On the eve of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, militants carried out two deadly attacks here in a span of 30 minutes, killing eight soldiers and injuring over 13 others.

Fresh rains, landslips and inclement weather hampered the rescue operations by air and road in the flood-ravaged Uttarakhand today with around 1,000 stranded pilgrims being evacuated.

Victims’ jewellery missing, shrine donation boxes empty
Kedarnath, June 24
As the unprecedented rains turned Kedarnath into a ghost town with bodies strewn all over, a ‘gold rush’ in the holy town is sending shivers down the spine. Cash and gold offerings at the shrine are missing and so is personal jewellery, including anklets and gold bangles, of several of the deceased.

B’desh officials’ Assam visit sparks protests
Guwahati, June 24
A visit by a team of revenue officials from Bangladesh to Hatsingrimari Revenue Circle in bordering Dhubri district of Assam to carry out ‘inspection of border pillars’ with their counterparts in Assam (India), has sparked a series of protects in Assam because of the apprehension that it could be the beginning of the process to hand over Assam’s land to Bangladesh as per the land-swap pact inked by both the countries during the last Dhaka visit of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 6 last year.

A silver gilt dinner (gold plated silver) service commissioned by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala is being offered for sale by Christie's auctioneers in London with an estimated price of £1million to £1.5 million. Bhupinder Singh commissioned the dinner service — comprising 200 dinner plates, smaller plates and dishes — to commemorate the February 1922 Patiala visit of Edward, the Prince of Wales.
