Election to the post of president Advocate threatens to move court Tribune News Service
Dehradun, January 22 Tomar, who also participated, had claimed of getting maximum votes 9 in comparison to 8 votes received by Amarpal in the election. He said he would move High Court against the decision. Tomar said among the three candidates, including him, Amarpal and Surender Mittal, who stood for the election, he got 8 votes, Amarpal 6 votes and Mittal 3 votes in the first round. After elimination of Mittal from the contest for getting least number of votes, his votes got divided among other candidates, whereby Tomar got one extra vote and Amarpal got two votes. In this way, he said, his tally increased to 9, Amarpal’s votes also increased to 8. Despite the fact that he was leading, he said Chauhan and election officer Vijay Singh along with Amarpal deliberately declared his two votes invalid without giving any reason. Without paying heed to his objections in the matter, he alleged the election officer declared Amarpal winner. He said Chauhan and his supporters tried to tear the ballot papers. Razia Begh said Chauhan and the election officer offended the rulings given under election rules of BCU, according to which the votes which were declared invalid had been listed valid in the rule book. She said Chauhan initially wanted to appoint Advocate General as president of BCU and had suggested the participants to elect him by giving their votes by raising hands. Begh and Tomar refused from doing so and insisted on following the election procedure. They went to the High Court on December 15 on the matter, which decreed that election dates must be announced within two days. After that nomination dates were announced for January 10 and election for January 19. Chauhan in his defence said he had no role to play in the entire election procedure and it was the election officer who discharged his duties in the matter. He objected to the manner in which Begh and Tomar addressed the press, saying it was against the rule and he would file a case against them for this. He said they could have placed their objections in the House or before the secretary and at the most file petition in the High Court for this. |

Dehradun, January 22 In Abhishek Tower, 14 shops were found built in the basement area, which is meant for parking space. Despite the notice, these shops were not dismantled. Similar was the situation in Baburam complex, where shops were built in the parking lot. In the city, where MDDA had stirred a drive against those shopping complexes which had either not provided parking spaces or misused the spaces for some other purposes, these two shopping complexes had preferred not to do the needful and faced the ire of the authority. Many of the 125 shopkeepers who run their outlets in the Abhishek Tower complex were seen arguing with the team for sealing the entire premises. Similarly, some 25 shops on first floor and hostel on the second and third floors of Baburam complex were sealed where after mild opposition, the team sealed the premises. Two other premises, a building and ICICI bank, were not sealed after the proprietors arranged for parking space in the basement. |

‘Corbett's Legacy’ — a tribute to Jim Corbett, FW Champion
Dehradun, January 22 Bedi brothers have produced the film for the Uttarakhand Forest Department with the help of the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority fund to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the Corbett National Park. The film, along with an exhibition displayed at Dhikala, narrates the early history of the Corbett National Park and aims to increase interest about the Corbett National Park's rich heritage. The film will go a long way in generating awareness among thousands of tourists visiting the Corbett National Park about these remarkable men, Jim Corbett, hunter, naturalist, photographer and writer and FW Champion, forester, writer and photographer, and their globally famous books that continue to inspire young people towards conservation. Jim Corbett and FW Champion were friends who thought of tiger conservation way back in 1930s almost 40 years before the launch of Project Tiger by the Union Government. Jim Corbett was passionate about tigers and deeply concerned about their fate and rapid loss of their habitat. Champion was an Indian Forest Service officer who served for 25 years in the Forest Department till India gained Independence in 1947. He was posted as the Deputy Conservator of Forests in the Kalagarh Forest Division after the formation of Corbett National Park. Champion's pool situated near Sarpduli Forest Rest House is named after him. The then Governor of United Province Sir Malcolm Hailey's fore-sightedness and efforts by Jim Corbett and FW Champion resulted in the formation of the Hailey National Park on August 8, 1936. At the time of its formation, it was India's first national park. Together, they dreamt of making it as one of the foremost national parks of the world. The national park was renamed as Corbett National Park in 1957 as homage to Jim Corbett after his death in Kenya. This beautifully crafted film by the Bedis follows Jim Corbett's life illustrating some significant events using archival footage and stills. It also touches upon the role of FW Champion in pioneering wildlife photography. The film attempts to document and preserve rare archival footage shot by Jim Corbett and FW Champion in Nainital, Kaladhungi, Lansdowne and the Corbett National Park. This footage was obtained from the British Museum of Natural History and the British Film Institute during the research carried out under the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Wildlife Institute of India's "Collaborative Project on Development of Interpretive Facilities in Corbett National Park". With nine hours of disorganised silent material, it was a challenge for the Bedis to sort out the footage, identify and edit it and enrich it by adding natural sounds and music along with a commentary to convey a story. Tom Alter's deep knowledge of Jim Corbett's writings and philosophy and 50 years of long association with the Corbett Park as a tourist comes alive in the narration and presentation of the film. In the first half of the film, the Corbett's famous hunt of man-eating tigers have been reconstructed to give viewers some idea of the ugly and dangerous situation Jim had to face to eliminate man-eaters bringing to an end the misery and fear faced by the village folk. The film beautifully reconstructs the Corbett's shooting of big tiger, The Bachelor of Powalgarh, which measured 10ft- 7inches and was not a man-eater. Jim turned to his cine camera to record magnificent cats on film. With his passion, Jim Corbett could record seven tigers on cattle carcass in the Baur river, including a white tigress. One of the climaxes of the film is the big shikar by Lord Linlithgow, Viceroy of India, during 1936 to 1942 that was filmed by Jim Corbett himself. The second half of the film deals with the rich wildlife and sheer beauty of the Corbett National Park - a paradise of nature situated in Uttarakhand in the foothills of the Himalayas. Bedi brothers love Corbett and have been visiting it ever since they were children. With their cinematic skills, they have beautifully captured the diverse habitats, fauna and flora of the Corbett. They have been extremely lucky to film tiger mating and three week-old cubs following their mother, shot for the first time in Corbett and film Ramganga landscape from hot air balloon. |
DM, SSP review civic amenities of Mussoorie
Mussoorie, January 22 BVR Purushottam, while purusing through the agenda, was astounded at the fact that same problems such as parking, encroachments, drinking water supply etc cited today also figured when he was the vice chairman of the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) a few years back. The public dignitaries such as MC president OP Uniyal, former MC president Manmohan Singh Mall, former MLA Mussoorie Jot Singh Gunsola and members from the Hotels' Association Sandeep Sahni, RN Mathur and Ajay Bhargav, attending the meeting, rued the fact that despite several senior-level meeting held to address the problems faced by the town that nothing had been done as yet. They also raised the issue of the taxi union not returning the parking constructed by Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) at Library Bazaar, which has led to lack of parking space for the tourist vehicles in the town. It was also suggested that only 15 taxis should be allowed to stay at the stands on both sides of Mall Road to avoid congestion, and the rest of the taxis should either be shifted to Kingcraig or near civil hospital during the tourist season to ease traffic congestion. The District Magistrate also directed the officials to clear the civil hospital area from the construction debris dumped on the road so that adequate arrangements can be made for the parking of tourist vehicles during tourist season. The DM, Dehradun, also looked concerned at the drinking water supply situation in the town, which was only about 50 per cent in comparison to the present demand. The Jal Sangthan Assistant Engineer, GP Gairola, apprised the senior officials in the meeting that a proposal of making a lake near Kandi Ghat was still pending at the administration level, and once completed it could assist in augmenting the water supply to the town to a certain extent. The DM also enquired about the sewerage project being carried out under the JNNURM scheme in the town and was unhappy at the it's speed here. He was also bemused to know that no arrangements had been made for the water required to run for such projects by the executing agency Pey Jal Nigam. No official from Pey jal Nigam was present to give a reply; the matter was left for another meeting in days to come. The DM directed the MC officials to ensure the order of complete plastic ban in the town and carry out an awareness drive without any further delay. He directed the officials from Sulabh International to construct lavatories handed over to them by MDDA and MC before March, so that they can be used by the tourists during the season. On the law and order situation, SSP Kewal Khurana informed the gathering that a drive to control drunk driving, triple riding and driving without helmet would be carried out within a few days strictly in Mussoorie. He also said that around 13 CCTV cameras will be placed at the bottleneck areas and linked to the control room in Dehradun directly for better traffic management. He also informed in the meeting that around 15 constables along with two Cheetah vehicles had been provided for night patrolling. It was also decided in the meeting that in order to resolve the border disputes, DM, Tehri, will also be invited in the next meeting. It was decided in the meeting that the issue of encroachments would also be taken up in the review meeting to be held after
15 days. |
