Auto challaning drive to get strict
Jalandhar, October 13 A committee was formulated by the DC here today to oversee the stringent adherence to traffic rules among school transport in the district schools. It was also categorically declared today that strict action would be initiated against school principals whose students were found travelling in auto-rickshaws (as this was not permitted by the law). DC KK Yadav, along with District Transport Officer RP Singh, today formulated a committee headed by the DTO to ensure the proper adherence to rules formulated for the safety of school students in various transportation means and vehicles. The Commissioner of Police Jalandhar, Additional Commissioner (traffic), Senior Police Captain (rural), DEOs (secondary and elementary) and NGO representatives Surinder Saini and Sanjay Goyal were made part of the committee. DC KK Yadav said, “Drives will be run in the district to ensure that the practice of irresponsibly plying school students in autos stopped. The District Transport Department, traffic police and Education Department shall also be holding joint drives to ensure that autos carrying students this way and the principals of the schools are penalised.” DTO RP Singh said, “The way auto-rickshaws ply in the district is highly dangerous for students. Just today, I saw 10 girls travelling in an auto. In the coming days, both before and after Diwali, our main stress will be on making sure that autos do not carry school children in the district. We shall be carrying out surprise challaning drives at three different spots, identified in the district, where auto traffic is excessive after schools close and any students travelling on autos will be taken off and autos challaned immediately. We shall also be taking NGOs and media with us to ensure the success of these drives.” The DTO added that other prime decisions taken during the meeting today were regarding the suspension of the use of auto-rickshaws as the mode of transport for schoolchildren, use of speed guards by the traffic police to ensure speed control of school vehicles and the issuance of fitness of speed certificates only after a physical check of the vehicles. The DTO said it had also been decided that training and seminars would be held by the police in coordination with the DEO for drivers of schools both in urban and rural areas of the district to make sure that they were well versed with all aspects of the law. He said during these seminars, problems faced by drivers shall also be discussed and NGOs shall also be included in the seminars. He also said that it would be ensured that such seminars were held on holidays so that all could participate. Principals under gaze

MP discusses development issues with officials
Jalandhar, October 13 Chaudhary first eulogised the working of bureaucrats and staff functioning in various local departments, terming them as a good team. In his introductory speech, he went on saying, “My job will be to act as a lobbyist to get the funds allocated for various development works in the city. I will work with a mission to get funds under various Central schemes and expect your full cooperation for getting works done speedily.” He went on, “In return, I would only expect that you keep me informed about the works sanctioned by me, the status of funds coming and utilised and about the inauguration of all these projects. I have often learnt that funds coming from the MP’s discretionary quota are distributed through MLAs and even inaugurated by them. I do not want this to happen.” Chaudhary came along with District Congress Committee (urban) chairman Rajinder Beri. The MP was told that out of the pending amount of Rs 19.69 crore that former MP Mahinder Singh Kaypee had been allocated during his term, an amount of Rs 16.98 crore had been utilised. Residents take to e-shopping in big way this festive season
Jalandhar, October 13 Similarly, 87-year-old Ajit Singh was also able to send Karva Chauth gifts to her daughter, living in Australia, by ordering traditional festival items from his tab. The NRI city seems to have been mesmerised by loads of gifts options available online in the ongoing festive season. For a city where almost every house has one member living in some foreign country, the craze is not confined only to youngsters but even old people, mostly living alone in the city, are also opting to send gifts to their near and dear ones residing abroad this way. “The process is simple, fast and user friendly. Instead of going out and wasting time to move from one shop to another in heavy traffic on the city’s congested roads, I prefer to buy online sitting in the comfort of my home,” said Col Yashpal Singh (retd), who is an online shopper for the past six years. “Earlier I used to be a little apprehensive, but by opting for only the branded and genuine sites, I have reduced the risk to nil,” said Col Yashpal. Gone are the days of pushing heavy shopping carts up and down the aisles, loading up with the weekly groceries, dragging tired and reluctant children behind, waiting in line at the check-out, unloading into the trunk of your car, driving home amidst heavy traffic, unloading from the car again. The tiresome shopping chores have been replaced with the more convenient e-shopping. You just need to place an order from the comfort of your home and a local home delivery company will have the goods delivered at your doorstep and collect cash on delivery. This convenience of e-shopping is now limited not only to household goods. It has left an impact on many other sectors. Buyers now prefer to buy almost anything and everything online, be it electronics gadgets such as computers, cameras, mobile phones, apparel and jewellery, home and kitchen appliances, lifestyle accessories like watches, beauty products & perfumes, baby products, books, music and video CDs, flowers and gift items and wine etc. Beware of fraud sites
A buyer should always be careful about fraudulent sites,” said Kiran Khurana, a software engineer. “One should be careful of a secure checkout. Before you purchase an item, look for HTTPS at the beginning of the web address on the transaction page - it indicates a secure connection. Addresses that begin with HTTP, without S aren’t secure and can result in your payment details being stolen and misused.” One should always read the description and the return policy properly before buying any product online,” said Simran Bittu, a student. She also said that instead of paying online through credit or debit card, one should opt for the cash on delivery (COD) option. |
City road safety expert features in Aamir’s ‘Satyamev Jayate’
Jalandhar, October 13 While last week, director of the Youth Football Academy at Rurka Kalan Gurmangal Dass had been invited to the show, running for the third season, it was Dr Soi, a resident of Avtar Nagar here, who featured as the road safety expert meant for highlighting road safety situation in the country and even got the privilege of getting his book launched by the Bollywood star during the show. Dr Soi has been fighting for the cause of road safety for the past 16 years. Calling road accidents murders, Dr Soi first wrote to the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding “murders” happening on roads of Punjab. The March 4, 2013, accident involving a schoolbus, in which 14 children from two Nakodar villages lost their lives, too, was discussed on the show. Aamir talks to Dr Soi about having taken his fight for ensuring the safe transportation of school children by moving court to get justice for them. He says that accident is not an incident and three things are involved – man, machine and medium, that is, driver, bus and road, and all of them fail during an accident. He says, “The school bus was having a lot of problems, tyres had withered down, chassis was bad and it hit a truck head-on which had 5,000 bricks laden in it. Thus, the impact was very big.” He says the bus didn’t have yellow paint, which is otherwise mandatory as per the Supreme Court guidelines. Aamir added that the bus was in a bad condition, the driver was not suitable to drive and the road was dangerous so the accident was bound to happen. Aamir Khan also released the book “Carnage on Indian Roads” on road safety written by Dr Soi. |

jalandhar: traffic woes-iI Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Jalandhar October 13 Jalandhar Tribune spoke to a cross-section of the residents about the traffic issues during the ongoing festive season and to find a solution to the problem. All residents consider the traffic management as a serious issue and seek immediate solution. Deploy additional force in festive season
The city traffic police should deploy additional cops at all strategic points in order to manage the traffic. There are a number of roundabouts in the city, but the deployment of traffic cops is limited. Be it Jyoti Chowk, BSF Chowk, Old Sabzi Mandi Chowk, Milap Chowk, Bhagat Singh Chowk and Doaba Chowk, one has to crawl slowly to cross the said roundabouts. The police should pay more attention to manage the traffic at these points. Make auto-rickshaw drivers aware of traffic rules
The city has over 10,000 auto rickshaws. In the absence of strict checks, the drivers of these auto- rickshaws create traffic chaos at each nook and corner of the city. The traffic police challan auto-rickshaws only when there is any mishap. If the police continue to keep a tab on rash and illegal auto drivers, half of the traffic problems in the city can be solved at one go.
— Ankush Mahajan Rope in more police force to tackle the problem
If the traffic police has less force to manage the traffic mess, it should rope in the policemen deployed at police stations. If possible, the police can also rope in some volunteers, who can be deployed at different intersections of the city. The police should publish advertisements before the festival season to seek such volunteers. There are several NGOs which can be contacted to seek volunteers to manage the traffic chaos. Pay attention to traffic,
not challans
It has been observed that the traffic police pay more attention to issuing the challans rather than managing the traffic. Even in festival season, cops on duty at “nakas” can be seen stopping vehicles and issuing challans. Instead of wasting time on issuing challans, attention should be paid to manage the traffic.
— Vicky Sharma Remove encroachments
Until and unless, encroachments remain in the city markets, traffic scene cannot be improved. Be it Jyoti chowk, Rainak Bazar, Bhagat Singh Chowk, Mai Heeran Gate, Jail Chowk, there are encroachments galore at every nook and corner. Especially during the festival season, vendors often put up makeshift shops on the roads, causing huge traffic jam. The Municipal Corporation should conduct surprise checks to remove such encroachments in order to maintain a smooth flow of traffic during the festive season. Stop entry of illegal
tractor-trailers
It has been observed that illegal tractor-trailers, which are being banned inside the city areas, are still flouting the rules. During the festival season, these loaded tractor trailers cause traffic chaos. Since these tractor trailers are meant for agricultural purposes only, the same are being used for commercial purposes too. The traffic police should set up nakas at all exit points of the city to prevent the entry of these tractor-trailers. Residents themselves cause traffic jams
It is not right to put the onus of managing the traffic rush on the police only. In fact, every resident should understand his duty. It is the residents who resort to haphazard parking of the vehicles in no parking areas, causing traffic jams. The city has various designated parking lots and if every commuter starts utilising the same, the traffic mess can be wiped out. The traffic police should initiate a campaign or hold special camps to make residents aware of traffic rules. Deploy cops in mufti to check rash driving
It has been observed that youngsters, during the festive season, resort to rash driving, causing fatal accidents. Cops should be deployed in mufti at strategic locations to keep a tab on such elements. |

The objective of research is to give an extra advantage to the poor population who cannot afford insulin or other regular anti-hyperglycemic treatment. The Department of Science and Technology (Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India, New Delhi) has sanctioned Rs 25 lakh to the LPU team under the Science and Research Board Fast Track Research Scheme. “I am happy to see the success in the preparation of herbal formula for the treatment of diabetes.
