Municipal Solid Waste Treatment Plant case Gurdeep Singh Mann Tribune News Service
Bathinda, September 29 Residents of Bhai Mati Das Nagar, Harbans Nagar and a lawyer are fighting a case against the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) for shifting the MSW Treatment Plant for more than the last two years. The residents claim that the setting up of the plant would increase pollution in the nearby residential areas and make a water channel. Apart from the orders of the day-to-day hearing, the Tribunal also directed the secretary of the Local Bodies Department, GM Balamurugan, to visit the two probable sites for the project and then report about those sites to the Tribunal in the next hearing. The secretary and complainant in the case, Captain (retd) Mal Singh and advocate Guriqbal Chahal were among the others who were present during today’s hearing at NGT in New Delhi. The Tribunal also directed the MCB to ensure segregation of plastic from the garbage at the plant. The area residents have been raising a hue and cry and apart from the legal fight, they also held massive protests in the past. The other two probable sites for setting up of the plant in Bathinda are situated in Jodhpur and Jiwan Singhwala villages. Though the safai workers collect the garbage from houses and other places, they dump it at secondary points in the city, which pose a serious threat to the slum area residents who live in proximity of the dumping site. Amarjit Singh, a resident of Dhobiana Basti, said garbage was being dumped in the area adjoining the Cantonment in the Dhobiana Basti but it was not picked up from there on a regular basis. Heaps of garbage can be seen piled up near Model Town Phase-1, Dhobiana Basti, Power House Road, Harbans Nagar and Bhai Mati Das Nagar. Corporation Commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh could not be contacted for comments as he was away to Delhi.

Policemen to join MC teams in drive against encroachments
Bathinda, September 29 Though the officials stated that they would make their plan public only after a meeting in this connection with the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP, sources said the officials are planning to start the drive by next week. A section of shopkeepers, who objected to the confiscating of their material in Kikkar Bazaar, are booked under various sections of the IPC on the charges of not allowing a government servant to do his duty and various other sections. While the shopkeepers accuse the employees of the Tehbazari Wing of biased attitude, MC officials said the shopkeepers bullied them. “Shopkeepers have encroached upon the entire footpath by placing goods on it and have also rented out their footpaths to roadside vendors. People, on the other hand, complain against lack of space on the footpaths,” said one of the officials of the Tehbazari Wing. He said from now onwards, they would not spare any shopkeeper or vendor in case of any violation. He said they would carry out their task amidst video recording and in the presence of the senior police functionaries. “As per the norms, .the material confiscated from the violators is not returned but is sold in an open auction,” said another official. MC Commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh was not available for his comments as he has gone to Delhi on an official visit. The lower rung officials admitted contemplation of the re-launching the anti-encroachment drive. The officials stated that in view of the coming festival season, it becomes important to keep the encroachers at bay from the footpaths, which are suppose to be used by the visitors. |

WASPS members have undergone special security training and have been equipped with modern armour and communication gadgets. Residents sensitised about heart diseases
Bathinda, September 29 The doctors also unveiled a booklet that answers all heart-related queries. “Over the past week we organise cardiac camps across different regions of Bathinda and the neighbouring towns. We screened approximately 1,005 persons at the camps within the age group of 28-65. Youngsters were seen at the camp with heart problems being stress, bad eating habits, smoking, as the main resons for the disease.”said Dr Ashok Jayant. Doctors shared that sedentary lifestyle, in addition to stressful working condition and a compromised diet are the leading factors in precipitating the risk of heart disease. As per a recent study conducted in 12 cities across the country, it has been found that over 70 per cent of the urban population is at the risk of being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. Five years ago, cardiologists hardly saw young patients with heart problem. But now, it is fairly common to see youth in the age group of 25 to 35 suffering from heart strokes. The main reasons for this are erroneous lifestyle habits like smoking, alcohol dependence and excessive fast food consumption. The hospital released a booklet called ‘We pledge to take care of your heart, so should you!’. The booklet is a ready reckoner for all heart-related queries of people like myths about heart diseases, what happens during a heart attack, recognising the symptoms of heart attack, tests to determine the condition of the heart and treatment of such ailments. “It has always been the endeavour of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda, to ensure healthy lifestyles and healthy hearts for the city residents. With lifestyle roadblocks like smoking, alcohol intake, erratic schedules increasing annually.90 per cent of heart attacks can be prevented simply by controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes,” said Dr Sharad Gupta. “Immediate care within the first hour of cardiac emergencies is crucial as almost 50 per cent deaths happen during this period, mostly due to unawareness and lack of timely care. Through the booklet we aim to educate the public about the symptoms of various types of cardiac emergencies and risks and quick and effective steps that must be taken as soon as heart attack strikes, even before professional help arrives,” said Dr Sajaad Manzoor. “Risk to your heart begins almost the moment you are born. Underweight newborns (weighing less than 2.5 kg at birth) who gain weight rapidly in early childhood are at the higher risk of developing the metabolic syndrome which causes a cluster of risk factors for heart disease and diabetes like abdominal obesity, hypertension (chronic high blood pressure),” said Dr Parag Kumar. Meanwhile the hospital also organiaed a heart check-up camp on its premises for the Punjab Police Association, Bathinda. The camp extended free consultation to the residents and offered free medical tests such as ECG, blood sugar, BMI and blood pressure. |

The cold blooded murder of two real brothers in Ludhiana district by an Akali leader in connivance with the police is a recent example of total lawlessness in Punjab, they alleged. The memorandum has stated that the police force has become a tool in the hands of the ruling alliance, no FIRs are registered against the accused belonging to the ruling party unless and until there are protests, demonstrations and dharnas against the police. Apart from these incidents, thousands of men have been framed in false narcotics cases, whereas the kingpins in drugs trade are roaming free, they said. The memorandum to the President of India has been signed by Ved Parkash Gupta, general secretary, Punjab Human Rights Committee and Karnail Singh Sidhu, convener, Punjab Bachao Morcha.
