HC flays SDMC for levying tax
on Jamia
New Delhi, January 23 The civic body had threatened coercive action such as attachment of property. Jamia Millia Islamia had subsequently submitted a writ petition in the Delhi High Court. In the petition, Jamia had challenged the demands of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and stated that the corporation had failed to take the view of the university before issuing the notice which was in violation of natural justice. “Today, the case came up in the Delhi High Court before the sitting Justice G.S. Sistani where Jamia’s counsel Atyab Siddiqui argued that the South Delhi Municipal Corporation had levied tax on Jamia, treating it as a corporate institution rather than a central university. The judge quashed the demand of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, stating that the demand made by them was illegal and has given direction to the corporation to be fair and consult the university before taking such measures,” the statement further read. |

New Delhi, January 23 An audience of over 1,200 students at Delhi University was connected to 11 other instituitions across the country in a two-way interactive link. Another 3,00,000 students from 500 universities and colleges were connected with a one-way link. The first lecture was held by Sam Pitroda, adviser to the Prime Minister and Prof Michael Sandel from Harvard University on ‘Democratizing Information, justice, equality and the rule of law’. Sandel, author of Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do? and What Money Can’t Buy, today brainstormed various topics, including equality of women in his one-hour lecture. “Education, social movements and an active civil society are the primary elements through which modern-day societal ills can be resolved, with technology being the medium for a better dialogue,” Sandel said. Several Delhi University students also engaged in a Question-Answer session after the lecture. DU vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh said, “Such communication tools are revolutionizing. This network is a very powerful tool that would help in swift, hi-tech connectivity of a large audience. Our students have a golden opportunity to utilize this network unlike past generations.” The institutions linked to the network today include IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Madras, IIT-Kanpur, Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore and several NITs. In the coming months, the university plans to use the network to initiate academic cooperation with other institutes in the country by sharing content and expertise. “We are planning to use the network on a major scale. I am in talks with IIT-Bombay which has a well-known robotics department. The faculty there will help us with our robotics centre at DU’s Cluster Innovation Centre. ” Singh said. |
Special education plan for
Asha Kiran inmates in limbo
New Delhi, January 23 Importantly, following recent visits to review the winter preparedness, the members of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights, noted that the on-site services available to the inmates for training on their activities of daily living (ADL), vocational and skill development are accessible to only 20 per cent of about 970 inmates. They pointed out deficiencies on several fronts, including the absence of individualised rehabilitation plan, even as they maintained that there has been some improvement in terms of arrangement of beds, blankets, geysers, etc. “There is lack of planning, no rehabilitation services, no foster care and the inmates are being herded together in the home. Children with disability need separate attention for their mainstreaming in which participation of the community is also vital,” observed NCPCR member and health rights activist Dr Vandana Prasad. For special training of the mentally challenged, the pupil-teacher ratio should be proper as mandated by the Rehabilitation Council of India-approved norms of the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped, an autonomous body under the administrative control of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. Apparently, owing to some disagreement over funds and salaries, the NGO chose to wind up its collaboration with the Delhi government even as the department of social welfare was keen on a five-year extension. “The government was inclined to continue its services with the NGO, but it was some monetary hassle due to which the things did not materialize,” said some Asha Kiran officials. |
