Tailor charred to death
Chandigarh, January 22

Tribune photos: Manoj Mahajan A 52-year-old tailor was charred to death in a major fire that broke out in a boutique at Sector 17-C at around 2 am today. Eight cabins of other shops were also reduced to ashes while 12 cabins were damaged in the fire.

While seeing off his father last week, Kapil, 20-year-old son of Parmal Singh who was burnt alive during the fire incident at a Sector 17 shop early morning today, had hardly imagined that he would never be able to see his father returning home.

Anupama case
PGI gave preference to patients with lesser injuries for surgery

Chandigarh, January 22
Despite the severity of Anupama’s injury, two patients, who had relatively lesser urgency and were admitted after Anupama, were given preference for surgery at the PGI. While Anupama was admitted on July 17, the other two patients, one admitted on July 18 and the other on July 19, were operated upon on the day they were admitted to the hospital.

Chandigarh, January 22
In a first, the PGI has come up with a robot anaesthetist, a computer-assisted anaesthesia delivery system, which is capable of bringing down mortality due to the adverse effects of anaesthesia. The Closed Loop Anaesthesia Delivery System (CLADS) controls drug overdose as well as underdose. It also monitors the blood pressure of the patient during the surgery, allowing the surgeon to focus better on the surgery.

Residents gherao DEO’s office as school denies admission

One more tests positive for swine flu
Chandigarh, January 22
A 31-year-old patient from Mohali tested positive for swine flu today. The patient has been admitted to the PGIMER.

Rail car back on track
Chandigarh, January 22
The historical rail motor car is back on the Kalka-Shimla heritage line from today. With a hike of Rs 50 in its fare, now its ticket will be of Rs 255. The motor car has started its journey after a halt of six months. Interestingly, the motor car with a capacity of 12 passengers has a waiting list of double the number this weekend.

The UT Cricket Association (Regd), Chandigarh, organised a candle march today from Stadium, Sector 16, to Sector 17, Plaza, in wake of the long due affiliation of the UT Cricket Association from the BCCI.

SSA teachers want services regularised
Chandigarh, January 22
Over 400 SSA Teachers staged a protest in Sector 25 to raise the issue of their regularisation. The teachers said they had first forwarded the demand of regularisation in August 2010. But there was no outcome in spite of several representations of higher authorities of the UT.

No star nite at DAV-10
Chandigarh, January 22
Fearing violence on campus, the DAV College, Sector 10, has decided to say no to the “Star Nite” organised in the college every year in March. The college had turned into a battleground a day before the star nite in 2012 with five gunshots fired after around 20 armed assailants, carrying swords and sticks, had entered the campus that left seven students injured.

Man arrested with heroin
Ropar, January 22
Local police has claimed to seize 50 gm of heroin from a local resident here today. The accused identified as Puneet Vinayk has been arrested after registering a case under NDPS Act, said the police.

Pedestrian killed in accident
Dera Bassi, January 22
A pedestrian was killed in a road accident when an unidentified vehicle hit him on the Ambala- Chandigarh road near Lalru on the evening on Monday.

SSP told to probe ‘murder’ case
Mohali, January 22
Indicating possible connivance between the police and a woman, who has been accused of murdering her husband, the Mohali additional sessions court pointed out serious flaws in the police investigation and directed the Mohali SSP to conduct further investigation into the matter. Raising serious doubts over the police investigation in the case, in which Manmohan Singh had died after allegedly being administered liquor laced with poison extracted from lizard by his wife Manpreet Kaur, the Additional Sessions Judge, Mohali, Rajinder Aggarwal, observed that while the deceased had died in 2006, the so-called suicide note, attached with the documents of investigative proceedings, was written on a page from a diary of 2010.

In the Jyoti murder case, accused Gurmeet and Dharampal, Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary’s nephews, and truck driver Tilak Raj, who had allegedly helped Chaudhary to eliminate Jyoti, were produced in the court after the completion of their five-day police remand.

Man acquitted in rape bid case
Chandigarh, January 22
In a fast-track trial, the court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today acquitted a 26-year-old man in a case of attempt to rape an 11-year-old girl. The court acquitted Basant Kumar after all the witnesses in the case turned hostile and the prosecution could produce no other evidence in the case. The entire trial was completed in just three days time. Charges were framed in the case on January 19.

Woman alleges rape by brother-in-law, uncle
Panchkula, January 22
A woman, a resident of Rajiv Colony, Sector 17, alleged gang rape by her brother-in-law and paternal uncle here today. The woman said she was raped in September and since then she had been running from pillar to post to get a case registered, but all efforts went in vain.

Undertrial escapes from custody
Chandigarh, January 22
An undertrial in a case of robbery, who was being taken to Shimla by the Himachal police, today fled from the custody after taking advantage of a road accident.

5-day police remand for chinar

Tribune Photo: S Chandan Arrested in the kidnapping case of three-year-old girl Harmeini, 22-year-old Chinar Dutt today told the police that she was unaware of the entire conspiracy and was kept in the dark about the plan. She said it was only at 5.30 pm on January 15, when the girl was kidnapped, that she got to know of the plan from her friend, Jagpal Beniwal, and was threatened all these days not to disclose anything.

Eve-teasing: Youth, parents arrested

The Mohali police today arrested a local youth along with his parents on the charge of eve-teasing a class IX girl student here. The accused have been identified as Gaurav Lamba, his parents Nidhi Lamba and Arvinder Lamba.

Yuvraj may be made UT ambassador

Cricketer Yuvraj Singh is all set to be the brand ambassador of the Chandigarh Administration for a mega mock drill to be organised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in the tricity on February 15.

Little check on smoking at PCA Stadium

The ban on smoking in public will go up in smoke in the VVIP enclosure at PCA during the ODI match tomorrow as the PCA authorities not only curtailed the number of medical teams to check the menace by issuing challans but also restricted their entry to only one block of the stadium.
