Republic Day celebrated with patriotic fervour
Ludhiana, January 27
A large number of Punjabis had sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. These views were expressed by Charanjit Singh Atwal, Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha, who hoisted the National Flag during the district-level celebrations of the 64th Republic Day held at the Government College for Boys here yesterday.

Tributes paid to freedom fighters

Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari unfurled the National Flag near Clock Tower in
Ludhiana. Tewari paid rich tributes to freedom fighters like Shaheed Bhagat Singh,
Rajguru, Sukhdev and Lala Lajpat Rai. He said the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr Bhim Rao
Ambedkar, made tremendous contribution in giving India a Constitution which enshrined the ideals of democracy, equality, secularism and socialism.

Graft charges against 23 patwaris
Ludhiana, January 27
Tightening the noose around patwaris, who do mutation work of land sale deals, the District Collector (Deputy Commissioner) has dismissed Satinderpal Singh of Detwal block on corruption charges. Charges have been framed against 23 patwaris in the district. All these patwaris are under suspension. Their cases are being heard in the courts of the District Collector.

Cultural performances, plays mark celebrations
The Republic Day was celebrated with religious fervour at different schools in the city. NCC cadets performed a march past and saluted the National Flag at Ryan International School. Athletics events like 200m, 400m and 100m race, aerobics, parents’ race, needle race, lemon race and ball race were held as part of the annual sports day, which was also celebrated here. Cultural performances were also given by students.

A book titled 'Samein Da Sach' was released at Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Punjabi Bhawan here on Sunday. The book is authored by Gurjatinder Singh
Randhawa. Several litterateurs including Dr SS Johl, Jagdev Singh Jassowal, president of the academy prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill were present on the occasion. The book is a compilation of columns and writings in a weekly newspaper published in the US.
Drug peddler arrested with 30 bags of poppy husk

Samrala police claimed to have recovered over 30 bags of poppy husk weighing about 12 quintals of about Rs 40 lakh from a truck, during a naka from an inter-state gang of smugglers.
