He assured full cooperation with the police team that has been directed by Haridwar district police chief Arun Mohan Joshi to probe into this matter in which Batra supporters allegedly illegally broke the locks of the residence and took it in their possession. Batra also cited official permission letter signed by Uttarakhand Irrigation Minister Yashpal Arya, who had directed Chief Engineer, Irrigation Department, to instantly vacant Type-4 house no A-15, Left Canal, for the legislator. Notably, Irrigation Department Executive Engineer LR Arya had tried to lodge a complaint at the Civil Lines police station on January 6, regarding illegal possession of the Irrigation Department residence by supporters of Pradeep Batra. Talking to TNS, Circle Officer, Roorkee, Jodh Ram Joshi, said that as per directives of SSP Joshi, investigations will be carried out and senior Inspector PP Singh has been appointed as investigative officer in this case. CO Joshi added that as PP Singh was on leave for three days, and though the probe had been initiated, it would be carried out shortly. Separated from family, elephant calf dies
Haridwar, January 17
The female calf, which was named Rani, was brought to the Chilla range on January 15 from the Laldhang range in the Lansdowne forest division, where it had got separated from its family. This led to the deterioration in the health of the calf which had been deprived of mother’s care. Under the direction of Director, Rajaji National Park, PS Subuddhi, Chilla park officials brought the calf from the Laldhang forest range in Lansdowne and since then it was being taken care off. As the Chilla range has two domestic elephants named Radha and Rangeeli, it was deemed that the calf would get a suitable environment and would be under the supervision of wildlife experts and doctors. Chilla Ranger DP Uniyal said for the past few days the elephant calf’s health was deteriorating as it was not able to move its legs easily, though it was being fed milk and a separate mud block had been created for it. Wildlife Institute experts said a calf, which gets separated from its family, did not survive easily. In this case and the cold climatic conditions also affected its health. ‘Make bureaucrat in charge of urban development programme’
Dehradun, January 17 The UUSIDP, that has been overseeing the implementation of Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded projects under phase I, has been in the firing line as the water augmentation and sewerage improvement projects under way in the thickly populated areas of Dehradun have been delayed, and Opposition BJP leaders, including Harbans Kapoor, have been critical of the pace and quality of work. While the phase I has been given an extension for two years, under phase II the Asian Development Bank is expected to fund more projects in Dehradun, Nainital, Roorkee, Haldwani and Ramnagar. In the status report, the Director of UUSIDP, Radhika Jha, has suggested that the government should make a senior bureaucrat in charge as periodic negotiations have to be carried with the officials of Asian Development Bank (ADB). After the road restoration work being carried under ADB- funded project was met with criticism, the UUSIDP head had asked the government to hand it over to the Department of Public Works but it failed to do so. Further, lack of coordination at the level of the PWD and the Department of Forests is one of the reasons citied for delays, cost and technical variation. After signing the agreement in 2008, awarding of projects and work took off in 2010-2011. The present project director took up the responsibility in 2011. Beside funding the water augmentation and sewerage-laying projects in Dehradun, under ADB the slum survey and preparation of master plans for towns and cities of Uttarakhand is also under way. Under phase I, Rs 212 crore has been utilised for laying of water pipes, sewerage pipes and road restoration work, carrying of survey of slums etc. Officials say as the works were started late, Uttarakhand did not attract efficient contractors. “The sub-letting of contracts by the nominated contractors, too, has resulted in poor quality of work. The expectations of people are high but the departments are not willing to change,” said a senior official. |
