DMC ignores illegal sewer line laid on its land
Dehradun, September 15 Local residents have opposed the sewer line and met officials concerned in both civic bodies but did not get justice. A few persons have got the sewer line laid on the DMC land in the colony using their influence. Anand Kumar, a resident of the Kochar Colony, said, “Initially, we did not realise that the pipeline was being laid for carrying sewage. Later when the matter came to light, we realised that we were misled by those residents, who were behind the sewer line, that the Peyjal Nigam was getting the work done. It was much later that we came to know that the entire work was illegal.” Veena Kumari, another resident of the area, said she had met officials of the DMC and the MDDA over the sewer pipeline issue. She had raised objections that though DMC officials fully knew that the sewer pipeline was being illegally laid on the corporation land they did not take action. MDDA officials were mute over the illegal construction being done in the area as it was out of their purview. A retired Army officer said many Army officials, who had built houses in the colony, were building pressure on the officials of the departments concerned to take swift action in the matter. He drew attention towards the gravity of the matter saying the controversial sewer pipeline was damaged at a few places and sewage was seeping out of it. He said they made the Jal Sansthan to issue a notice to a builder on the issue. Mukhya Nagar Adhikari, DMC, Ashok Kumar said, “The residents of the Kochar Colony, who have got the sewer line laid in the area, have been told in clear terms to dismantle it or else the DMC will take action against them. The way the sewer line is ending in a nullah in an extreme corner of the colony, it can pollute the drinking water pipeline as well as the environment in the area.” |
Rajaji National Park may get tiger reserve status
Dehradun, September 15 The Uttarakhand government recently started taking keen interest in facilitating the tiger reserve status to the Rajaji National Park. But with it still to be notified as a national park, the tiger reserve status has also eluded it. Rajaji Park was not a notified national park and was so far just a wildlife sanctuary. Spread over 744 sq km in Uttarakhand, the Rajaji National Park came into being after amalgamation with three sanctuaries, Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla, way back in 1983 in the memory of famous freedom fighter late C. Rajgopalachari, popularly known as “Rajaji”. There have been constant efforts to get it notified as a national park. Welcoming the development, AK Singh, senior official of WTI, said the notification had rendered Rajaji Park to get a legal status of national park, which will help boost wildlife conservation efforts at the park. Dr Singh said the state government's efforts to get tiger reserve status for Rajaji shortly would also get a tremendous boost due to the development. He said the flow of funds to the park will also increase. Significantly, while the Centre has already given technical approval for Tiger reserve status for Rajaji, the final national park notification for Rajaji will help state plead its case effectively for National Tiger Conservation Authority for getting a tiger reserve status for Rajaji. Uttarakhand so far has just one tiger reserve - Corbett tiger reserve. With tiger population registering an increase at Corbett, there has been a demand among tiger conservationists to explore the possibility of providing a new habitat to spillover tigers at Corbett and a stress is also being laid for strengthening the connecting corridor between Rajaji and Corbett. The notification will also assist Rajaji Park to solve decade-long unresolved issue of Van Gujjar rehabilitation. Illegal felling of trees has also been quite rampant due to thickly populated villages sharing their borders with the park, which will also be effectively curtailed. A paradise for wildlife lovers and nature enthusiasts, Rajaji National Park has presence of elephants, deer, gorals and other wildlife and some tigers too. There have been enormous efforts in recent years to facilitate the growth of tiger population in the park. |
Jwalapur residents resent garbage dumping near colony in ward No. 1
Haridwar, September 15 Notably, garbage from nearby colonies falling in other wards is also being dumped in the area, near the Bakra market, which is adjacent to a residential colony, for the past few months. The residents of ward No. 1 are quite perturbed at the garbage disposal being done just within the residential colony and have warned of agitation route, if in coming days this problem is not solved. Councillor of ward No. 1 Laxmi Devi said Mayor Manoj Garg along with city legislator Madan Kaushik and Jwalapur legislator Chandrasekhar Bhattewala was apprised about the situation but despite assurances nothing had been done till date. “Filth, garbage and plastic material can be seen everywhere in ward No.1 due to dumping of garbage by the civic body workers and residents of colonies falling in ward Nos. 2 and 3. We could understand if garbage of the ward was dumped here, but MC workers and residents of other wards are dumping garbage at this site,” said Laxmi. While councillor from ward No. 2 Nisha Pundir said she had also spoken to the MC authorities and the local people about the problem. “I will raise the issue in the next meeting of the MC. Hopefully, a secluded place for garbage disposal will be found and residents of the affected colony will not have to sea garbage dumped outside their houses,” said Pundir. Mukhya Nagar Adhikari DP Singh said he would consider the matter and hold talks with MC officials and public representatives concerned. Former legislator Ambrish Kumar said if this was the working of the municipal corporation, then the city was better in the erstwhile municipal committee times. Having multiple resources now, the MC should act fast and with a vision. Former councillor Sharfaraz Gaud, who had been raising the issue for a long time, said the civic body was concentrating on posh colonies only and ignoring such colonies where various communities reside. |
Champawat residents rue lack of basic amenities
Pithoragarh, September 15 The residents of Champawat feel cheated as they believe that public representatives did not work for the development of the district after its formation on September 15, 1997, said Dinesh Pandey, local a journalist from Champawat. “We are living in dark. There is scarcity of potable water. The district lacks the health and education facilities…Out of 611 hamlets in the district, residents of 517 villages still depend on nullahs for the drinking water. There are no government hospitals and more than half the number of villages still remain to be connected with roads,” he said. Champawat district has seen as many as 16 District Magistrates since its formation, but even they couldn’t do much to improve the facilities in the area. “As soon as they understood the area, they were transferred,” Pandey added. The residents allege that the remote parts of the district, like Talladesh, Tamli, Gumdesh Pati and Barakot are still without roads and electricity. “Some long pending motorable roads, like the one from Sukhidhank to Danda and Minar villages that had been proposed since the days when Uttarakhand was still a part of the Uttar Pradesh, are still awaiting the forest clearance,” Pandey said, adding that the local administration has done nothing in this regard. |
