Another fraud case slapped on industrialist
Ludhiana, June 5
Jagjit Singh The police have registered yet another fraud case against industrialist Jagjit Singh, who was recently arrested for committing a fraud of Rs 47 crore by mortgaging a plot measuring 17,000 sq yd in Jugiana village to a bank on the basis of forged documents.

A history-sheeter
Jagjit Singh was booked in 1998 for running a fake currency racket and served a three-year jail term. In 2005, he was booked for opening fire.

Civil Hospital in ‘troubled waters’
Ludhiana, June 5
Taps at the Civil Hospital have gone dry, courtesy a faulty tubewell. Left with no other option, patients are buying packaged drinking water. Sunita Rani, a patient’s attendant, said she had bought 20 bottles of water since yesterday. “With the taps running dry, the patients and their attendants are facing a tough time,” she said. Sources said doctors were getting water from home.

5 booked for attempting to kidnap 20-yr-old girl
Ludhiana, June 5
The police have booked five unidentified persons for attempting to kidnap a 20-year-old girl from the Kot Mangal Singh area yesterday. The case has been registered on the complaint of girl’s father Sanjiv Kumar, a resident of the Kot Mengal Singh Main Market area.

Labourer falls off staircase, dies
Ludhiana, June 5
Police officials inspect the spot where the labourer died at the Taj Gunj area on Thursday. A mason died after falling off staircase of a house in Taj Gunj Mohalla near Division No. 3 today. The house, where the incident took place, is being renovated. The deceased was identified as Anil Kumar (30). He was going towards the rooftop along with another labourer to inspect the work. It was learnt that Anil was feeling giddy and fell from the staircase.

Dismissal of Inspectors
Strike enters fourth day
Ludhiana, June 5
Union members protest outside the DFSC office in Ludhiana on Thursday. The protest against the dismissal of two Inspectors of the Food and Civil Supplies Department entered fourth day today. Members of the Inspector 2010 Batch Union, Punjab (Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs), sat on a dharna in front of the office of the District Food and Civil Supply Controller, Ludhiana, while the routine work remained suspended.

Shiv Sena workers raise slogans near Gunda Nullah in Ludhiana on Thursday. In the absence of a proper formulation of the Punjab Outdoor Advertising Policy 2013, the advertisement row in the city refuses to settle down. The Shiv Sena unit today organised a dharna near Gunda Nullah demanding “punishment” for those involved in the advertising scam.

A chemist shop remains closed in Ludhiana on Thursday afternoon. City chemists shut shops
Ludhiana, June 5
Local chemists today shut their shops for four hours from 1 pm onwards. They were protesting against the rise in the number of raids at their shops as part of the ongoing drive against drugs. The Retail Chemist Association of Ludhiana president, Aman, said: “The police have been harassing us unnecessarily. We already have officials from a number of other departments who keep conducting raids at our shops.

Brick kiln owners to cease operations

Brick kilns in Ludhiana have decided to shut operations for an indefinite period from June 20. The move is in protest of the mandatory environment clearance.

SSA teachers stage protest
Ludhiana, June 5
SSA teachers stage a protest at Chhatar Singh Park in Ludhiana. The teachers working under Sarav Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) staged a protest against the state government for not renewing their contract after March 2014. Irked teachers burnt the effigy of state government near Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). As many as 1,273 B.Ed qualified teachers were recruited on contract in March 2013.

It was a dismal day for hosts Ludhiana as Amritsar capitalised on fielding lapses and went on pile up a huge score of 447 for 8 on the opening day of the four-day match in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Championship (U-19) for the Dhruv Pandove Trophy being played at Punjab Agricultural University ground here today.
