Several cases of illegal cutting of trees come to light
Haridwar, January 25 Just in 40 days, the Horticulture Department has given permission to cut 70 trees in Haridwar alone, while more than 140 fruit trees have been reportedly illegally cut to pave way for plotting of land by land mafia. Such is the trade going on here that gardens of fruit trees are being axed to pave way for commercial buildings, complexes and plots as now it is easy to get permission from Horticulture Department officers. The land mafia in the name of cutting trees are axing rows of trees, with department officials not making it a point to inspect the area where permission was given. Call it laxity or a nexus, it seems it is boom time for land mafia as now they are felling trees on agricultural land in large numbers, even on areas near the National Highway. At a colony near Gurukul Kangri University on NH-58, two dozen-odd trees were illegally logged in a few hours in a horticulture garden, with plotting also being done the very next day. This case itself points to the daring work of land mafia as well as their intentions of carving saleable plots on the land where green fruit trees existed. Similarly, at Kankhal 45 mango trees have been axed at Gurbaksh Vihar illegally by the land mafia. Permission was sought from the Horticulture Department for pruning, and in just one night, 40-odd trees were logged and ferried away, with only leaves remaining on the vacant garden. The Horticulture Department officers initially denied the incident had taken place, trying to cover it up. But after local people’s outburst, they are trying to calm them down by assuring of having a probe in this regard. Talking to TNS, District Horticulture Officer Sanjay Shrivastav said that such an incident had come to his knowledge and a probe was going on. If any one was found involved from his department, a case will be registered against him. In Jagjeetpur village, the Horticulture Department has registered a case against the mango garden owner at Kankhal police station, who logged more than four dozen trees without permission. It has also come o light that the intention of the owner was to cut all the remaining 100-odd trees to pave way for commercial buildings. RTI activst JP Badoni revealed that a whole nexus between land builders and quarrying mafia was going on in Haridwar with even department employees involved in this illegal nexus, which is hell-bent on getting rid of the green cover to rake in money. |
Qureshi for good infrastructure in state
Dehradun, January 25 In his address, the Governor said: "We will have to ensure that the facilities of potable water, toilets and schools are available in the remote areas of the state. In order to transform our young population into an educated and skilled workforce, several changes need to be made in the higher education system," he said. He further said the efforts to expand the medical facilities available in the state were continuing but making medical facilities and services available in the far-off hill areas were still a challenge which had to be met by making up for the shortage of doctors and nurses in hospitals." "The dedication, sincerity and hard work of women folk are well-known. They have set an example before the world by their love for nature and the environment. Life of women in the rural hill areas of the state is very difficult. To change this, their education and means of making them self-dependent need to be improved. We will have to ensure that they have a share in the fruits of development. Only then can we think of women empowerment. It is hoped that a positive change will come about due to the 50 per cent reservation for women for the post of sarpanch in Van Panchayats," he said. He also appealed to the media to start a widespread campaign condemning practice of female foeticide. "An Urdu academy and a Haj committee have been constituted in the state. I have directed the state government to get the Wakf property surveyed by a retired District Judge or High Court Judge. The entire property which belongs to the Wakf Board should be placed in its records and all illegal occupants should be strictly dealt with so that the Wakf property can be used for charitable purpose which is also a religious duty," the Governor said. — TNS |

GMVN in control of Auli adventure sports activity
Dehradun, January 25 during SAF winter games had become quite contentious as this was the time when GMVN was hoping to earn big revenue during the event. GMVN is taking charge at such a time when Auli adventure activities are suffering setbacks from many angles. Managing Director, GMVN, Pankaj Kumar Pandey said they could not hold winter games due to scant snowfall in the region. Another big challenge for the corporation would be to make the artificial lake, built to make artificial snow, functional. The 10 km pipeline which was laid from Boda Taal to the 400 metre artificial lake has got damaged at several places. Due to this, the lake has become almost dry. During rainy season, a lot of mud got deposited in the lake. Fortunately, the lake is safe. Had the lake been in good position, the GMVN could create artificial snow and hold winter games and sports. Not only the lake, but many out of 35 electric poles installed to electrify the lake, too, have developed snags. The transmission line has snapped at various spots. The rest houses have got seepage problem as well. GMVN has asked for funds from the Tourism Ministry to do the needful. About 90 per cent work on fabrication of ice-skating rink has been completed. For the rest of the work, the funds have not been released as yet. The ropeway from Joshimath to Auli has not been operated since February 2011 though tenders for the repair of the ropeway had been invited. Without ropeway, the TRHs had been earning up to Rs 2 lakh a month in peak season. The addition of ropeway would certainly work wonders. Unless these discrepancies are removed, the GMVN would not
be able to earn much from Auli. |
