Outer Ring Road corridor hits religious hurdle
New Delhi, September 22 The Public Works Department (PWD) has not been able to carry the work for the last one year after talks with the caretakers of these buildings failed. "The matter has now been sent to the religious committee which may decide something," said a top PWD official. The project was targeted to be completed by the end of 2015. However, according to sources in PWD, the matter is too sensitive for the political brass to handle in the prevailing scenario of the city. "Delhi has seen two major elections in the past one year. Hence, the political leaders are too scared to intervene in the issue which might hit their vote banks. Now again, elections are awaited in Delhi, which means that the matter is going to be stuck for an indefinite time," said a source in PWD. The re-engineering of the nearly 20-km stretch will help commuters avoid traffic jams from Vikaspuri through Janakpuri, Paschim Vihar, Pitampura and Rohini to Wazirabad. The project has been divided into three parts which includes construction of road from Vikaspuri to Meerabagh, Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk, Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk. The road will be a six-lane corridor lifted on a single pier. This technology is being used in Delhi for the first time. The elevated structure will occupy only three metres on the ground and 24 metres in the air. The road is expected to help decongest traffic on the route saving fuel and travelling time. According to an impact study carried out by PWD, the new corridor between two points will help save Rs 430 crore per annum, including Rs 130 crore per annum on fuel. About Rs 75-80 lakh would be saved every day. The study has shown that 58,000-litre fuel will be saved daily implying that Rs 130 crore per annum will be saved. The cost of the project which is Rs 2,400 crore, may be recovered in four years. Corridor of contention

Woman set on fire for dowry, succumbs
New Delhi, September 22 The victim, Usha Singh, was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital in south Delhi with 65 per cent burns on Thursday. She had told a sub-divisional magistrate in her statement that her husband Nitin and father-in-law Gyan had set her on fire for refusing to meet their dowry demands. She had also alleged that Gyan had first slit her wrist with a blade before pouring kerosene over her. Usha's brother Subhash claimed that Gyan had intended to give a "slow and painful death" to her for which he first slit her wrist with a blade. "But she resisted and screamed for help. They then set her ablaze," Subhash alleged. Usha's family also wants her mother-in-law and sister-in-law arrested, alleging that they also harassed her for dowry. "They first wanted a car. Then they began demanding Rs 5 lakh. When we said we were incapable of giving so much money, they beat her. When we would threaten to report their behaviour to the police, Usha's father-in-law would mock us saying that it was impossible for us to report about a Tihar Jail official," alleged Usha's another brother Rajender. "He would say he knows policemen and would land us in Tihar and then harass us there," he added. The family said they would fight for justice until all the people involved in harassing Usha were punished. |
Bangla Sahib parking land belongs to NDMC: Sarna
New Delhi, September 22 He said when Prahlad Singh Chandhoc was president of the DSGMC, an agreement between the NDMC and the gurdwara committee was signed for construction of the parking. "When I was president of the DSGMC, I never signed any agreement. It was signed by DSGMC officials." When the agreement was signed by the general manager, secretary and general secretary of the DSGMC, Manjit Singh (GK) of SAD (Badal), who is heading the gurdwara committee now, was executive member of the DSGMC. But, he never raised his voice against the agreement. A spokesperson for the DSGMC, Parminder Singh, said when Sarna was president in 2005, an agreement was signed between the DSGMC and the NDMC that the parking would be transferred to the NDMC after 30 years. He said the agreement was not justifiable as parking was constructed with the permission of the NDMC. About Rs 100 crore was spent on its construction. Returning it to the NDMC is injustice. Chandhoc said, "I had signed the agreement, but when Sarna was president, another agreement was signed between the then gurdwara committee and the government. What was in the agreement, I do not know." |
