Army asks MES employees to vacate quarters

Pathankot, September 16
A potentially volatile situation is developing in the Cantonment area with the Army authorities asking the employees of 15 Military Engineering Service, along with nearly 70 of their family members, to vacate the premises where they have been residing for the last several years. The Army said they were not dislocating the employees but were re-locating them to a safer place. However, this contention of the Army officials is being vehemently denied by the affected employees, who say that they are being ousted because their quarters were located near the Army golf course which the authorities wanted to extend. MES employees are considered to be Defence Civilian Employees and they fear that once they are shifted to their new accommodation, they will come directly under the control of the army. "Once we are shifted to the new quarters, we may well be asked to shift again as the quarters are being controlled by the army and not by the MES. We are being harassed because some senior officers want the boundaries of the golf course extended. Our present quarters are acting as an impediment for some officers to play golf," said an MES employee. Alok Devrani, Garrison Engineer (West), claimed that the shifting had nothing to do with the golf course. "We are offering them an option because the present condition of the quarters where they are now residing has become dilapidated. I do not know why such a hue and cry is being raised over an issue which is so trivial in nature," he said. The MES employees also claim that the army officials had illegally converted the area meant for the 'Army Environment Park and Training' into a sprawling golf course.
