Abohar
Theft in train:
An amount of Rs 10 lakh was reportedly stolen from the briefcase of Pankaj Mittal, an iron merchant, from the Sriganganagar-Sarai Rohila (Delhi) train yesterday. A case has been registered with the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Sarai Rohilla after the Sriganganagar police refused to entertain the complaint on Tuesday.

Illegal medicines: 3 held Surinder Singh and Gopal Krishan of Purani Abadi were on Wednesday nabbed by the Sriganganagar police on the charge of supplying prohibited sedative medicines and stacks worth Rs 2 lakh were seized. Vinod Arora of Kesarisinghpur has been taken into custody following interrogation of the accused, who reportedly said they used Vinod’s hotel for entertaining bulk purchasers, sources said.

4 held with poppy husk: The Abohar police on Wednesday arrested Prakash Singh Mallanwala, Jaswant Singh, Sunil Amarpura and Gaganjit Singh Khubban after seizure of 40 kg of poppy husk that had been smuggled from Rajasthan.

4 booked in suicide case: The Mukerian police have booked a woman and three others for abetment to suicide. The victim has been identified as Rakesh Kumar of Puvara village in Mukerian sub-division. The victim's father, Sukhdev Singh, alleged Rakesh committed suicide out of shame. He alleged Mandeep Kaur of Papina and three unidentified persons had beaten his son near Lallian Palace.

Youth fest begins:
The three-day Punjabi University Inter-University Youth Festival started with much fanfare at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hall of the university on Wednesday. Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh inaugurated the festival. Dr SK Verma, Director, Youth Welfare, said students from 253 colleges affiliated to Punjabi University were participating in six zones in 30 events.

Fund raiser: Chandigarh Round Table 216 organised a movie fund raiser at a city mall. The organisers said the funds will go into running schools for underprivileged children. The NGO runs a school at Kharar and is building one at Baddi.

Nurpur
Jawali BJP leader booked: Following a complaint by former zila parishad member of Jawali Amit Kumar, the police registered a case under Section 3 of the SC/ST Act and Section 506 of the IPC against Ramesh Rana, president of the local BJP mandal, on Tuesday. In his complaint, Amit said Ramesh had used caste-based remarks against him on October 26. Jawali DSP DC Verma said an inquiry would be initiated after receiving directions from the Kangra SP in this connection.

Dance competition held: The local unit of Himotkarsh, a social organisation, organised an inter-school group dance competition on the theme of ‘daughter’ on Wednesday. Eight government and private schools from Nurpur and Jawali areas participated. Public Relations Officer, Kangra, Amin Chishti presided over the event. The local Noorpur Public School bagged the first position. Rose Public School, Suliali, and Future Foundation School were adjudged first and second runners-up, respectively. A Himotkarsh spokesman said the winners would be honoured and awarded mementoes on November 2 at the annual function of the Himotkarsh.

Sundernagar
Man held with charas:
The police on Tuesday recovered 215 gms of charas from a youth and arrested him under the provisions of the NDPS Act. According to the police, ASI Prakash Chand arrested the accused while he was on patrolling along with other police officials from Sundernagar bazar. A case has been registered.
