DECEMBER 16 GANGRAPE
New Delhi, January 16 There were representatives under the banner of one “Rashtriya Satyagraha’, a non-partisan group which pressed for proper security for the eyewitness, the 23-year-old victim’s friend, relieving the eight accused of charges in the death of the constable Subhash Tomar and ensuring that the Supreme Court guidelines are followed in implementation of the Section 144 applied during the protests held during that time. Several groups, such as the one titled “December 16 KRANTI”, are believed to be stationed at the site seeking justice for the victim. As the day ended, Kiran Bedi joined the protesters. “We must keep our agitation active to ensure that once the Justice Verma recommendations come out, they are implemented,” she said. She also spoke about reforms that are needed in the 6 Ps—parents, principle, police, politicians, prosecution and the press. “This is a historic moment to get your demands heard,” she said while adding that strict laws should be in place to ensure that no police station refuses to file first information reports. “If reports are not filed, then the offending policeman should be suspended or even be made to resign,” she said. Also, pointing at lack of transparency in the operations of the law enforcement agencies, Kiran Bedi stressed the point that there should be social audit of courts and police stations by credible people/ groups comprising academics and lawyers, among others. |
DSGMC POLL 2013
New Delhi, January 16 Several devotees at the Majnu Ka Tilla Gurdwara, located in North Delhi on the banks of the Yamuna, said political clashes at religious institutions are not acceptable. They disturb the unity of the community and tarnish its image. They were referring to the bloody clashes between the two main contesting parties, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) (Delhi) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) (Badal), at the Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi on November 15. The SAD-Delhi is the ruling party of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC). Paramjeet Singh Sarna is the incumbent president of the committee. Some devotees mentioned that the several schools run by the DSGMC give priority to the children of its members. The DSGMC staff members voiced the same opinion. The employees further claim that their meager salaries have not been raised. While highlighting the incident of the political clash, Jai Singh, a driver for a government agency, who is a regular visitor at the Majnu Ka Tilla Gurdwara, said, “The fight at the Rakab Ganj Gurdwara should never have taken place. It is the house of Guru and why do they (parties) have to bring their petty politics there! They are working for the community. Such incidents spoil the image of the Sikh community.” Jai also said that during the last election, the DSGMC had promised free education to all the children of the community studying in its schools across Delhi. “Such a thing has never happened. I have two children who are studying in a school that is run by the committee, but I have to pay Rs 1,800 per month as their fee. I support the SAD-Badal, but if any party comes to power, they will look after their interests first.” Another ardent devotee, Bavinder Singh, who is a transporter based in Delhi, said, “The children of the DSGMC members are easily admitted to its schools. They are given priority and the poor are sidelined.” Dilpreet Singh, a businessman based at Alipur in North Delhi, said that the public will not benefit from the elections. “I will not vote for any party. I come to the Majnu Ka Tilla Gurdwara every day and I have not seen Sarna even once. A committee staff member asserted that the Gurdwara does not have a boundary wall at the rear-end. “I have worked for the committee for 22 years and the wall is yet to be constructed. The place is very unsafe as the Yamuna bank and a dense jungle adjoining it are located next to the staff quarters. Anyone can walk in and commit a crime,” he said. The staff member asserts that despite the large sums of money donated by the public to the gurdwaras in Delhi, the salaries of the DSGMC employees have not been increased. “I get Rs 8,000 only. I have three sons who are still studying. To fulfill their needs, I have to get money from my relatives in Uttar Pradesh, where I have my ancestral land. That land is the only thing that keeps me and my family going. Who can survive on Rs 8,000 in Delhi! Even if any party comes to power, we will still be at the same position where we are right now,” says the committee employee. |
Rs 30-cr power substation for W Delhi
New Delhi, January 16 To be built at a cost of Rs 30 crore, this 66/11 KV grid sub-station will be built by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) in partnership with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). “Being partly funded by the DJB, this 66/11 KV grid station will be completed in a record time of 12 months. Once completed, it will power the future needs of the fast-developing areas of West Delhi, including Najafgargh. The grid will also benefit DJB’s pumping station in the locality. Besides, it will power the adjoining areas like DMRC staff quarters, DJB Colony, Sainik Enclave, Anaj Mandi, Deenpur, Goela Colony,” said Gopal Saxena, BRPL CEO. At present, the load capacity in the area, which is supplied from BRPL grid substations in Dwarka and Nangloi and Delhi Transco Limited’s 220 Grid Najafgargh, is 150 MVA (120 MW). The power demand in this area is growing at around 10-12 per cent annually. |
Work on monorail project to begin soon
New Delhi, January 16 It is expected that the work on the project will start in a couple of months and the corridor would be commissioned in early 2017. The 11-km corridor from Shastri Park Metro station to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations with three inter-change points at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri to integrate them with three different Metro lines, ie Dilshad Garden-Rithala line, Anand Vihar-Dwarka and the proposed Trilokpuri Metro Station on Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar line respectively. Goswami said that RITES Ltd. had carried out a techno-economic feasibility study and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this corridor whereas the DMRC has further reviewed the DPR and submitted its report to the government for implementation. Goswami and Sandeep Dikshit, MP from East Delhi, while taking a round of route-alignment and proposed sites of the stations gave instructions to the DMRC to make the corridor more useful. Goswami stated that the corridor would cater to around 1.5 lakh passengers per day in the beginning. It is proposed that the fare would be somewhat similar to Metro fares. Dikshit stated that the East Delhi colonies are becoming more congested with the coming up of highrise buildings. “The buses are the main mode of transport. In spite of three Metro lines catering to different parts of East Delhi, there is a need to have mass transit connectivity in the form of monorail to supplement the services of Delhi Metro,” said Dikshit. It would be cheaper to lay monorail lines than Metro lines. Monorail can take sharper curves. It can also run in densely populated localities as it takes lesser area to operate. |
Students hold candlelight vigil
New Delhi, January 16 Saying that they were hopeful of the expected report by the Justice Verma Commission, hundreds of students and teachers from Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University gathered today at the Arts Faculty on North Campus and pledged to work towards safer environment for women in and around campus. “The Capital has become even more perilous after the December 16 incident. City roads may have more policemen during night, but there are hardly any women. The incident has upset young women and their families who do not believe in the so-called safety measures. But this needs to change and it will begin at home. We need to stand strong and not shy away from the problem,” said Prakarti Chaturvedi, a B.Sc. student from Gargi College today at the vigil. Some students said that they were disappointed by the way the entire episode had been handled by the government and that now their hopes were set on the Justice Verma Commission guidelines for women’s safety. |
