Villagers allege mafia trying to grab road for building resort
Mussoorie, January 23 The head of the Dhobi Ghat village panchayat, Qamruddin, alleged that the land mafia was trying to stop their right to way by usurping the MC road, which they had been using since ages. The land mafia was constructing another road adjacent to it so that the builders are able to get an easy passage for the upcoming resort being constructed here illegally, "which was unacceptable." The residents of Dhobi Ghat, consisting mainly of washermen, gathered in large numbers and raised slogans, demanding stalling of the illegal construction of the road immediately. MC president OP Uniyal, after receiving the complaint, rushed to the spot and and termed the whole activity of usurping the MC road by the builders as illegal, and directed them to stop the work immediately. He also directed the owners of the property to reach his office within a day with appropriate documents and explain how they were attempting to close the road without any prior permission from the council. The residents raised several questions on how the sanction had been given for the construction by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), and also alleged that the MDDA officials were hand-in-glove with the mafia. Therefore, there was no check on such activities. Qamruddin, the village headman, also rued the fact that the alternate road being constructed adjacent to the old Municipal Council road was not usable due to a steep climb, resulting in immense difficulty for them to commute on a daily basis. He further said that the proposed resort by the builders would also affect their livelihood as the water used for washing would be diverted to the resort, rendering them without any work. The residents further alleged that the whole activity was being carried out in connivance with MDDA officials, and the material being used for construction was being accumulated through illegal mining activity from nearby limestone hills, which has been already prohibited by the Supreme Court through it's clear order several years ago. Shaddullah, another senior resident of Dhobi Ghat, alleged that land sharks were bent upon grabbing the land at Dhobi Ghat on the pretext of constructing a residential house, but later they would convert this into a commercial outfit in collusion with corrupt government officials. This would not be tolerated at any cost. He further said that if their demand to stop the construction was not met, they would hit the streets in protest. When contacted MDDA official Shyam Mohan Sharma said that the builders sought the permission for building a residential house, for which the permission had been granted to them by the MDDA. |

People to be challaned for dropping litter
Dehradun January 23 District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam said this at a meeting with zonal officers and officials of the DMC and the Civil Defence which was convened to review the "Clean Doon and Clean Campus" campaign held two days ago. Purushottam said the campaign would be held on the 20th of every month where students of public schools and government schools would participate in it along with other volunteers. Senior Health Officer, DMC, Dr Gurpal Singh, informed him that out of 250 dairies, operating in the city, most of the dairy owners were throwing the cattle dung in the drains. He also drew attention towards those shopkeepers who covered the drains and put their goods on it, because of which the polythene and other garbage could not be removed from these drains. The DM instructed the officials to challan the residents, dairy owners and shopkeepers found responsible for creating mess on the public places with litter and polythene. He also issued instructions to DMC officials to arrange dustbins on the main crossings and spots of the city. He also asked them to provide him a list of the workers of the Mohalla Swachata Smiti, councillors and volunteers of Civil Defence and NGOs who participated in the campaign and ensure their contribution in the campaign every month. |

Retired ONGC workers to boycott ‘CMD-at-Home’ function
Dehradun, January 23 “The ONGC CMD at Home”, which is exclusively meant for its retired employees, is held twice a year a day before Republic Day and Independence Day. The ONGC management expresses gratitude to the retired employees for their valuable services at the function. Officiating president of the ONGC Retired Employees Association MR Singh told mediapersons today that despite their repeated appeals the ONGC management had failed to do justice to them. Though they had given the prime time of their life to the commission, its management had failed to give them pension. “All ONGC employees who have retired before 2007 do not get pension. When in service these employees drew meager salaries compared to the salaries drawn by ONGC employees 2007 onwards. This is gross injustice,” argued NR Gupta, vice-president of the association. “At the CMD at Home earlier, successive Chief Managing Directors assured us that they had taken up the matter with the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. But all such assurances have failed to deliver the desired results,” he added. Gupta said the Department of Public Enterprises under the Union Government had even directed ONGC to form a corpus fund by contributing 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent of its profit before tax to it in order to take care of the needs of its retired employees. “On the basis of the direction of the Department of Public Enterprises, a proposal was prepared in 2008-09, which was still to be approved by the Ministry of Petroleum. The retired ONGC employees are now losing patience and are left with no option but to boycott the CMD at Home,” he said. Joint secretary of the association Kirpal Singh Kukreja said some of them had worked when ONGC was directly under the control of the Union government but still they had been deprived of pension. “We worked in difficult conditions in the formative years of ONGC and put India on the oil map of the world but ONGC that is today a Maharatna and the most valued company in terms of profit had failed to do justice to its retired employees,” MR Singh said. |

New police station to come up near Doon's IT hub
Dehradun, January 23 Managing Director, SIDCUL, Rakesh Sharma, had agreed to provide land and fund the building of the police station, which would take shape within a couple of months. Before that, a police post would be set up soon to handle law and order in the area. Director General of Police Satyavrat Bansal has already signalled towards cracking down on land mafia. Several of the builders and property dealers are engaged in building residential complexes and flats in and around Sahastradhara Road. With a police station in the area, it will be easier for the police to keep an eye on the activities of these elements as well. This locality, which was once preferred for long drives for being surrounded with tall, lush trees and mountains in the vicinity, has seen mushrooming of commercial and residential properties in a short period. Many police and administrative officials also reside in the vicinity. All these factors have contributed in rendering this area important. However, one more area which also needs to have a police station is Prem Nagar. This pocket, which comes after Sahaspur, has been the centre of criminal activities such as drug trafficking, betting, smuggling etc for a long time. There was speculation regarding establishment of a police station, but the idea never materialised. It is high time that this area, too, has a police station to contain criminals' movement. Meanwhile, SSP Kewal Khurana today introduced one-way traffic on Subhash Road. The new arrangement would be effective from Thursday. Those who entered Subhash Road, proceeding from Pacific Hotel towards Police Headquarters, Vikas Bhavan and Secretariat, will not be able to turn back on the same road. They will have to turn left towards Rajpur Road and take to St Joseph's School via eucalyptus crossing, and then turn left to come back to Pacific Hotel. Similarly, traffic on a narrow stretch on Subhash Road, which opens to Karanpur Road, will be allowed to exit from the road but not at the entry point. |
Road from Survey Chowk to Sahastradhara crossing to be widened
Dehradun, January 23 Chairing a meeting with officials of various department to discuss ways to streamline the traffic system, District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam directed the Executive Engineer, PWD, to talk to the Director, Survey of India, regarding dismantling the surrounding wall of the department bordering this stretch and prepare a proposal for the widening of the road. He directed to constitute a committee of seven members to oversee the ongoing projects regarding traffic. Purushottam also held deliberations over the widening of crossings in the city and the removal of electric poles situated in the middle of the crossings. He directed the Executive Engineer, Power Department, to provide him a list of such poles which were to be removed. He, however, passed instructions to first remove the poles installed near Krishna Palace, Chakrata Road, Lansdown crossing and the railway station. He directed the Additional District Magistrate to give him detailed information regarding monitoring and survey work about the widening of crossings handled by the Revenue Department, the status of progress on these crossings and the maps of the area by February 15. |
