As per the complaint filed by Dr Renuka Goel with the cantonment police station, on Friday night, she was going from Bathinda to Rampura Civil Hospital to attend an emergency case and her driver Vinod Kumar was at the wheels. When their car crossed the Chetak Park and reached the barricades, her driver stopped the car to let the traffic coming from the opposite side pass.

In the meantime, a car hit them from the rear and when they came out of the vehicle, they found out that the former chairman of zila parishad Bikramjit Singh was driving that car. One person came out of that car and started beating up her driver. Three persons were travelling in the car of Bikramjit Singh. After that, one more car also came along in which five persons were travelling. One person got out of the car and started beating up their driver badly.

While the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge MPS Pahwa granted anticipatory bail to one of the accused, the court of CJM Raman Kumar granted bail to the eight accused.

Twelve persons, including the company head of e-Biz.Com Private Limited, were booked by the police on the complaint of a woman, Harvinder Kaur. "A team will be dispatched in a day or two to arrest the company head Dr Pawan Malhan from Noida in Uttar Pradesh and another company member Preeti, a resident of Bathinda,” the police said.

Thermal ash to blame for uranium problem

According to the findings of an expert committee, the contribution of uranium to groundwater due to the deposition of fly ash in the dyke area through the ground route of GNDTP was highly insignificant over 35 years, i.e., only about 0.04 per cent. Similarly, through the thrust arid route, meaning the contribution of uranium to the groundwater due to deposition of fly ash in the soil is only about .5 per cent over 35 years.

A high-power committee conducted studies which established that the coal ash generated from the thermal power stations in the vicinity of Bathinda area is not in any case the immediate cause for the presence of uranium in groundwater.

The presence of uranium in the water is rather “geogenic” in nature. It may be stated that the test carried out by the expert committee has indicated that in Bathinda, the natural form of uranium present in the soil is 2 ppm. The fly ash and bottom ash obtained at Bathinda thermal plants is as high as 3.5 to 5 ppm.

In the “geogenic process”, the uranium obtained is as high as 7 ppm of which the uranium naturally available is 2 ppm (28 per cent). So going by the findings of the expert committee, both the natural soil of the area plus the thermal plant ash are “guilty” of contaminating the groundwater with uranium in the area. But the contribution of thermal ash is nearly three times more.

Awareness camps may help reduce road mishaps

Shockingly enough, 511 persons lost their lives while 419 were seriously injured in road accidents in Bathinda in the last three years.

In the last three months, more than 150 persons fell prey to accidents. The main reason behind the rise in the number of mishaps is blatant violation of traffic rules, drunken driving, over speeding and using mobile phone while driving.

Jumping red light has become a fashion among the youngsters. Challans and penalty imposed upon violators hardly matters to them. If caught, they bring about political and administrative pressure upon the cops which emboldens them further.

It may be worth trying to organize traffic awareness camps in educational institutions and truck unions to make them realise the consequences of accidents. The district administration, police, parents and teachers should unitedly strive to make traffic awareness a mass movement. The emphasis of this movement should be on making the drivers of all vehicles realize the importance and necessity of observing traffic rules in letter and spirit to save precious lives.
