City roads have become unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists. Out of the total 844 road accident deaths reported in the last six-years, 278 were pedestrians while 192 were cyclists.

Red-corner notice against ‘missing’ P’kula financier
Chandigarh, September 27
The Chandigarh Police have issued a red-corner notice against a Panchkula resident, Vikram Singh, a financier, after duping a Chandigarh resident worth crores. The realtor was in the news last year after he moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court accusing a UT police official and his wife of making threat calls to him and of running a money-lending racket. Whereas, the police official had denied all allegations.

Cleanliness drive at Estate Office

As part of the Swachh Bharat campaign, employees of the UT Estate Office carried out a special drive to remove waste paper, files and dumped material from the three-storey building on Saturday.

PGI staff pick up broom

A month long “Swachh Bharat Mission” campaign began today in the PGI with Professor YK Chawla, Director, PGI, picking up the first broom and cleaning the lawns of the Kairon Block, PGI, along with others including heads of departments, Deputy Director, Medical Superintendent, Superintending Hospital Engineer and scores of senior staff members.

Six candidates filed their papers for the Panchkula Assembly seat on the last day of filing of nomination papers here today. Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) candidate Ravinder Rawal and Vinod Bagai, who is contesting as an Independent after being denied the Congress ticket, were among those who filed their nominations today.

Protest for regularisation of services
700 teachers detained
Mohali, September 27
The Mohali police today rounded up around 700 computer teachers from Phase VIII. They were holding a protest in front of Director General School Education’s office here. Apart from pressing their main demand of regularisation of their services, the protesters were demanding release of their 38 colleagues, detained yesterday as a preventive measure and sent to the Nabha jail.

Co-accused creates ruckus at police station
Panchkula, September 27
A high drama was witnessed when an accused in the Panchkula murder case on Friday night alleged that cops mixed poison in the food offered to him. Om Pal Thakur, a co-accused in the Harikesh Singh murder case, started shouting in the police station that he is about to die. ‘Nervous’ cops rushed Thakur to the General Hospital. The drama ended when doctors declared that he was perfectly fine.

Education Dept gets lukewarm response

The UT Education Department witnessed a lukewarm response from the suppliers who were invited to submit bids for providing school winter uniform to 95 government schools. Sources said only a few suppliers turned up at the venue - Girls Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, here - on the last date to submit the bids.

On the last day of filing of nomination papers, 11 candidates, including those contesting as Independent, filed their candidature for the Kalka Assembly seat here today. With 11 more nominations, the number of candidates for the seat has risen to 17, including six women.

Three more snatchings in city
Chandigarh, September 27
Snatching incidents continue to rise in Chandigarh as three more women fell prey to snatchers here on Friday. A total of 15 snatching incidents have been reported in the city since September 15. Kalawati, resident of Sector 37, reported that two unidentified motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched her purse containing a cheque of Rs 4,167, passbook etc from Sector 37.

Woman tries to commit suicide, booked
Chandigarh, September 27
A 60-year-old woman tried to commit suicide by jumping off the fourth floor of a building at the PGIMER on Saturday morning. The police said the woman has been identified as Paramjit Kaur, resident of Sector 20. She was rushed to the Trauma Centre after the incident. Her condition is said to be stable.

Man booked for raping niece
Chandigarh, September 27
A 40 year-old-man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 15 year-old-niece for more than three years. Police sources said the victim, who was residing in Snehalaya since the past few months, narrated the incident to the Snehalaya employees who approached the police and lodged a complaint against her uncle, identified as Heera Lal.

His hard work paid off, says squash gold medallist’s father
Mohali, September 27
When the Indian squash team keep the Indian flag high in the Asian Games being held at Incheon (South Korea), Mohali has it’s say in the proudest moment. Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu (25), who laid the foundation of India’s historic gold medal finish, has a Mohali connection. Harinder Pal, son of a senior official of the Mohali Police, has spent his childhood days here before shifting his base to Chennai.

Punjab enter cricket final
Chandigarh, September 27
Punjab (U-19) team knocked out Mumbai to enter the final of the JY Lele Memorial Cricket Tournament being played at Reliance Cricket Ground, Vadodara. After electing to bowl first, Punjab bowlers restricted the rivals on a mere total of 178 runs.
