2 youths acquitted of attempt-to-murder charge
Chandigarh, October 29
Around 10 months after a woman constable of the UT police was hit, dragged onto the bonnet of a car and later slapped after she fell on the road, a local court today acquitted both accused of the charge of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC.

BTech student ends her life 
Panchkula, October 29
Rishu, the victim A 24-year-old BTech student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the grille of the window of her room at her residence in Sector 20 here this morning. According to the police, the victim, Rishu, was upset over studies. The victim had appeared for the BTech exam from a private college in Chandigarh.

PGI study finds nursing students stressed

Fear of acquiring infections from patients, making mistakes in clinical procedures and poor performance in examinations. These are among the stressors ruling the minds of nursing students, according to a study conducted by the National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE), PGI.

Welfare society told to refund Rs 8.25 lakh, pay compensation
Mohali, October 29
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Mohali, has directed Sky Rock City Welfare Society to refund Rs 8.25 lakh with interest at 12 per cent per annum from the dates of deposit till actual refund to a Sector 70 resident and also pay her a compensation of Rs 50,000 for mental agony, harassment and cost of litigation.

Blood samples collected 
Mohali , October 29
District health officials today collected blood samples from Sohana village as cases of jaundice were reported from there. Civil Surgeon Neelam Bhardwaj said three children suffering from jaundice were identified by the health officials. While two of them had recovered, one was still undergoing treatment at a private clinic. The disease had not taken the form of an epidemic.

The National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme, Chandigarh wing, today observed “Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Day”. VK Gagneja, Director, Health and Family Welfare, Chandigarh, said iodine deficiency as presented by “goitre” had a prevalence rate of 7.3 per cent in Chandigarh, which marks the area with high incidence for iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).

Ban on diesel autos in UT from November 1
Commuters in for harassment today
Around 10,000 diesel-run autos ply in the city and most of them are registered with the Punjab Transport Department in Mohali. Chandigarh, October 29
Commuters who travel between Chandigarh and adjoining areas of Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur are in for major harassment as the Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula Auto-Rickshaw Joint Action Committee has announced to block the entry of buses of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) in Mohali and Panchkula tomorrow.


Around 10,000 diesel-run autos ply in the city and most of them are registered with the Punjab Transport Department in Mohali.

Schools fail to act on orders
The Education Department issued the transfer orders on finding that there was a dearth of teachers in government schools running on the city's periphery. Chandigarh, October 29
The Education Department’s effort to rationalise the student-teacher ratio in government schools has failed to garner the desired results. Most of the schools are yet to comply with the department’s two-week-old orders for the transfer of 155 teachers.

Youth convicted of raping 15-yr-old girl
Chandigarh, October 29
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anshu Shukla today convicted a youth of raping a 15-year-old girl. The court convicted Anand (25) of the charge of rape under Section 376 of the IPC. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced tomorrow.

A local court today acquitted two persons after the prosecution failed to prove the charge of assault on public servant. The court acquitted Bhajan Singh, chairman, Zila Parishad, Rural Development, UT, and his brother Kulwinder Singh Kala of the charge of assault or use of criminal force to deter public servant from performing duty under Sections 353 and 332 of the IPC.

Chandigarh, October 29
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anshu Shukla today acquitted a youth of the charge of raping a mentally challenged woman. The accused, a resident of Colony Number 4, was behind the bars for the past eight months for allegedly raping a 45-year-old woman, who hailed from Pondicherry and spoke only Malayalam.

Bribe: Charges framed against Burail Jail warder
Chandigarh, October 29
A CBI court today framed charges of corruption against a head warder of Burail Jail. The CBI had arrested Sarwan Sharma, the head warder of Model Jail Burail, on July 14 for seeking Rs 5,000 as bribe from a convict to change his duty in the jail. The warder allegedly asked for the money from the convict to get a water purifier installed at his house. The inmate is a convict in a kidnapping case.

Nalagarh resident held with 15 gm heroin at Aroma light point
Chandigarh, October 29
The Chandigarh Police today arrested a resident of Nalagarh and recovered 15 gram of heroin from his possession. Sources said the accused, identified as Gagandeep who was driving an Alto car, jumped the red signal at the Aroma light point in Sector 22 following which the traffic police signalled him to stop. However, the accused got scared and threw a ladies purse out of the car.
