Ahead of R-Day, ‘Clean Doon’ campaign begins
Dehradun January 21 The drive was conducted with the assistance of sanitation workers of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) and 2700 volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Civil Defence under the guidance of four zonal administrative officers. The officials and employees of the Information Department and the Education Department, including the principles and teaching faculty of various schools, also contributed to the drive. The volunteers were provided white and black cloth bags by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority while the vehicles used to carry these bags to Parade Ground were provided by the DMC. Around 958 white bags full of polythene collected from the city were later piled up at Parade Ground from where these would be sent for recycling while 708 black bags filled with garbage were sent to trenching grounds. NSS volunteers and children of various schools held rallies in their respective wards. Pamphlets were also distributed among public to disseminate information regarding harmful effects of polythene. The drive began from ward number 60, Kolagarh. District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam present at Kolagarh during the drive urged schoolchildren and NSS volunteers of Hariawala to set an example by clearing their area of polythene bags. He also seized polythene bags from the vegetable sellers of the locality and inspected ration shops as well. The DM also visited Rajender Nagar, Kishan Nagar, Bindal, Connaught Place and Rajpur Road. The city was divided into four zones with each zone covering 15 wards under the campaign. Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Jharna Kamthan, Archana Geharwar, Joint Magistrate Ranjana Verma and City Magistrate Harak Singh Rawat were entrusted the responsibility of each zone. The DM later said the shopkeepers would be made to put up garbage container after a gap of every five shops. The garbage from these containers would be collected by the DMC. He also directed to place dustbins on vacant land or on road sides in the residential localities. He said the owners of the vacant land would also be made to erect surrounding wall around their plots to prevent the misuse of such land as dumping ground for garbage by the neighbours. Archana Geharwar said the drive undertaken in view of Republic Day would be carried out next month as well. She said the public gave all support to the drive. Mayor Vinod Chamoli said the Chief Minister, who announced the prohibition of use of polythene bags, must enforce it strictly by framing a law over it. He said the state government must learn from the Himachal Pradesh government which had been successful in banning polythene bags in their state. He rued that such drives undertaken by the DMC in the past proved unsuccessful due to uncooperative attitude of the state government. He, however, assured full cooperation to the district administration to carry such
drives in future. |

38 per cent women found anaemic in Doon Hospital
Dehradun, January 21 Similarly, newborn screening carried under the same project found 19 newborn out of a total of 1,405 with birth defects. Out of the 2,026 screened for anaemia and thalassaemia, 670 (33.1 percent) had mild anaemia, 87 moderate (4.3 per cent) and 38 per cent were completely anaemic. Similarly, a total of three thalassaemic cases were detected during the screening. During the physical examination of 1,405 newborn, five babies were found to have congenital heart diseases, four with hypothyroidism and six with confirmed congenital deficiency. The ABDP project is supported by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and is under way at Doon Hospital. “Young girls were not aware about consuming a nutritious diet and were even ignorant about eating iron reach diet,” said Dr Kiran Bisht, in charge of
the project. As anaemia is one of the reasons responsible for birth defects, the project envisaged the screening of young girls, so that corrective measures could be adopted and young girls encouraged to improve their diet when still in their adolescent years. The focus of the programmes is also on newborn screening of children born at District Women Hospital to save newborn babies from neonatal disorders. The screening tests are being done free of cost. The blood samples are collected from the baby within 24 hours of delivery. The blood is allowed to dry on a piece of absorbent paper and then sent to a laboratory
for testing, "Metabolic and such other genetic disorders impair an infant's normal physical and mental development. Most of these disorders are not apparent at birth. By the time the symptoms appear, the problem would have become almost irreversible. Through this programme, we can detect these disorders and can provide early treatment,” said Dr Bisht. The newborn screening was carried for six birth disorders. The tests are expected to get more refined once Doon Hospital procures the bio radical variant machine on lease basis from a private company - National Scientific Promoters. The Hospital will only have to pay for
the CMC. |
Long Live Pindar Ganga day observed
Dehradun, January 21 The inhabitants took holy water from the Pindar Ganga at Panchprayag and staged a rally in Dewal Market. According to Vimal Bhai of the Matu Jansanghatan, January 20 this year has been observed as “Long Live Pindar Ganga” day as it was on this day last year that a false public hearing was conducted by the dam construction company. After the rally, at a public meeting held on the occasion Dinesh Mishra pledged to continue with the agitation and oppose tooth and nail any move to obstruct the flow of the Pindar. “The Pindar river is our life and culture and disturbance to its flow will be opposed”, Mishra asserted. Mahipal Singh Kathait, Shobhan Singh Khatri and Jasoda Devi also addressed the gathering. The agitation against the proposed Devsari hydroelectric project in the Pinder-Ganga Valley had been going on for quite some time. The Pinder Ganga is the only free-flowing tributary of the Ganga river. |
Buses to have reserved seat for women
Dehradun January 21 Khurana has also launched "Ladies Special" shared auto, Vikram service, on three routes Rajpur, Dharampur and Rispana in the city. Six Vikram will operate on each of these routes daily where only women commuters will be permitted to sit. A lady constable will also present in each of these Vikrams to ensure compliance of the regulation and safety for women. Vikrams are always over-packed with commuters where women often face harassment from male commuters. The special service of six Vikrams on each of these routes in the Vikrams will definitely give relief to the women commuters, though reservation of only one seat in the buses is definitely too less in that respect. Unlike metro cities like Delhi where atleast six to eight seats are reserved for women in the local transports, mere one seat in buses in the city will not serve much purpose. However, SSP indicated that it was merely beginning in the right direction. It gives hope that things will improve further with passage of time. |

6 students sent to jail for assaulting BSP council member
Mussoorie, January 21 The police has also seized Bolero on which the students were travelling. It has also found that the vehicle belonged to the city Congress committee district vice-president, Haridwar, indicating that some students in the vehicle might be related to him. However, the incident has raised several serious questions of the safety of women on the Mussoorie-Dhanaulti road which has seen influx of tourists due to the heavy snowfall in the adjoining area. Some residents are of the view that most of the vehicles are not able to inch forward towards Dhanaulti from Buraskhanda due to the presence of heavy snow forcing tourists to leave their vehicles and tread on foot thus risking unruly behaviour from the miscreants due to inadequate security arrangements here. The residents rued the fact that due to the absence of proper police piquets at Buraskhanda, the miscreants have a field day
resulting in giving rise to such incidents which on many occasions go unreported. Upendar Singh, a shopkeeper from the area, said the part below the road at Buraskhanda falls under the purview of the revenue police under Dhanaulti division while the area above the road is under the Mussoorie police leading to the confusion on who should man the area. Police station BS Rawat, police station in charge, Mussoorie, said he had directed his subordinates deployed at various piquets to remain alert to such incidents and act speedily. |
