Modi pays homage to 9/11 victims at Ground Zero
New York, September 27 Modi started the second day of his five-day visit to the US by paying tributes at the memorial, also known as Ground Zero, where the twin towers of the iconic World Trade Centre (WTC) were destroyed in the unprecedented terror attack on September 11, 2001. Dressed in a white kurta and churidars and a grey shawl thrown on his left shoulder, a sombre looking Modi gently placed rose buds one by one — five in all — on the grey granite memorial slabs where the names of the victims were etched, stood for a while and folded his hands. Modi, who was in a reflective mood, also visited the 9/11 museum that displays artefacts associated with the terror attack while presenting stories of loss and recovery. Modi was accompanied by India’s Ambassador to the US S Jaishankar and other officials. Modi’s visit to the memorial of the terror attack, in which the dreaded Al-Qaida crashed two hijacked passenger jets into the twin towers, is seen as a significant gesture of support by India to the war on terror. Terror is expected to be high on the agenda of Modi’s talks with President Barack Obama on September 29 and 30. The 9/11 memorial was inaugurated by Obama in May this year. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum commemorates the terror attacks which killed 2,977 people, including 40 Indians, and the World Trade Centre bombing of 1993, which killed six. Names of nine Indian victims are inscribed on the granite panels of the 9/11 memorial — Ganesh K Ladkat, Anil Shivhari Umarkar, Sushil S Solanki, Alok Kumar Mehta, Shekhar Kumar, Alok Agarwal, Jayesh Shantilal Shah, Yudhvir S Jain and Hashmukh C Parmar. The memorial is located at the World Trade Centre site, on the former location of the Twin Towers, which were destroyed during the attacks. The World Trade Centre Memorial Foundation was renamed the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Centre in 2007. The National September 11 Memorial Museum opened in May for the 9/11 community — survivors, families, rescuers.— PTI

India rejects Pak’s ‘untenable comments’ on Kashmir
United Nations, September 27 Exercising its right of reply on the floor of the UNGA to the comments made by Sharif, India said the Pakistan PM made “unwarranted references” in his address to the UN session yesterday. “I would like to bring to the notice of this august House that the people of J&K have peacefully chosen their destiny in accordance with the universally accepted democratic principles and practices and they continue to do so. We, therefore, reject in their entirety the untenable comments of the distinguished delegate of Pakistan,” Abhishek Singh, First Secretary in the Indian mission to the UN said in the General Assembly. Again raising the issue of J&K in the UN, Sharif had said that a “veil” cannot be drawn on the Kashmir issue. Blaming India for the cancellation of the Foreign Secretary-level talks between the two countries in August, Sharif had said it was “another missed opportunity” to settle disputes and build economic and trade relations. — PTI

Chennai, September 27 It all began with burning of effigies of senior DMK leaders, including party chief M Karunanidhi and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, when the conviction was announced and violence rocked the state after the court sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years in jail and slapped a fine of Rs 100 crore. BJP, TN parties welcome verdict against Jaya
New Delhi, September 27 BJP leader Subramanian Swamy termed the sentence the vindication of the stand he had taken in 1996. “I feel vindicated. She cannot recover from this loss of credibility,” he said. He also tweeted “When I won the 2G case, JJ claimed credit. Why not now for the DA case she claims credit?” Then a leader of the Janata Party, Swamy had filed the case against Jayalalithaa alleging that during her tenure as the Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996 she amassed properties worth Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate to her known sources of income. The conviction means that Jayalalithaa will be disqualified from holding any elected office for a long period. The saffron party is seeing this as an opportunity to make inroads into the state where the BJP and its ally PMK managed to win one seat each in the General Election. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Congress committee president BS Gnanadesikan appealed that violence should be eschewed and urged the police to uphold law and order. “The police have a duty to protect the law and order and I believe that they will do their duty,” he said. PMK founder leader Dr S Ramadoss said justice had prevailed and the police should take steps to ensure that the law and order is protected. MDMK leader Vaiko said the judgment has reaffirmed the supremacy of judiciary. (With PTI inputs)

Cong bends ‘one family, one ticket’ rule in Maharashtra
New Delhi, September 27 With Narayanrao’s son Nitesh nominated by the Congress central election committee as a candidate from Kankavli segment in Maharashtra, the Rane family has become the sole political family in poll-bound Maharashtra and Haryana to share two tickets between them. Narayan Rane, Industry Minister in the minority government led by Congress’ Prithviraj Chavan (who resigned as CM yesterday), is himself contesting to defend the Kudal seat from where he has been winning since 1990. His son Nitesh will contest from Kankavali, currently held by the BJP. The ticket was declared in the last list of 30 candidates announced by Congress this afternoon, hours before the deadline for filing nominations for the Maharashtra polls was to end. Rane had recently managed for himself the coveted post of Maharashtra Congress campaign committee chief after resigning from the Chavan Cabinet over differences with him. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had then placated him with a crucial responsibility ahead of polls. Today, the party budged to his pressures by bending the one family, one ticket rule. The nomination of Rane’s son comes two days after Congress general secretary in charge of the CEC Madhusudan Mistry said the party would not name two candidates from one family. In Haryana, chairman of the Congress campaign committee Capt Ajay Yadav failed to get a ticket for his son Chiranjeevi on this very count. Also, Kiran Choudhary’s daughter Shruti was not fielded despite being considered initially.
