New Delhi, January 22
A large number of disgruntled employees of gurdwaras today reached the residence of Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), to extend their support to his party in the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) election. They just demanded that the anomalies in the administration of the gurdwara committee should be worked out and the salary structure improved.

Nihal Singh, assistant superintendent at Moti Bagh gurdwara, said the DSGMC led by Paramjit Singh Sarna has done nothing for the welfare of the employees over the last many years. Action is taken against the employees who argue for their rights. A few years ago, some employees, who had protested at the residence of Sarna, were suspended.

Jaswant Singh, who does service at Gurdwara Sultanpuri, said that the present committee does not pay heed to the problems of the employees. Now they have come to the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) to extend their support.

Manjit Kaur, who has been working as sewadar at Gurdwara Moti Bagh for the last 12 years, said that her monthly salary is just Rs 600. She is a widow with two children. It is very difficult two survive with such a meagre salary. The present committee has made no improvement in the salary structure of the gurdwara committee employees.

Amarjit Kaur, wife of Dalbir Singh, a sewadar at gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila, said that her husband has been working with the gurdwara committee for the last 18 years, but his monthly salary is just Rs 8,000.

New Delhi, January 22
Two persons have been arrested for allegedly stealing and misappropriating over 19 tonnes of steel blade strips worth Rs 70 lakh, which were to be exported to Egypt by Jindal Steel, a company owned by Congress MP Naveen Jindal.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways), S B S Tyagi, said the arrested persons are identified as Balwinder Singh (45) and Manoj (28). The anti-terror unit of the Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested them from South Delhi’s Mehrauli area based upon a complaint lodged with the Gurgaon Police on December 22.

Tyagi added, “The theft came to light in Egypt when salt was found inside an exported container loaded with steel strips.” The salt was placed in the container to balance its weight, as several strips had been removed.

Gateway Rail Greight, a company in contract with Jindal Steels in Gurgaon, alleged that the container was part of a consignment transported from Hisar. The steel strips were loaded in a truck driven by Mangal Singh on November 4.  “The container was supposed to reach ICD Garhi for export. But approximately 19.79 tonnes were misappropriated by Mangal with the help of Balvinder,” Tyagi added.

They filled the container with plastic bags containing salt to balance the container’s weight. The container was then delivered to a container depot in Gurgaon and exported to Egypt. The matter was thereafter reported to Jindal Steel from Egypt. A case was lodged with Gurgaon Sector 10 police station.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 22
The country’s first Centre for Northeast Studies, opened four years ago at Jamia Millia Islamia, was moved to a new complex on campus.

Human Resource Development Minister Dr MM Pallam Raju inaugurated the centre today and also suggested that a museum on the culture and history of northeast states would be an ideal addition to the centre at Jamia.

“Over the last three years, the centre has initiated research studies, seminars, lectures and conducted workshops on a range of issues, including better understanding of conflicts such as the Bodo-settler clashes in Assam, the movements in Nagaland and Manipur. One of its ongoing studies looks at the challenges facing women from the NE in metros. It has also focused on freedom fighters from the region. Such studies and research projects are necessary to help bridge the gap between the northeast states and the rest of India,” he said.
