Agarkar, Tare hit tons as Mumbai prosper
M.S.Unnikrishnan/TNS
New Delhi, January 17 The match was once again shortened due to poor light and rain, but nothing seemed to deter Agarkar and Tare from pursuing their determined agenda of taking the Mumbai total to a commanding position. Today, the match started 45 minutes late due to poor light, there was a ten-minute hold up due to rain before fading light forced the early end of play at 4.10 p.m. Yesterday also, the match started half an hour late because of a wet ground, and ended early due to poor light. Altogether, 380 minutes’ of play has been lost due to the vagaries of the weather. Mumbai, resuming at 199 for 6, added 181 in 65 overs, to uncork the depth in their batting. Tare, who was unbeaten on 26 overnight, was the first to race to the three-figure mark when he glided Nakul Verma to the third man boundary. His hundred came off 297 balls, in 414 minutes with 16 fours. Agarkar, who was on 99 then, followed suit when he stole a single off left-arm spinner Avishek Sinha to complete his 100 (216b, 294m , 12x4). Tare was batting on 108 and Agarkar was going strong at 113 (14x4) at close. Tare hit his second Ranji ton of the season while it was Agarkar’s first after he made a 100 against HP in the 2009-2010 season. Tare has been in raging form this season, and the unbroken 211-run seventh-wicket partnership between him and Agarkar has helped Mumbai tighten the hold over Services. Services had promised much when they reduced 38-time champions Mumbai to 3 for 23 yesterday, but Sachin Tendulkar and Abhishek Nayar put on an 81-run stand to pull them out of the rut, to give them a fresh lifeline, which was fully seized by Tare and Agarkar. Services were greatly handicapped when their strike bowler and leading wicket-taker Suraj Yadav had to go out with a twisted ankle after bowling just four overs in the morning after the new ball was taken. And Mumbai took full advantage of Suraj’s absence to garner runs in a slow and steady manner. Wicket-keeper-batsmanTare played with caution and circumspection, as he seemed to be in hurry to get the century. He has served the Mumbai cause admirably this season, batting at different slots, including as an opener in five matches, before coming down to the sixth position here. After reaching the 100, Agarkar indulged in some lusty knocks to race past his young colleague, though both ensured that they did not go for risky shots and remained unbeaten in the end. Jackson moonwalks to 107, Saurashtra post 477 vs Punjab
Rajkot, January 17 In reply to Saurashtra, Punjab made a steady start to reach 41 for no loss at stumps with Jiwanjot Singh unbeaten on 11 and Ravi Inder Singh on 30. Earlier, resuming at an overnight score of 274 for five, Saurashtra added another 203 runs before getting all out. Yesterday's unbeaten pair of Jackson and Kamlesh Makwana, resuming on 70 and 13, respectively, got their team off to a good start today. Their sixth wicket stand yielded 106 runs before Siddharth Kaul removed Jackson for a 172-ball 107, studded with 16 boundaries and a six. This was Jackson's third century of the season. Departure of Jackson brought Vishal Joshi to the crease and he along with Makwana frustrated the visiting team's bowlers. The duo added 91 runs for the seventh wicket. Leg spinner Sarabjit Ladda provided the breakthrough by getting rid of Makwana. He then accounted for two more wickets of Jaydev Unadkat (9) and Dharmendra Jadeja (17) to push Saurashtra on to the backfoot. Makwana's patient 85 came off 216 balls and was laced with 12 hits to the fence. Joshi remained stranded on 55 when veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh removed the last man Siddharth Trivedi, who failed to open his account after facing seven balls. For Punjab, Kaul and Ladda were the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets each conceding 119 and 109 runs, respectively. Harbhajan took two wickets by giving away 102 runs. Punjab openers, Ravi and Jiwanjot, managed to survive the day. While Jiwanjot got a life when a bat and pad catch was put down by Jackson at silly point off Makwana, Ravi, who played watchfully, hit some big shots when spinner Dharmendra Jadeja was brought into the attack. — PTI Scoreboard Saurashtra (overnight 274/5) Jackson b S Kaul 107 Vasavada lbw b Kohli 8 Makvana c Inder b Ladda 85 Joshi not out 55 Unadkat c Sandeep b Ladda 9 Jadeja c U Kaul b Ladda 17 Trivedi c U Kaul b Harbhajan 0 Extras: (b 18, lb 7, w 2, nb 7) 34 Total (all out; 155 overs) 477 Fall of wickets: 1-6, 2-58, 3-150, 4-194, 5-229, 6-335, 7-426, 8-444, 9-476 Bowling Sandeep 21 6 60 0 S Kaul 31 4 119 3 Amitoze 4 0 20 0 Harbhajan 37 6 102 2 Ladda 41 9 109 3 Bipul 11 4 12 1 Kohli 10 0 30 1 Punjab Jiwanjot batting 11 Ravi Inder batting 30 Extras: 0 Total (0 wkt; 17 overs) 41 Bowling Unadkat 6 3 7 0 Trivedi 4 3 4 0 Jadeja 5 1 29 0 Makvana 2 1 1 0 |
All eyes on Dhoni as Indian team practises in Ranchi
Ranchi, January 17 Sporting a big smile, Dhoni was the first to enter the HEC International Cricket Stadium ahead of the team bus and exchanged pleasantries with JSCA (Jharkhand State Cricket Association) officials. He took a stroll even as his other teammates joined him for a net session. Although the players stayed away from the rigours of nets, coach Duncan Fletcher was seen knocking a few balls. Indians had an good catching practice session and the football game, which usually marks the start of their net session, took place at the end today as Yuvraj Singh joined them late at the ground. England, meanwhile, cancelled their scheduled afternoon practice today. The five-match ODI series is currently levelled at 1-1. — PTI |
Ranchi, January 17 This will be the first international match at the newly-built Jharkhand State Cricket Association stadium which will be inaugurated tomorrow by the state governor Syed Ahmed. A flat wicket, a quick outfield coupled with a small ground make it a typical Rajkot-like condition that saw in excess of 600 runs being scored in the first ODI. "People want plenty of runs for one-day cricket and the wicket out here will live up to it. Chances are that we might see runs at a rate of six-seven," local curator Basudeb Site said, indicating another 300-plus total on the cards. With winter almost gone in these parts, dew would not be a worry, he added. The ground last hosted Jharkhand's home match against HP in the Ranji Trophy from November 24-27, 2012.The match saw four centuries from both the teams as the pitch eased up with Himachal Pradesh taking a first innings lead. — PTI |
Sis to convey school’s wishes to MSD
Ranchi, January 17 The Jawahar Vidya Mandir, with more than 5,000 students and 225 teaching staff, will send messages through Dhoni's sister Jayanti Gupta, who incidentally is a primary teacher in the same school. "Unfortunately, with the huge demand of tickets, most of us would not make it to the ground (on January 19). But we will make sure that our good wishes reach Dhoni through his sister," principal DR Singh said. "We are really proud of this moment. Our school boy has made the whole country proud. So it's a big moment when he is going to play here. I'm sure Dhoni would do well to win it for India," Singh added. India will take on England in the third match on Saturday. — PTI |
IOC strips Armstrong of Oly medal
London, January 17 Two officials said the IOC sent a letter to Armstrong on Wednesday night asking him to return the medal. The move came after the International Olympic Committee was notified by cycling’s governing body that Armstrong had not appealed the decision to disqualify him. The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the decision hasn’t been announced. The IOC executive board discussed revoking the medal last month, but delayed a decision until cycling body UCI formally notified Armstrong he had been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and all results since 1998. He then had 21 days to appeal. Now that the deadline has expired, the IOC decided to take the medal away. The letter to Armstrong was also sent to the U.S. Olympic Committee. In August, the IOC stripped Tyler Hamilton, of his time-trial gold medal from the Athens Olympics after he admitted to doping. — Agencies |
Saina sails into quarters, Kashyap crashes out
Kuala Lumpur, January 17 The 22-year-old Saina, who was given the top billing in the tournament, did not break much sweat as she brushed aside Pui Yin Yip 21-12 21-9 in a lop-sided women’s singles match that lasted only half an hour. The Olympic bronze medallist Indian will next take on Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the quarterfinals at the National Sports Complex. Saina has never faced-off with the world number 33 Japanese shuttler, who beat Indonesian Lindaweni Fanetri 21-13 21-13 in another match. However, India’s top male shuttler, Parupalli Kashyap went down fighting to sixth seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark 17-21 14-21 in the second round of the men’s singles event. The Olympic quarter-finalist, Kashyap, who also jumped one spot to crack the world number 10 bracket, however, could not reach the quarterfinals as he struggled with his right leg against Danish Jan Jorgensen, following a muscle pull suffered yesterday in the first round. Saina, who had reached her career best world no. 2 in December 2010 for the first time, was lagging behind initially but she rode on her 12 smash winners to tame Pui Yin Yip, who played well at the nets. In the first game, she was lagging 2-6 behind but the Indian caught up with her rival at 9-9 and then did not give any chance to the Hong Kong girl to recover. In the second game, Saina was more ruthless as she reeled off six straight points to create a huge gulf, which Pui Yin Yip could never bridge. Kashyap started well in the first set and was up to the Danish challenge. Both were tied at 11 each. But smart play from the 25-year0old Danish helped him bag the first set 21-17. — PTI |

Sunscreen, icepacks keep Fed, Serena going
Melbourne, January 17 Sunscreen and icepacks were the order of the day on Thursday as temperatures hit 40 degrees Celsius in the late afternoon but 31-year-old Federer was coolness personified in the early evening as he dismissed Nikolay Davydenko 6-3 6-4 6-4. Third seed Williams, also 31, kept her time on court to a minimum as she swept aside Garbine Muguruza 6-2 6-0 before Andy Murray, her counterpart in the men’s draw, clinically despatched Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-2 6-2 6-4. Victoria Azarenka, 23, proceeded easily enough in the relative cool of the morning with a 6-1 6-0 thrashing of Greek Eleni Daniilidou. Federer, chasing an 18th major title here, will next face 20-year-old Bernard Tomic and the Swiss, who needed a fraction under two hours to beat Davydenko, was quick to warn the Australian that he was probably fitter than 10 years ago. Seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame Japan’s Go Soeda 6-3 7-6 6-3 and was joined in the third round by fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who beat Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-3 6-2 6-2. Gael Monfils also progressed but only after double-faulting on four successive match points before finally clinching a 7-6 4-6 0-6 6-1 8-6 victory over Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan. Veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm, the women’s world number 100, is fast becoming a cult hero at Melbourne Park and she continued her fairytale run with a 6-2 7-5 win over Israel’s Shahar Peer. — Reuters
Paes-Stepanek knocked out

Chandigarh, January 17 Looking for that elusive win, the Punjab side came out all guns blazing against the Wizards but their inability to convert the four penalty corners and a stroke of bad luck cost the Jamie Dwyer led side dearly. With both teams locked at 1-1, an error from Warrior's goalkeeper Jaap Stockmann handed the lead to the Wizards in the 58th minute and the visitors ensured that there were no last minute hiccups. Stockmann inadvertently directed a hit of Wizards' skipper V R Raghunath into his own goal. Earlier, Jeroen Hertzberger had put the Wizards ahead in the 17th minute but Dwyer got his team back. — TNS |
