intervening September 21 and September 22.

According to the police sources, Manmohan Singh, branch manager of PNB bank, Mahilpur, stated that he got an SMS regarding discontinuation of services of ATM machine. He along with head cashier, Harbans Lal, immediately rushed to the said ATM counter and found that the ATM machine broken and all the cash lying in it missing. On September 21, there was Rs 5.22 lakh cash lying in the ATM machine. The actual loss has yet to be ascertained.

Mahilpur police has registered a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC in this connection and started investigations.

3 of family booked

The Tanda police has booked Varinder Singh, his father Gurmit Singh and mother Santosh Kumari, all of Baada PS Garhdiwala under Section 498-A of the IPC for torturing and maltreating former's wife Monica, daughter of Shiv Kumar of ward No 4, Miani, for bringing dowry from her parents.

The police said, Monica was married with Varinder Singh on October 18, 2012. Since her marriage the aforesaid accused used to torture and maltreat her for bringing dowry from her parents. When she did not fulfil their demands, they forcibly left her at her parents’ house.

CNI flays killing of Christians in Pak

The Church of North India (CNI) today flayed the dastardly act of killing innocent Christians by planting the bomb in the premises of a Church at Peshawar in Pakistan.

CNI Deputy Moderator Pradeep Kumar Samantaroy, who is also Bishop Diocese of Amritsar, in a communiqué addressed to the Prime Minister, Pakistan, through High Commissioner Pakistan Embassy, held it as gross negligence on the part of the Pakistan government and its apathetic attitude towards the safety of the minorities.

It may be mentioned that the CNI came into existence in 1970 after six denominations came together. These denominations were Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon (Anglican), the United Church of Northern India (Congregationalist and Presbyterian), the Baptist Churches of Northern India (British Baptists), the Church of Brethren in India, which withdrew in 2006, the Methodist Church (British and Australia Conferences) and the Disciples of Christ.

He demanded that the Pakistan government must immediately apprehend the culprits and ensure capital punishment to them, abolition of blasphemy law and ensure safety and security of minorities, including Christians in Pakistan.

He informed that a peace march would be held at Attari tomorrow in which Punjab Minorities Commission Chairman Munawwar Missih would also participate.

“Beti Bachao Diwas” observed

The District Health Department in collaboration with the District level NGOs Coordination Society-UPKAR organised a function at Shivalik Public School to observe “Beti Bachao Divas” on Monday.

DC Aniditta Mitra said the equilibrium in the society could only be maintained by saving the girl child. She exhorted that all sections of the society especially NGOs need to launch sustained concerted efforts to make the people aware about the ill effects of imbalanced sex ratio to bring in a positive change in the mind set of the society. Though, “Nawanshahr Model” for fighting against the evil of female foeticide has been acclaimed at the national level, but the need of the hour is to make the best better, she said. — OC
