Pune techie's murder: 4 more arrested Pune/New Delhi, June 5 Mohasin Shaikh, 28, a resident of Bankar Colony in Hadapsar, was bludgeoned to death with hockey sticks allegedly by a group of men with links to the Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) during protests after an objectionable post was uploaded on Facebook by unknown people which denigrated warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji and Shiv Sena chief late Bal Thackeray. Meanwhile, four more activists of a rightist group were arrested by the police in the brutal murder case, taking the total arrests in the case to 17 even as authorities mulled invoking a law that would make it difficult to get bail. Pune Police Commissioner Satish Mathur today said that authorities were mulling invoking the stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDAA), making it difficult for them to secure bail. The move by authorities came even as the newly elected Pune MP Anil Shirole (BJP) made a controversial statement that though the incident (murder) was “unfortunate”, the repercussions of the derogatory post were “natural”. “What happened is unfortunate, but after the Facebook post some repercussion was natural," he said, but hastened to add "we are making all efforts for restoring peace in Pune, people there want peace.” Some media reports said the posts might have originated from Internet Protocol (IP) addresses in a foreign country, but there was no official word on it. Those arrested have been booked under various sections of the IPC, including murder. In addition, 180 persons have been arrested in connection with cases related to the rioting and damaging of city buses in the area in the incidents on Sunday and Monday during the bandh called to protest the Facebook post. — PTI |

Panaji, June 5 “The rise in sea level was 1.8 millimetre three decades ago, but it has now increased to three millimetre per year, due to various factors,” He said studies were still on to ascertain the reason behind the rise in sea level, whether it was natural variability or it was a result of global warming. “In the 1970s, thermal expansion and glacier melting accounted for 75 per cent of ocean rise,” he said, adding that other factors contributed to the remaining 25 per cent. Unnikrishnan said since 1992, satellite altimeters had been used to measure changes in sea level. “Since the last couple of years, Indo-French satellite SARAL-Altika has been measuring changes in glaciers which contributes to rise in sea level,” the researcher, who is part of a team monitoring shore water rise, said. Unnikrishnan said rising sea level would continue, but people should not fear catastrophes. — PTI |

Bar rejects CJI plan to keep courts open for 365 days
New Delhi, June 5 The BCI held a day-long meeting with the office-bearers of State Bar Councils and High Court Bar Associations here yesterday to discuss the proposal and other issues. “Members present at the meeting did not agree with the CJI’s suggestion in the absence of modalities to implement it,” BCI Chairman Biri Singh Sinsinwar told reporters today. “It is not possible for advocates to attend the court for all 365 days,” he said. The meeting, however, acknowledged the need for reducing the number of pending cases in courts, which, at present, stood at over 30 million, including 60,000 in the Supreme Court and 42 lakh in High Courts. The participants authorised Sinsinwar to constitute a committee for going into the issue further and holding meetings with the CJI and the Union Law Ministry to work out modalities for expediting disposal of cases. “The working days and working hours of courts can be extended,” it was felt. The meeting decided to approach the Centre and state governments for setting up an Advocates’ Academy in each state on the lines of the Judicial Academy in order to provide continuing legal education to advocates.

AAP to discuss Punjab at its Delhi meet today
Chandigarh, June 5 All is not well within the party. Questions have been raised by leaders, who quit the party in the recent past, about its functioning, especially the alleged absence of a democratic set-up within the organisation, They had alleged that there was too much centralisation of power in the decision making.
A senior leader said the party blundered at various levels and was in a tearing hurry to be on the centre stage of politics. However, non-inclusion of Yadav in the committee named by the AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal to establish party structure in Punjab is most surprising. Yadav had played a key role in constituting the screening committee to select candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. |

loan waiver scheme for farmers All set to waive Rs 54,000 cr obtained as loans by farmers and SHGs Suresh Dharur Tribune News Service
Hyderabad, June 5 For a state that is set to begin its journey with a revenue deficit of Rs 10,000 crore and uncertainty over the location of the new capital city, the loan waiver will add to the burden. However, Naidu, who steered his TDP to power after a gap of 10 years, had promised that the first file he would sign after taking over as Chief Minister would be on waiving farm loans. Though there is still confusion about the exact monetary commitment, official sources said Rs 54,000 crore, obtained as loans by farmers and SHG members from various banks, would be waived off. The loan accounts up to a limit of Rs 1 lakh would be covered under the populist scheme. Naidu, who will take over the reins of the new state on June 8, held consultations with the representatives of the bankers and also financial experts regarding implementation of the key poll promise. The TDP government is likely to issue security bonds to the banks against debt waiver. While TDP leaders are confident of implementing the loan waiver scheme despite the financial burden, experts are skeptical about its feasibility and desirability. “This kind of irresponsible populism will prove disastrous for the economy and disrupt the banking system. Who has given them the right to squander away money collected from tax payers?” wondered civil servant-turned politician and founder president of Lok Satta party Dr N Jayaprakash Narayan. Despite the Central government waiving loans worth ~65,000 crore five years ago, the agriculture sector continues to be in crisis, he pointed out. “Farmers can be helped by ensuring remunerative prices for their produce and facilities like warehouses and cold storages and allowing exports,” said Dr Narayan. Will take oath as CM on June 8 * Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, who steered his party to victory after 10 years, is set to take oath as the CM of residuary Andhra Pradesh on June 8 * Massive arrangements are being made for the ceremony to be held at Mangalgiri on the Vijayawada-Guntur road in coastal Andhra * The Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Goa, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Nagaland have been invited for the ceremony |

But, Telangana adds riders
Hyderabad, June 5 Three days after forming the first government in the newly-carved state, the TRS said that the crop loans up to Rs 1 lakh obtained by farmers after June 1 last year would be waived off. By restricting the loan waiver facility to a single financial year, the state government hopes to drastically reduce the financial burden from Rs 25,000 crore estimated earlier to Rs 10,000 crore. Moreover, the waiver would be applicable only to the agricultural loans. The loans availed by famers by pledging gold or land documents would not be covered under the scheme, Finance Minister E Rajender said. Loan waiver for farmers was one of the key poll promises of TRS which earned a decisive mandate in the recent elections, bagging 63 seats in the 119-member Assembly. However, the huge financial implications of the scheme appear to have forced the new government to impose a set of conditions and restrict its application to the loans, up to a maximum of Rs 1 lakh, obtained during June 2013 and June 2014. The decision to add riders to the scheme was taken at a meeting CM K Chandrasekhar Rao had with the representatives of the State-Level Bankers’ Committee. However, a formal announcement regarding the loan waiver conditions would be announced on June 9, TRS sources said. The loan waiver would not be applicable to the allied activities, including poultry and livestock. The farmers in Telangana owe Rs 40, 994 crore to the banks. Of this, the crop loans up to Rs 1 lakh amount to Rs 19, 600 crore.
