Engineer girl decides not to marry 'dowry-seeker' boy
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, January 27
A young software engineer girl from Bareilly, who tried to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills in the SSP office on Thursday when the boy, who was to marry her on February 14, refused to do so, also shelved the plan of marrying him.

She said the police was delaying the case, whereas she wanted timely justice. She withdrew her complaint and return to her town saying that she would first talk to her family members about registering a case against the boy, Gopal Gupta, who is an officer in the Merchant Navy and lives with his parent in the Panditwari area of town, has been asked not to leave the town for the time being.

The girl said she was no longer interested in marrying a boy who demanded dowry from her but she wanted to teach him a lesson so that he could not play with any other girl’s life. She blamed Gupta and his family of demanding one kg gold jewellery in dowry from her, something which her family could not afford. According to her, on not getting his demand fulfilled, he announced of calling off the marriage, which was to take place on February 14. He also did not give any satisfactory explanation for the turnaround.

Distraught over getting disappointed, she said the Guptas had been making excuses for some time to push her to break the alliance. He made her to leave her job as software engineer in Gurgaon saying that women in his families did not do jobs. The eldest among four sibling girls in the family and not having a father, she finds herself at cross-road after leaving the job. The family also lost lots of money in bookings and paying advance for hotel and other arrangements for marriage.

The betrothal ceremony was to take place on February 5.

The alliance was struck through a website and facilitated by her paternal aunt in August last year. She got closer to the boy emotionally after having mobile conversation for hours every day.

Snapping the alliance on a fine day all of a sudden was too shocking and incomprehensible to her. She came alone from Bareilly to persuade boy and his family but was rebuffed. Then she approached the Women Helpline, who called Gupta.

Helpline in charge said the boy gave flimsy reasons for breaking the alliance such as that the girl made demands of wearing particular kind of lehnga on her wedding day. Gupta left no room for rapproachement saying that he would commit suicide if pressured to marry the girl.

Shaken with the disappointment, the girl gulped down sleeping pills and was rushed to Doon Hospital. After getting recuperated, she returned to the SSP office on Friday and said she wanted to die to draw attention and get justice the way it happened in the case of the rape victim in Delhi.

She also pulled up the police for unnecessarily stretching her case and later withdrew her complaint and went back home.

Setting an Example

The Bareilly girl was no longer interested in marrying a boy who demanded dowry from her but she wanted to teach him a lesson so that he could not play with the life of any other girl. She accused Gupta and his family of demanding one kg gold jewellery in dowry from her, something which her family could not afford. According to her, on not getting his demand fulfilled, he announced of calling off the marriage, which was to take place on February 14.
